Frost wipes out wine on the vine

From May 16 through May 26, temperatures in the Lake Erie Region dropped to between 25 degrees F and 29 degrees F, affecting vineyards ranging from Erie County, Pennsylvania all the way to Niagara County, New York. Estimated crop loss to grape growers in Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties ranged from 25 to 35%.

>I thought this was an El nino year

-------------------------------------------
This winter, the 200-page publication says it'll be cool and snowy in the Northeast, bitterly cold and dry in the Great Lakes states, and cold and snowy across the North Central states.

It says the Northwest will be cool with average precipitation, the Southwest will be mild and dry, the South Central states will be cold and wet, and the Southeast will be mild and dry.

The almanac's forecast, however, is at odds with the National Weather Service, which is calling for warmer-than-normal temperatures across much of the country because of an El Nino system in the tropical Pacific Ocean, said Mike Halpert, deputy director of the NOAA Climate Prediction Center in Camp Springs, Md.

"The stronger El Nino becomes, the more confident and the more likely it will be the northern part of the country will have a milder-than-average winter," Halpert said.

Interior northern Wisconsin, the Iron range of Minnesota and parts of the Michigan UP were already forecast to have had frost this morning. The last day of August found the high temperature in Atlanta at 77 degrees, almost unheard of. In July in Atlanta, there were several mornings of temps in the low 60s, also almost unheard of. This has been one of the coolest summers I can remember in Georgia, and now it is gone and fall approaches. Global warming might be welcomed by the end of this winter.

I’m in the Phoenix, AZ area. It was just recently that we lost a lot of native plants due to a cold snap.

"It was pretty cold this summer....."

That's accurate. Here we are on Sept. 1, and I haven't turned my A/C on year - not even once. It's supposed to be 44 tonight. My neighbors - who are in their 70's - tell me they don't remember a summer that was this cold, ever.
