THE O'CONNOR VACANCY SHORT LIST See here : http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/20/politics/politicsspecial1/20confirm.html?pagewanted=print The New York Times reports that, "The White House is reshuffling its short list of potential Supreme Court nominees with a new emphasis on finding someone who will hold up under the pressure of what is expected to be fierce confirmation battle..." This revised criteria allegedly weakens the chances for Judge Janice Rogers Brown. Also on the list is Judge Priscilla Owen, who, "strategists say the White House is evaluating whether her reticence and mild manner would be a strength or a weakness under interrogation in the Senate." The Times lists...

Source: Clement Not Bush's Choice for High Court Source Tells ABC News Much-Discussed Potential Candidate Isn't the White House's Choice for Supreme Court Jul. 19, 2005 - Judge Edith Clement -- perceived by many observers as a potential frontrunner for the Supreme Court seat vacated by Justice Sandra Day O'Connor -- is not President Bush's choice for the high court. An informed source told ABC News they had spoken with Clement and said she received a phone call from the White House this afternoon. According to the source, Clement was thanked for meeting with the president and sharing her views...

I met Judge Edith Clement several weeks ago at Bill Pryor's investiture on the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals. She is extremely sharp. She is also close friends with Judge Pryor, which ought to tell all Freepers about her judicial philosophy. The fact that she personally attended Judge Pryor's investiture and met with him and his family also should reassure most skeptics. She will be a great pick. Those are my 2 cents.

FROM NRO: Bait and Switch?!? [Jonathan Adler 07/19 02:38 PM] This would certainly set off Washington. I don't believe it, but it's an interesting thought. ------------------------------------------------ Something has happened in the past ten minutes. I've had three five (they keep IM'ing) people from the media and conservative think tanks IM to say we're on a wild goose chase -- the conservative think tank people say its an intentional one. According to them, we should not be looking at Edith Clement, but at her cohort on the Fifth Circuit, Edith H. Jones a/k/a the Female Scalia. My money is on Clement...

The Washington Post reported earlier (I can't find the link) on Edith Brown Clement: "Known as a conservative and a strict constructionist in legal circles, Clement also has eased fears among abortion-rights advocates. She has stated that the Supreme Court 'has clearly held that the right to privacy guaranteed by the Constitution includes the right to have an abortion' and that 'the law is settled in that regard.'"I don't believe for a minute that these statements have "eased fears" among anyone in the abortion-rights groups, and they shouldn't inspire fears among pro-lifers--which, judging from some of the blog commentaries and...

WASHINGTON -- President Bush is close to making his first nomination to the Supreme Court, and Washington was abuzz with speculation Tuesday about Judge Edith Clement of the U.S. Court of Appeals in New Orleans. There was no word from the White House on when Bush would disclose his selection but officials familiar with the process said it appeared an announcement was imminent. No one claimed to have been told the name by Bush, but Republican strategists and others focused on Clement, a 57-year-old jurist who was confirmed on a 99-0 vote by the Senate when she was elevated to...

Having been flooded with emails [on the impending SCOTUS nomination] lately, but this one stands out: The SCOTUS nominee will be Joy Clement. WH will announce quickly, probably Tuesday.Major players are all on board. Senate Democrats are okay with the nomination.Specter is pleased. His staff is gearing up as of late Monday night.Expect Democratic special interest groups to go nuts. A handful of Democratic Seantors will play 'mean' to pacify the base. (their bark will be worse than bite)Joy is like O'Connor on business issues and we are comfortable that she is with us on upcoming life issues.

Washington, D.C. is bracing for the firestorm sure to come over the nomination to the Supreme Court. With the departure of Justice O’Connor, the vacancy offers the chance to replace the "swing" vote that would make the most profound difference on issues such as abortion and racial preferences. There has been much talk about the lure to appoint a Hispanic or another woman, but for conservatives this is not the moment to take a chance. Their inclination is to go for the candidates with the surest records, marked off in their opinions, their writings, their speeches. And so conservatives, seeking...
