Excerpts from the final Detective Dan Rather mystery by David Burge It was a blustery March morning in Manhattan. I hiked up the collar on my trenchcoat and stepped out into a fresh sheet of snow that had fallen in front of the seedy West 80's flop house I call home. Pretty stuff, that snow. But just below the surface it can conceal something icy, something treacherous. Something that can make your Florsheims lose their grip, set your arms and legs windmilling spastically, cause you to make a violent, jarring, assplant into a frigid sidewalk filth-slushee. And in my line of business...

Photo by Billy Smith III Blogger sheds no tears for Rather By MARLON MANUEL The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 03/10/05 Amid the wafting smells of spicy meatballs and wine, in front of a Sony projection TV in Sandy Springs, Harry MacDougald clutched a Samuel Adams in his left hand Wednesday night as Dan Rather bid adieu after 24 years at the anchor of the "CBS Evening News." But MacDougald did not cry in his beer. Along with 50 guests, including many prominent Fulton County Republicans, the Atlanta attorney cheered the final night of Rather's anchor reign in a basement...

Phil Brennan, NewsMax.comThursday, March 10, 2005 America's media elite is awash in a flood of tears over Dan Rather's departure tonight as anchor of the CBS Evening News, which they would like to convince the nation is a tragedy of Homeric proportions. For Red State America, however, it's a night to rejoice – one of the nation's most demonstrably biased broadcast journalists has lost his bully pulpit and will no longer be able to peddle his far-left agenda to his millions of nightly viewers. They agree with Walter Cronkite, who now says that Rather should have stepped down years ago....

An exuberant crowd of Dan Rather detractors met this afternoon at Veterans Memorial Park in Metairie, Louisiana, a suburb of the Big Ezy, to celebrate Dan Rather’s retirement and to participate in a Jazz Funeral for Liberal Bias in the Media. The crowd was in a partying mood, as it “second-lined” to the music of a New Orleans jazz band. Two popular Republican state reps, Steve Scalise and John Labruzzo, wowed the crowd with their Rather comments. Although Rep. Scalise cautioned the crowd that this is just the “beginning” of the end of liberal bias in the media, the exuberance...

NEW YORK (AP) - A veteran "60 Minutes" staffer sued CBS on Wednesday for alleged age discrimination and defamation, charging that the network used the flawed report on President Bush's National Guard service as an excuse to try to ease her out. Esther Kartiganer, 67, filed the lawsuit on the last day that Dan Rather, the newsman who presented the Bush report, appeared as anchor of the CBS evening news after 24 years. Rather, 73, will continue as a full-time "60 Minutes" reporter. Kartiganer said in court papers that her defamation claim is based on a statement by Leslie Moonves,...

Dan Rather's sign-off at the end of the March 9 CBS Evening News, as corrected against the closed captioning by the MRC's Brad Wilmouth: "We've shared a lot in the 24 years we've been meeting here each evening. And before I say good night this night, I need to say thank you. Thank you to the thousands of wonderful professionals of CBS News, past and present, with whom it's been my honor to work over these years. And a deeply felt thanks to all of you who have let us into your homes night after night. It has been a...

NEW YORK (AP) -- Dan Rather, whose network reporting career spanned from the Kennedy assassination to the deadly tsunami, prepared to sign off Wednesday after 24 years as "CBS Evening News" anchorman. Rather was the public face of the legendary news division since replacing Walter Cronkite on March 9, 1981. His first newscast included a story about English girls imitating the hairstyle of Price Charles' bride-to-be, Diana. He's the second of the three men who dominated network news for more than two decades to step down in four months. NBC's Tom Brokaw exited in November, leaving ABC's Peter Jennings remaining...

The fetid amusement of killing Dan Rather ends tonight. . . . There's no pride in watching the deconstruction of a man. . . . And you can take your CBS backstabbers who found in Rather's last hours of weakness a chance to rise up and join the chorus of haters -- becoming smaller themselves as the time of his career suicide drew near -- . . . And yes, that includes Walter Cronkite. Take them all away. Anybody who found joy in this deserves to rot in their own mean-spiritedness. . . . From the tut-tut tone of Wolf...

WASHINGTON - It was an intimate political gathering: Sen. John F. Kerry [related, bio] playing host to about 100 of his richest friends. Kerry huddled with his top fund-raisers Monday night in his Georgetown mansion, preparing a massive money push aimed at keeping the defeated presidential nominee's ambitions alive. ``He wants to keep his team together,'' said one member of Kerry's national finance team. ``He's looking ahead. He will be a strong voice in the party.'' Strategists say Kerry will use his new political action committee, Keeping America's Promise, to promote his agenda, help party causes and keep his army...

The Dan Rather era may be over at "CBS Evening News ",complete with the self congratulatory special segments. At least Rathers critics could enjoy Donald Trump being cued up on "Fox News Sunday " to say "Dan, you 're fired ". They know, as does everyone else, that it is only a matter of time before Rathers last journalistic assignment, the low rated "60 Minutes Wednesday ", is canceled, and he will be gone for good...

A rare TV event, a tradegy, will play out Wednesday at CBS, as Dan Rather retires from the CBS anchor chair.Rather was done in partly by an adrenaline craving that forced him to be the center of everything. More tragic was a narcissism that deluded him into believing that he could still be the best big story reporter while juggling many CBS jobs, including the celebrity role of 'Evening News' anchor.Instead, some of his handiwork helped to undermine the credibility of not just CBS, but American journalism in general. His lack of reporting may have been an important cause of the...

If journalistic fraudulence and treason were actual prosecutable offenses today, there wouldn’t be enough jails cells to hold the thousands of Blame-America-First media leftists like Dan Rather who continually betray our country through their anti-American sentiment, which manifests itself regularly through their hatred of President Bush, the U.S. military and the softball defense of anti-U.S. Democrats Ted Kennedy, Robert “KKK” Byrd, John Kerry and other like-minded political terrorists who hate America. “Had this happened anywhere but America, [Dan] Rather would have lost his job on the spot, been investigated for his role in the forging of government documents, and most...

WASHINGTON -- CBS News reporter Lee Cowan calls the Bush/National Guard phony documents scandal possibly “the lowest point” of Dan Rather's career. But as Rather anchors his final edition of the CBS Evening News on Wednesday, the 24th anniversary of his taking the job, Accuracy in Media is reminding the public of another low point -- how Rather was involved in o ne of the most notorious examples of communist disinformation appearing in the U.S. media. It occurred as President Reagan was pursuing policies designed to win the Cold War and defeat the Soviet “Evil Empire.” Rather reported in a...
