(WXYZ) Detroit businessman Dave Bing is ending the speculation, and officially throwing his hat into the ring as a candidate for mayor of the city of Detroit.

The Detroit Free Press says Bing confirmed his run in an exclusive interview Thursday night. At least a half dozen other people, including Interim Mayor Ken Cockrel, Jr., have also said they will run in the February 24 special primary.

In preparation for a run for the mayor's office, Bing has moved into the City of Detroit, and changed his voter registration. He is the only outsider, with no official connection to the city, to consider a run.

Bing played in the NBA from 1966 to 1978, averaging 20.3 points a game and playing in seven all-star games. A former rookie of the year who played nine of his 12 seasons with the Detroit Pistons, he was named one of the 50 top players in NBA history in 1996.

He's now chair and CEO of the Detroit-based Bing Group, a $160 million-a-year metals company. He would have to divest himself of the firm and a $60 million Detroit riverfront housing development if he became mayor, and would have to move to Detroit from the suburb of Franklin if he decides to make what would be his first run for elected office.

Who’s the most conservative out of all of the candidates, after the final number of candidates is officially known? That’s the only question that I would seriously ask. Detroit has truly needed lots of help on a variety of issues for several decades and counting, and if they would ever seriously pick a conservative to take over, then many much needed improvements to the entire city would actually happen. The ongoing political trend of leftist dominance of the majority of U.S. cities has got to end, if cities really want to ever seriously improve upon themselves on all of the issues.

Well, being a conservative in Detroit is like having leprosy, it is the most liberal city in the nation.

Bing is a very successful business owner and because of his status as a sports star he very well might win the primary on this alone.

I don’t know his political leanings, but it seems he can manage a business well, that is a big plus compared to king Kwami.

That's going to hurt him bad. He'll be painted as the Oakland County candidate, like Freman Hendrix was.

I doubt any conservatives are running. Bing's a democrat, although less of one probably then any elected pol out there in Detroit unless Keith Butler moves back to Detroit and runs.

I'd probably vote for him if I lived in Detroit, more by default than anything else. He seems to have a good head on his shoulders.

Since Dave Bing isn’t written Dave “Bing” then assume it is his name. :)

Seems like a class guy (from what I can tell here).

Certainly better than electing another “Community Organizer”.

He was a terrific basketball player. Saw him a lot when the Pistons came to Chicago.

Reading what he has done after his NBA career it seems he is doing very well as a businessman also.

Heck, I think Detroit could, and has done, far worse in the past. Getting a Republican or Conservative elected is a pipe dream there, but I would take a decent moderate Democrat with business sense as the next best thing.

Well, it’s sort of mixed-metaphor apropos, since Detroit has become, at best, the Dribble Glass of US cities.

Always liked Dave Bing. He was making a success out of Bing Steel at a time when the US steel industry was in decline, so he's obviously not some dumb jock. I've never heard of any scandal connected to him. Big improvement over Kwame.

I read once that toward the end of his career, his eyesight was so bad, he was legally blind without his glasses. He couldn't see the rim, just a white blur where the net was, but continued to be a great shooter.

Folks,

You really need to see Franklin. A little hamlet were homes are like 1/2 Million Plus.... Wow what a change that would be to Detroit...
