Dave Bing delivered his final official speech as Detroit’s mayor on Wednesday, proclaiming that the city is much stronger now than it was four years ago despite going through the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. During the luncheon speech to the Detroit Economic Club, the former NBA basketball player lamented that his efforts to fix the city’s beleaguered finances were slowed by rules governing contracts with workers and an often adversarial City Council. […] Detroit has been under state oversight since March when Gov. Rick Snyder appointed turnaround specialist Kevyn Orr as emergency manager. Under state law, Orr has...

Outgoing Detroit Mayor Dave Bing says the once-thriving automotive capital of the world had no choice but to file for bankruptcy after it “hit bottom,” buried by high pension and health care obligations and millions of dollars in bond debt. But Bing told The Associated Press that while he anticipated the decision to make Detroit the largest city in U.S. history to seek bankruptcy protection, he remains convinced the state could have done more to help Detroit avoid it. … (Michigan Gov. Rick) Snyder’s office says the governor and legislators have found ways—outside of a state bailout—to help Detroit. These...

Menino apologizes after Detroit mayor takes offense (Newser) – Detroit's a little touchy these days, as Boston Mayor Tom Menino has found out. Menino apologized yesterday for his "poor choice of words" while offering a little constructive criticism about the bankrupt city, reports CBS News. The flap began when Menino told the New York Times magazine that he would "love to go" to Detroit. But then he added this: "I’d blow up the place and start all over. No, seriously, when it takes a police officer 90 minutes to answer a call, there’s something wrong with the system. Forty...

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, the 69-year-old former NBA star and Hall of Famer, says he will not seek another term in office. Instead, he will explore a bid for Wayne County executive. His decision not to seek re-election is not a huge surprise, given that the struggling city is currently being run by a state-appointed emergency financial manager who is considering a municipal bankruptcy. The announcement leaves former Detroit Medical Center chief Mike Duggan and Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon as the two frontrunners for the four-year term. Five other candidates are in the running. The top two vote-getters on...

Shortly after Barack Obama won reelection in November, New Jersey governor Chris Christie pointed out that Republicans’ cloudy political prospects had a bright silver lining. “One of the reasons you have 30 Republican governors in America, and why we’re the only organization to add Republican strength,” Christie said, “is because people see us getting things done.” Christie’s stance countered most of the elite postelection commentary, which gleefully pronounced the Republican Party’s political irrelevance. But the governor was right. Since Obama first took office in 2008, Republicans have picked up a net nine governorships, bringing their total to 30 states,...

His predecessor, Chief Warren Evans, was also forced to resign after sleeping with a police officer Monique Patterson. In a bizarre coincidence, Godbee is also accused of having an affair with Patterson. But...

Dave Bing, the mayor of Detroit, knows all about performing under pressure before a crowd. As a Hall of Fame point guard with the Detroit Pistons, he routinely went up against the NBA's best. But as that debt-ridden city's mayor for the last two years, he's become embroiled in a potentially cataclysmic showdown with its four dozen public employee unions. Presenting his proposed 2011-12 budget to the city council before a packed house on April 12, Bing declared that municipal workers must contribute more toward union-negotiated health and pension plans. Unless they concede, he would invoke a new Michigan...

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing has defended the fire department for its response to what he described as "a natural disaster" after wind-whipped flames destroyed dozens of homes across the city. Asked at a news conference Wednesday whether the department was adequately staffed, Bing said it was important to point out that nobody was killed. Fire Commissioner James Mack says the department is budgeted for about 500 firefighters, about 20 fewer positions than last year. He says the 236 on duty Tuesday is typical. Eight of the 85 fires Tuesday were related to downed power wires, two were arson. Mack says...

The Rev. Jesse Jackson came to Detroit last weekend pushing green jobs for the U.S. economy. On Monday, the Cadillac Escalade carrying him around the city was stolen and stripped. Does building replacement $1000 rims count as "green jobs?" Jackson came to Detroit as part of UAW President Bob King's "Jobs, Justice and Peace" march on Sunday, which drew about 5,000 people to a combination protest and Democratic Party spirit parade. A day after the rally, the 2009 Cadillac Escalade SUV that Jackson used to get around Detroit went missing from a parking lot near his hotel. According to WXYZ-TV,...

Jesse Jackson's car stolen in Detroit September 4, 2010 The Rev. Jesse Jackson found out just how rough things are in Detroit. Several Detroit media outlets reported thieves stole Jackson’s ride — a 2009 Cadillac Escalade — from a parking lot near the city’s Doubletree Hotel. The SUV was later recovered, but it was found without its rims and one of its windows had been broken, according to Detroit’s WXYZ-TV. Jackson was in Detroit for a march and rally called “Rebuild America: Jobs, Justice and Peace.” Just days after Jackson’s SUV was stolen, one of Detroit Mayor Dave Bing’s vehicles...

DETROIT, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- The Rev. Jesse Jackson and Detroit Mayor Dave Bing experienced the city's lawlessness firsthand in recent days when they were targeted by car thieves. Jackson was in the city last weekend for a march to promote peace and justice. A Cadillac Escalade he was using in the city disappeared from a parking lot, WJBK-TV reported. The vehicle was found on a Detroit street stripped of most of its salable parts. Bing lost the tires from a GMC Yukon Denali assigned to him as a secondary vehicle, Detroit's WDIV-TV reported. The theft occurred overnight Tuesday while...

The fire of 1805 burned the city of Detroit to the ground, leaving little more than ashes and broken dreams. Detroit’s motto, Speramus meliora; resurget cineribus ("We hope for better things, it will rise from the ashes") was crafted in reaction to this terrible disaster. And Detroit did, indeed, rise again. It became known as the Paris of the Midwest in the early days of the 20th Century owing to the beauty of its homes and buildings and tree-lined boulevards. In the 1930s, the success of its sports teams led to a reputation as the City of Champions. In the...

BIRMINGHAM, Mich. (AP) -- Detroit Mayor Dave Bing said Thursday the city has no answer to the recent spike in violence that has left at least 12 people dead, including a patrolman, two teenage boys, a grandmother, the adult son of another police officer, and a 7-year-old girl.

It's not news that too many government workers get way too sweet of a deal in comparison to those in the private sector. It's no different in cash-strapped Detroit, one of the country's hardest-hit economic areas. Mayor Dave Bing today criticized leaders of the city's largest union [American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, or AFSCME] for foot-dragging on contract negotiations, saying it's costing the financially strapped city $500,000 a month and could result in more layoffs. "Either they can't read, they can't add or they can't comprehend," Bing said at a press conference this morning in his office...

Dave Bing has just signed on to four years of maybe the most futile and thankless job in America: mayor of Detroit. What in the world was he thinking? "I wouldn't have taken this job if this wasn't doable," he tells me. "I finished basketball in 1978, then went into my own business in 1980 and did it for 29 years. . . . Now I get to the end of that career and probably should have retired. But there was a calling greater than anything that I ever envisioned, and that was to help bring this city back." In...

DETROIT -- The key to survival in tough times is to surround yourself with as many comforts as possible. That's why the office is decorated with basketball memories. They soothe and give the warmth and energy needed to deal with yet another round of social and political uppercuts. There's a leather Wilson basketball on the shelf behind the desk, commemorating the 18,000th point scored in a wonderful career. A framed Pistons jersey hangs on a wall. A group picture with fellow members of the NBA's 50th Anniversary Team is on another wall. Crystal trophies and awards are tucked away neatly...

DETROIT -- Detroiters on Tuesday elected basketball legend Dave Bing as their mayor, sweeping incumbent Ken Cockrel Jr. from office and giving the ex-Pistons great at least through the end of the year to make a dent in the city's myriad problems.

(WXYZ) Detroit businessman Dave Bing is ending the speculation, and officially throwing his hat into the ring as a candidate for mayor of the city of Detroit. The Detroit Free Press says Bing confirmed his run in an exclusive interview Thursday night. At least a half dozen other people, including Interim Mayor Ken Cockrel, Jr., have also said they will run in the February 24 special primary. In preparation for a run for the mayor's office, Bing has moved into the City of Detroit, and changed his voter registration. He is the only outsider, with no official connection to the...
