A rare TV event, a tradegy, will play out Wednesday at CBS, as Dan Rather retires from the CBS anchor chair.
Rather was done in partly by an adrenaline craving that forced him to be the center of everything. More tragic was a narcissism that deluded him into believing that he could still be the best big story reporter while juggling many CBS jobs, including the celebrity role of 'Evening News' anchor.
Instead, some of his handiwork helped to undermine the credibility of not just CBS, but American journalism in general.
His lack of reporting may have been an important cause of the mistake that could turn out to be the defining moment in his career.
An investigative panel found that an 'overworked' correspondant Rather covering the Republican National Convention and Hurricane Frances, basically just read what was given to him on the '60 Minutes Wednesday' show that trumpeting unauthenticated memos that raised questions about President Bush's Texas National Guard career.
Incapable of fooling others anymore, Rather hasn't given up on fooling himself, in a way that resonates with the tradegy of another star of his generation, Pete Rose.
His tragic inability to relinquish the self image of overstating his own importance for a more mature understanding of his role as the face of CBS News will forever tarnish his place in history.

Narcissim is a real Tradegy.
Now the delusional p.o.s. is the center of personal humiliation. Perfect justice!
The Wall Within
Very true...
Deluded narcissim is a serious problem nationwide, as is taught in public schools.
What's a tradegy? Is it an orgy of trade or something? [grin]
If you're trying to describe a regretful event, it's a "tragedy". :-P
Agreed!
See the title.
I don't know what a 'tradegy' is either, but it certainly stunes my beeber.
It's vey series, that deluded narcissm is.

"He should be imprisoned for using the mass media since the 60's to push his lying communist agenda trying to undermine this great country."
EXACTLY SO!
"Narcassim" is our informant against the drug lords in Afghanistan. I don't know what he has to do with Dan Blather, the narcissist. ;)
No, that's Narcassim. Narcissism would illustrated by a picture of Dan Rather looking at footage of himself or preening in the mirror.
Have we heard from Narcassim lately? Last I heard, he was heading up to the poppy fields.
This has played out like a wonderful good old fashion western where the good guys wearing the white hats take down the villains wearing the black hats. All that was left of Blather was to sport one of those handkerchiefs tied around the neck and then draped under the chin at the read to pull up and cover his identity. I love it.
A tradegy would be beyond rare, I think it would be unique.
