A Marine in New York for Fleet Week was struck by a car and killed early Thursday as he tried to return to his ship docked at a Hudson River pier just 200 yards away.

The 22-year-old corporal was hit about 1 a.m. after a taxi dropped him and several other Marines near their ship, the USS Iwo Jima, berthed on Pier 88.

His name was withheld pending notification of his family by the Marines.

Earlier in the day, the "Parade of Ships" traveled grandly up the Hudson River to inaugurate the city's 24th annual Fleet Week, which draws more than 3,000 Marines, sailors and Coast Guard members.

Crossing the West Side Highway is a little tricky. It is like an interstate with traffic lights. You have to wait for the WALK light, and you have to make sure that the cars have actually stopped at the red light.

Prayers for the family. All I could think is they thought he would be safe being home. I guess you never know for sure.
