Mark Lenzi, the 1992 gold medalist in men's springboard, died Monday at age 43.
The American diver was hospitalized in Greenville, N.C. two weeks ago after suffering a series of fainting spells.
Lenzi earned gold at the Barcelona Olympics and followed it up with a bronze medal performance in Atlanta. He was an All-American diver at the Indiana University, winning championships in the one-meter springboard, three-meter springboard and platform events in 1989.
No American man has won a diving medal since Lenzi.

I heard recently about a runner who died about a week after running a half marathon. I don’t believe he was doing anything particularly strenuous at the time.

Don’t think so. The story said he is survived by his wife.

I have a close friend, who is a hyperathelete
Who, while resting, usually has a heart rate of ~45/min
A marker for hyper-efficiency
Has developed spells, at rest,
of supra-ventricular tachycardia
Lasting for minutes, rate 200+/min
Scared the Pee out of him

Fainting spells in an athelete is frequently a sign of serious heart electrical problems.

I heard recently about a runner who died about a week after running a half marathon.
On any given weekend, there are probably 50,000 - 100,000 runners doing marathons and half marathons.
Not all are 100% healthy and sadly it's not unusual for some to become statistics.

Apparently it doesn’t do any good to be in a hospital at the time...
“Lenzi had been hospitalized the last two weeks because of fainting spells caused by low blood pressure.”

Yeah, it makes sense that they might die during the marathon....but out of the blue a week later?

Die anyway.

Granted, that's unusual, but running may not have been the cause (direct or indirect).

That’s what I thought, but he was married to a woman. I know, I know, but it made me less certain (which I wasn’t anyway).
