  • Rice University installs powerful electron microscope with sub-nanoscale resolution

Rice University has installed the Titan Themis scanning/transmission electron microscope, which will enable scientists from Rice as well as academic and industrial partners to view and analyze materials at angstrom-scale (one-tenth of a nanometer) resolution, about the size of a single hydrogen atom. Images will be captured with a variety of detectors, including X-ray, optical and multiple electron detectors and a 4K-resolution camera (will create 4K ultra HD images). The microscope gives researchers the ability to create three-dimensional structural reconstructions and carry out electric field mapping of subnanoscale materials. Electron microscopes use beams of electrons rather than light to illuminate...

Most will recognize this hideous, flesh-eating creature as a member of congress. Upon closer examination it becomes clear how fanged bulbous worm-like maggots that thrive in decaying filth are often mistaken for governors. This member of congress maggot was captured by an SEM (Scanning Electron Micrograph), confirming Stephen Hawking's brain misfired before he claimed God had nothing to do with the creation of the universe. Yea Steve, these little miracles just happen... More creatures at: http://sadhillnews.com/2010/09/07/creepy-closeups-electron-microscope-scans-unseen-world

IBM exposes sub atomic transistors Microscope delivers future vision By INQUIRER staff: Thursday 08 August 2002, 13:51 IN ITS ENDEAVOURS to create ever smaller chips IBM, together with advanced electron optics Nion, has developed what it says is the world's highest-resolution electron microscope. The microscope allows observers to see individual atoms, measuring four-billionths of an inch wide. It was developed to check on the tiddly transistors used in advanced semiconductors. The science journal Nature, says today, "The ability to use electron microscopy to identify and locate individual atoms will have a wide impact on materials, physics and biological sciences". IBM...
