In the immensely critical battleground state of Pennsylvania, approximately 372,000 mail-in ballots were rejected. The situation perplexed many voters, but officials say there is an explanation for the confusion. ProPublica and the Philadelphia Inquirer co-published a report on Friday discovering that 372,000 mail-in ballots were rejected. Overall, one out of every five requests for mail-in ballots were rejected, according to the report. However, 90% of those mail-in ballots, about 336,000, were denied as duplicates. The reason for the confusion is because people may have previously and unknowingly already requested a mail-in ballot for the November election. Many Pennsylvanians who voted...

We've been throwing cold water on the administration's so-called exchange "enrollment" figures for months, and for good reason: They're incomplete to the point of deception. The Washington Post reported back in November that official tabulations were including anyone who's "selected a plan," which is the equivalent of placing an item in a virtual shopping cart online, regardless

The federal health-care exchange that opened a dozen days ago is marred by snags beyond the widely publicized computer gridlock that has thwarted Americans trying to buy a health plan. Even when consumers have been able to sign up, insurers sometimes can’t tell who their new customers are because of a separate set of computer defects. The problems stem from a feature of the online marketplace’s computer system that is designed to send each insurer a daily report listing people who have just enrolled. According to several insurance industry officials, the reports are sometimes confusing and duplicative. In some cases,...

October 11, 2013 Federal Exchange Duplicating Enrollments, Unenrolling Enrollees Patrick Brennan Bob Laszewski, a health-care consultant who’s been writing a lot about Obamacare (he’s a critic) relays a bizarre observation he’s heard from health-insurance companies participating in the federal exchange, which is used in 34 states. Based upon my survey of a large number of health plans accounting for substantial market share in the 36 states the federal insurance exchange is operating in, not more than about 5,000 individuals and families signed-up for health insurance in the 36 states run by the Obama administration through Monday. Here is one example from...

General Electric, Co. has been quietly informing gun shop owners that the company will no longer be providing lending services to them, the Wall Street Journal reports. GE Capital is apparently reconsidering its relationship to firearms companies following the Sandy Hook shooting.

On January 17, 2012, recall committees submitted recall signatures for Gov. Scott Walker, Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch, Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, Sen. Pam Galloway, Sen. Terry Molten, and Sen. Van Wanggaard to Wisconsin’s Government Accountability Board (“GAB”). Right away, the GAB began scanning recall petitions at a secret location. The GAB even set up a live web-cam where anyone can view the staff at work scanning and reviewing the recall signatures. There have been many concerns that thousands of fraudulent signatures would be counted in the recalls. During the 60 day circulation period, there were many reports of apparent...

I'm writing to address a problem of increasing scope -- duplicate threads. Let me be clear: I'm not talking about the rare threads that are blessed by management, and are duplicated because of their critical importance. I'm talking about the everyday duplication of the same story over and over again. There are several reasons I see for us getting duplicate threads: people thinking they get special credit for being "first to post", so multiple people post a breaking story. people who are too lazy to search People who think they are too important to search. bloggers who think that if...

I have been guilty of this as well even though I have searched for the keyword

Well, I wasn't totally 100% sure that that collage of pictures used to make a portrait of President Bush's face was made up of fallen US soldiers. I guess I'm still not 100% totally absolutely sure, but today's bit of wisdom on Moore's site is simply a long list of names followed by May they rest in peace. And may they forgive us someday. -- Michael Moore Plus, he finally titled yesterday's "post" THE WAR PRESIDENT. Should we check the list of names for duplicates? As I pointed out yesterday, the image of Bush is made up of 1410 individual...

Woman sues, saying her pictures were circulated at two stores By Claire Osborn AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF Wednesday, March 24, 2004 Employees at two Walgreens drugstores in Austin copied sexy photos that customers had brought in to be developed and passed them around to other workers, according to a lawsuit. The suit alleges that three employees of the photo lab at the Walgreens at 11724 Research Blvd. had a "stash" of more than 150 customer photos that they distributed among employees there and at the Walgreens at 6812 N. Lamar Blvd. "The photos range from a person posing in a bikini in...

I've been noticing that a number of posts have been re-titled by the freepers posting them. It's very irritating to find a decent article, search the title, and after finding no match, to post it, then later realize that it's already been posted. The search didn't yield a match because the poster changed the title. It's happened to me more than a few times, and it seems to be escalating. I glanced at the "posting guidelines" and found the following bulleted rule. Do include the original title - When you post an article, be sure to include the original title...

This is just a reminder that before one posts an article, one should check to see if the article has been previously posted in order to avoid duplication.Duplication causes several problems. Just like the old Monty Python skit about spam, if the same thing is posted over and over, it can drown out other valid posts. It needlessly consumes system resources. It fragments discussion. In general, moderators will pull duplicate postings when we are alerted to them or when we notice them. This has the benefit of eliminating the "spam" effect and it helps keep discussion from being fragmented. However, it...
