First lady Jill Biden is traversing the country in the final weeks before the midterm elections, adding several stops to her already travel-heavy time in the White House and outstripping her recent predecessors in terms of campaign appearances and active fundraising. Biden this week visited Tennessee, Wisconsin, Georgia and Florida. Her solo trips, while President Biden has been traveling out west this week, have been focused on top issues for her portfolio, including education, the military and COVID-19, but also include fundraising for Democrats.

Jon Lindbergh, a pioneering aquanaut and the son of legendary aviator Charles Lindbergh, has died aged 88. While his father took to the skies, Jon took to the ocean - carving out a name for himself scavenging the depths of the seas as one of the world's earliest aquanauts. He pioneered cave diving and participated in dangerous underwater rescues - including one to find a hydrogen bomb that was lost in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Spain in...

While chatting with Olympics.com shortly after the pair won gold in the men's 10m synchronized diving competition at the Tokyo Games, Lee, 23, opened up about the "special" gift that Daley, 27, surprised him with before they ever hit the water. "He surprised me with this Olympic ring, which is something really cool and special because it's the exact same mold of his ring that he got years and years ago after his first Olympics," Lee told the outlet. "So regardless of how we did, he still had a little surprise he brought from England. It's so, so special that...
  • Admiral Tryon's Blunder

    09/30/2019 3:54:52 PM PDT · by robowombat · 15 replies
When Admiral Tryon gave the order that positioned both mighty war vessels Victoria and Camperdown on a collision course, he made a huge mistake. So huge that it cost the lives of more than 350 crew members. The Victoria now is the only shipwreck worldwide that is positioned vertically on the seabed. On 22nd June 1893, standing on the bridge of his flagship, HMS Victoria, Admiral Tryon was the commander of the biggest battleships of the biggest Marine/Navy worldwide. Having the coastline of Tripoli, Lebanon, already in view, the Admiral commanded his fleet to turn around. At a distance of...

The ship looks almost exactly the same as the day it sunk beneath waves in 1911.At 60 metres long and built in Leith, Scotland in 1897, ‘The Gunilda’ sunk after it struck some rocks and could not be saved. Now, these stunning images have been captured 107 years after the sinking when a small group of divers revisited the vessel. Becky Kagan Schott and her team dove an incredible 270 feet deep to reach the Gunilda and photograph her remains....

The water conditions were perfect — “beautiful, clear, green” — when Sean Smyrichinsky went diving last month off the north coast of British Columbia. The 45-year-old Canadian had joined two friends for a three-week fishing expedition. Setting off on his own one day, Smyrichinsky went searching for sea cucumbers that their small crew could harvest the following day. Using a DPV, or a diver propulsion vehicle, Smyrichinsky plunged 25 to 30 feet down into the bay. Ahead of him, a mysterious object emerged. “And I thought, what a cool rock formation,” he said. “It’s perfectly round.” As he approached the...

Bob is quite the dog. He's becoming known for his spiral stunt to the bottom of his owner's pool, pawing and clawing and paddling his way down to the depths, and then coming up for air with his prized toy in his mouth. "He's Bob, and we've named him Bob the Amazing Diving Dog," said his owner, Kristie Navarrette. Her family took Bob in as a stray four years ago. Bob's unique trick became known to the family one summer afternoon when the pooch was poolside with his plastic toy. "I was floating one day in the pool and he...

From the look on these divers' pained faces, it would be easy to think they had just belly-flopped into the water. But their eye-rolling grimaces, which range from the outright hilarious to the frankly frightening, were a common sight at the FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China. As the athletes leapt off the springboard, these amazing photos show their fierce level of concentration on getting every move right - even if it did mean gurning all the way to the bottom.

Every summer, sprinklers, pools, ponds, lakes, creeks, rivers, and oceans are invaded by swarms of people looking to escape the heat. Water is wonderful! It offers a refreshing playground in which to frolic. Great memories are had around water including fishing, skiing, surfing, tubing and swimming. Many swimmers have feelings of fear and joy when it comes to remembering the high dive. It doesn’t matter if the high dive was the standard board 12 feet above the water, a rock outcropping, or a local bridge. The experiences all take the individual through a similar range of emotions. In reflection, it...

A British woman pushed the boundaries of human endurance to new levels yesterday as she dived 96 metres (314ft) below the surface of the Atlantic and back again on a single, very deep, breath. Sara Campbell — “part woman, part fish” — broke the world record in the extreme sport of freediving, whose participants dice with death by submerging themselves to lung-crushing depths without breathing apparatus. Holding her breath for three minutes 36 seconds, she went deeper than any female freediver has gone before without weights or equipment to hasten her descent, or an airbag to speed her back to...
