President Bush is close to making his first nomination to the Supreme Court, and Washington was abuzz with speculation Tuesday about Judge Edith Clement of the U.S. Court of Appeals in New Orleans. There was no word from the White House on when Bush would disclose his selection, but officials familiar with the process said it appeared an announcement was imminent.

I don't know much about her, so I'll wait to see Kennedy's reaction. If he doesn't like her, I will!

I'm placing bets that in typical Bush fashion...it's NOT gonna be Clement. It's gonna be the other Edith.

so I'll wait to see Kennedy's reaction. If he doesn't like her, I will! We know Kennedy will not like anyone. I would prefer to use Spector as the gage, if he likes her, then I will be concerned.

If Clement is the choice then all I can say is thank you GW for screwing over the base and giving in to the libs - abortion is not a right guaranteed in the constitution.

I don't know who is leaking Clement. I think the Left think she might be the best they can hope for and they are trying to get her name out there first to influence Bush's decision.
I don't put much stock in the prediction that Bush will nominate Clement.
I am not sure she is acceptable to the base.
I don't think Bush is going to nominate an unknown element. There has been too much focus on Souter who was also an unknown element who went to the Left.
I hope Bush nominates a proven conservative and not just someone who he hopes will be conservative.
I am not in favor of Clement. I hope it is the other Edith, too.

I agree, as secretive as this WH is the name won't get out this easily. Bush I thought is a man of bold strokes and Clement would not be a bold stroke.

I'm placing bets that in typical Bush fashion...it's NOT gonna be Clement. It's gonna be the other Edith. I hope so, Clement has no history on conservative issues, and thus is a female Souter waiting to happen. With Hillary in our future we cannot afford to take that risk. Bush must name the most rightwing judges he possibly can as a bulwark against a potential Clinton coup.
To: highball
This woman is another Souter...

The right to abortion at any time, anywhere is right after the separation of state and eminent domain for Target Superstores clause... ;]
