Lewiston, ME: Every year since 1818, the Farmers’ Almanac provides an extended weather forecast that helps people plan ahead. This year, with the extreme summer weather conditions broiling the country, and the growing concern over the rising costs of heating oil, Farmers’ Almanac is releasing its winter weather forecast earlier than ever. The 2023 Farmers’ Almanac, which hits the store shelves on August 15, is warning readers that this winter will be filled plenty of shaking, shivering, and shoveling. How Cold? Shivery temperatures are predicted to rattle warm weather seekers in the Southeast and South Central states, but the real...

Northeasterners, keep your mittens, boots and show shovel handy. The Farmer’s Almanac that goes on sale this week predicts a snowy winter from Maryland to Maine with five coastal storms to bring winter misery to the region. The publication, now in its 200th year, isn’t afraid to go out on a limb with long-term weather forecasts that rely on a formula founder David Young first used in 1818 that utilizes sunspots, tidal action and other factors shunned by modern scientists. Editors are looking to redeem themselves after missing the mark when heavy snow failed to materialize in the Midwest and...

Using their “almost 200 century-old formula,” the editors of the “time-tested and generation-approved” Farmers’ Almanac are predicting a frost-bound, Siberian winter for two-thirds of the United States “Return of the Ice Cold Winter” is how the 2017 edition of the famed annual publication characterizes the impending chill, according to a press release. “Winter is coming!” the Farmers’ Almanac editors announce, as they advise that this year might be a good time to “splurge on a snow blower.” (RELATED: US College Professor Demands Imprisonment For Climate-Change Deniers) The “amazingly accurate” long-range forecast — starting on page 65 — covers September 2016...

We know, we know. It's August and it's hot and humid and it seems like it will never be cold again. But:~SNIP~And you better start preparing because according to the Long Range Weather Forecast released by The Old Farmer's Almanac, this one is going to be a real doozy. Every region of the U.S. will be hit with a different type of terrible. The Northeast and Midwest can expect "colder than normal" temperatures and precipitation is supposed to be "above normal." If you're in the Pacific Northwest, you can expect a lot of rain and chilly weather. And in the...

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) -- Just when you thought you had gotten over last winter, be warned: The Old Farmer's Almanac predicts it will be super cold with a slew of snow for much of the country, even in places that don't usually see too much of it, like the Pacific Northwest. If you don't want to read about those four-letter words, there's plenty more to peruse in the folksy, annual book of household tips, trends, recipes and articles, such as animal jealousy, the history of shoes and anticipation for the biggest Supermoon in decades in November 2016.
  • Report: Farmers’ Almanac more accurate than government climate scientists

This exceptionally cold and snowy winter has shown that government climate scientists were dead wrong when it came to predicting just how cold this winter would be, while the 197-year old Farmers’ Almanac predicted this winter would be “bitterly cold”. Bloomberg Businessweek reports that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center (CPC) predicted temperatures would be “above normal from November through January across much of the lower 48 states.” This, however, was dead wrong. As Bloomberg notes, the CPC underestimated the “mammoth December cold wave, which brought snow to Dallas and chilled partiers in Times Square on New...

Nobody in Washington even saw it coming! Winter, I mean. “Surprised by how tough this winter has been? You’re in good company: Last fall the Climate Prediction Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted that temperatures would be above normal from November through January across much of the Lower 48 states.” If I’d known it was going to be so cold, I might have signed up for Obamacare, or at least bought some gloves. In fact, your Government completely mis-predicted this winter’s weather. The center grades itself on what it calls the Heidke skill score, which ranges from...

LEWISTON, Maine — Geiger Brothers, the producer of the Farmers’ Almanac as well as pocket diaries and calendars, is divesting itself of its printing and manufacturing business after 135 years. The company’s decision, one influenced by changes in peoples’ behavior wrought by technology, will lead to 75 people losing their jobs, Peter Geiger, the company’s executive vice president and editor of the Farmers’ Almanac, told the Bangor Daily News on Tuesday evening. Geiger said the company, which was founded in 1878 and moved to Lewiston in 1955, told its employees of the decision on Tuesday. The company, which is also...

The '2010 Old Farmer's Almanac,' which is now on store shelves, says it's going to be colder in the coming months, with more moisture for the spring. "We're looking for colder-than-normal temperatures through most of the winter," Janice Stillman, editor of this year's edition, said. "But, indeed as the days lengthen, the cold will strengthen, and we're looking for more wet than white before Christmas, and after that, come January - a snowstorm; February - a snowstorm; well-below normal temps, and snow right up through April, which I know will make a lot of folks happy that go skiing," she...

LEWISTON, Maine -- Tune up the snowblower and get out the long johns. The newest edition of the Farmers' Almanac predicts a cold winter with plenty of snow. Beginning in February, the almanac says, storms will target much of the eastern half of the country, with no letup until early spring, and parts of New England will get snow into late April. The West also faces a cold, snowy winter, according to the almanac. Bucking the trend is the Southeast, where mild weather is predicted. The almanac, which hits the newsstands Tuesday, provides little solace for snow-weary New Englanders still...
