The New Guinea singing dog looks like a cross between a dingo and a wolf. Its head is on the smaller side with small brown eyes, a flat skull and erect ears that are set far apart. Its neck is strong and thick that goes down to its muscular body with a bushy fox-like tail. Their double-coated fur is normally light or dark brown with patches of white throughout its body and often at the tip of its tail. They can also have black or grey face masks. They’re quite small as they grow between 31-46 centimetres (1-1.5 feet) in...

This is the moment a dramatic dog tries to avoid getting her nails trimmed by fainting before the first snip. A video of the Oscar-worthy performance by a pit bull in the US went viral over the weekend after it was shared on Reddit. It shows the pooch ignoring her nail-clipper-wielding owner before finally giving up her front paw. Just as the owner about to trim the first nail, the dog makes her theatrical descent.

We all know it’s irritating, unsightly and unhygienic, but one case of dog fouling has been logged by police as a racist hate crime. The incident is among numerous alleged hate crimes uncovered by The Mail on Sunday that critics say are so petty they are undeserving of police time and expense. Further examples in a list of more than 2,500 alleged ‘hate incidents’ logged by the Metropolitan Police in 2015 and 2016 include: An envelope that had been opened and resealed; An accident involving a car that bore a Remembrance poppy; A disputed line call in a tennis match;...

A nine-month-old dog that weighs 12 stone (180lb) and stands six-foot-tall (1.8m) may be the world's biggest puppy. Enormous Euphrates was bred to replicate a prehistoric canine species and eats an impressive eight cups of dog food a day. Owner Jared Howser, 41, of Salt Lake City, Utah, said onlookers often confuse his puppy for a fully-grown adult. He said: 'At nine months there simply isn't another dog 180lbs and 31.5 inches to withers anywhere else in the world, she is an anomaly.

It's that time of the year again. That's right - it's time to hide your Thanksgiving turkey before your four-legged friend finds it first. Despairing dog owners in the US have been shaming their greedy pooches on social media with signs detailing their crimes. In one photo, a hungry Rottweiler is shamed after taking a sizeable chunk out of a turkey while it was being roasted over a fire. In another, a brazen mutt called Scotty is seen cowering beneath a blanket next to a sign reading: 'I ate all the leftover turkey, peed on the bathroom mat and pooped...

Cats and dogs are natural born enemies. And if these pictures are anything to go by, things are not going to change anytime soon. The hilarious photos capture dejected dogs looking for somewhere to sleep after being pushed out of their beds by crafty cats. Some of the pooches are seen appealing to their owners for help while others curl up on the ground, resigned to a night in the cold. A handful of the dogs were particularly resourceful, squeezing themselves on to the smaller cat cushions left empty by the four-legged thieves.

These days, it’s not enough to just bring Spot to the groomer. If you really want your dog to dazzle — and you have a chunk of cash to spend — you can take him in for a nip-tuck. Edgard Brito, a São Paulo vet and plastic surgeon, told DuJour that he wants his procedures to make pets more lovable to their owners. “I often say that a clean dog with well-kept teeth will always be in better contact with its owners, otherwise the dog ends up being [put to sleep],” he said.

Dogs aren't as honest and obedient as they might like to have us think. We think we're in control but new research shows that dogs can be very deceptive - especially when it involves them getting an extra sausage. Scientists found that dogs can be sneaky and manipulative in order to get what they want from humans.

Montana Firefighters Free Puppy That Got His Head Stuck in Wheel Using 'Lot of Coconut Oil, Patience'This playful puppy recently found himself in quite the "ruff" situation after poking his head through a wheel in his owner's yard in Montana. The owner had left the "inquisitive" coonhound named Blaze outside in his yard for a few hours on Monday. When he came home, he found Blaze "in a very precarious position" with his head stuck in a wheel, the Butte-Silver Bow Fire Department wrote on Facebook. The owner took him to a veterinary hospital, which then called the fire department...

There’s no easy way to rate dog intelligence. As psychologist Stanley Coren wrote back in the 90s, there’s adaptive intelligence (i.e., figuring stuff out), working intelligence (i.e., following orders), and instinctive intelligence (i.e., innate talent) — not to mention spatial intelligence, kinesthetic intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, and more. Indeed, as animal behaviorist Frans de Waal has argued, humans tend to judge animal intelligence in limited and unfair terms and often bungle the experiment. While labs at Yale, Duke, and around the world are studying this question, for now we do at least have data on one metric: working intelligence. Coren, in...

One day while hunting one of the highly trained dogs was chasing some pigs by scent and collided with a big buck kangaroo that then held and wrestled the dog by its protective gear (boars have tusks like knives), the owner was horrified that his dog or the kangaroo would get hurt and run in to save both parties. You can see the dog trying to escape, wanting nothing to do with the kangaroo. The big buck kangaroo releases the dog when the owner gets close but then moves in to try and attack the human.

A dog in northern Germany is once again taking on the role of surrogate parent to a big cat, this time helping rear a pair of rejected Bengal tiger cubs. Leon, a six-year old pointer mix, is helping his owner, zoo keeper Jeannette Wurms, raise one-month old Peach and Pearl at home after the cubs were rejected by their mother at Safaripark Stukenbrock near the town of Schloss Holte-Stukenbrock. “What’s exceptional about (Leon) is that he is a male with such motherly instincts which are very marked,” Wurms, who hand feeds the cubs, said on Monday. “He also acts as...

Claudia Fugazza, Ákos Pogány, and Ádám MiklósNovember 23, 2016 People have a remarkable ability to remember and recall events from the past, even when those events didn't hold any particular importance at the time they occurred. Now, researchers reporting in the journal Current Biology on November 23 have evidence that dogs have that kind of "episodic memory" too. The study found that dogs can recall a person's complex actions even when they don't expect to have their memory tested. "The results of our study can be considered as a further step to break down artificially erected barriers between non-human animals...

WASHINGTON, - A multi-talented black collie with a knack for sports showed off his skills at table tennis for a video going viral online. The video, shared on YouTube by America's Funniest Home Videos, features the collie, named Auggie, holding a table tennis paddle in his mouth and using it to return his owner's serves. Auggie shows he can keep the game going by repeatedly returning the ball, occasionally needing to jump up onto the table to get a better reach toward the ball. "This dog would definitely beat you at a game of ping pong," AFV said in the...

There were many unsung heroes on 9/11 — and some of them were dogs. Over 300 search and rescue dogs were deployed to Ground Zero and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, to help find people trapped in the rubble. Now, over a decade later, not all of these canine heroes are still with us. As a way to preserve the memories and remind us about their service, photographer Charlotte Dumas tracked down some of the veteran animals in 2011. These amazing dogs came from all over the country to work together and save lives on 9/11 — and here...
