A Marine is facing disciplinary action after smuggling a woman into the home of Britain's Trident submarine fleet in the boot of his car. It is understood that he was caught with the woman as he escorted her out of the high-security base at Faslane. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said the Marine had been interviewed following "a potential breach of security" at HM Naval Base Clyde on 12 March. A spokesman said the matter was now subject to an internal investigation. "We can confirm a member of the naval service was interviewed by MoD police following a report of...

A specially upgraded Russian Akula class submarine has been caught trying to record the acoustic signature made by the Vanguard submarines that carry Trident nuclear missiles, according to senior Navy officers. British submariners have also reported that they are experiencing the highest number of "contacts" with Russian submarines since 1987. If the Russians are able to obtain a recording of the unique noise of the boat's propellers it would have serious implications for Britain's nuclear deterrent. Using its sophisticated sonar, the Akula would be able to track Vanguards and potentially sink them before they could launch their Trident D4 missiles....

Pentagon deploys USS Wyoming amid tensions with Moscow nuclear-armed U.S. ballistic missile submarine arrived in Scotland this week amid growing tensions with Moscow over Ukraine and Russia’s strategic arms buildup. The submarine, the USS Wyoming, arrived at the British naval base at Faslane, Scotland, Wednesday morning for what the U.S. Strategic Command said is a routine visit. However, ballistic missile submarine movements and port visits normally are not announced by the Navy or the Strategic Command, an indication the Wyoming’s port call is intended as strategic messaging to Moscow. The submarine visit “demonstrates the closeness of the U.S./U.K. defense relationship...

For more than three decades, it has been a ramshackle yet passionate presence in the shadow of Britain’s strategic nuclear deterrent, acting as a focal point for peace campaigners throughout the world. But now, having fought off repeated threats of eviction, the constant vigil maintained by demonstrators at the Faslane Peace Camp in Argyll is to end in June. With only four residents left, the small population of the camp on the shores of Gare Loch say they will be forced to take the “regrettable” action unless they are joined by a fresh influx of recruits in the next three...
