1. Myth: There's corn in canned corned beef One of the most enduring misconceptions about canned corned beef is its connection to actual corn. Many people when seeing the term "corned," might naturally assume it has something to do with the vegetable. But there's actually no corn in canned corned beef. The name "corned" beef actually refers to the traditional curing process for beef, which was preserved with large grains of salt, also known as "corns." These salt crystals were generously rubbed onto the beef to help draw out the moisture and prevent bacteria from growing in the meat. It...

Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan met with Jewish community leaders at a Miami-area deli on Tuesday during a swing through Florida to raise money ahead of a possible 2024 presidential run, reports Jewish Insider’s Gabby Deutch. Earlier in the day Hogan had breakfast with former Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT). Aventura adventure: “Our allies, including Israel, need a strong and united America leading the world,” Hogan, a Republican, tweeted after the event, which took place at Mo’s Bagels & Deli in heavily Jewish Aventura, just north of Miami. Attendees at the event included Aventura Mayor Howard Weinberg and other local officials...

Arby's limited-time menu has recently grown by four new sandwiches, all of which are currently available nationwide. Seemingly taking a page out of Popeyes' book, the chain has grown its already strong fish sandwich category with an additional spicy offering. Plus, a beloved classic carrying seven ounces of corned beef has also made a return (or has it?). 1 Crispy Fish Sandwich arby's crispy fish sandwich Courtesy of Arby's The classic Arby's offering during Lenten season, this sandwich is a must as soon as spring rolls around. It's made with a crispy filet of wild-caught Alaskan Pollock, tartar sauce, and...

VIDEOI've been hearing about it but I finally got a sous vide. Inexpensive since I don't need all the bells and whistles such as pairing with my phone so I can operate it remotely which I don't understand since I have to be there to place the vacuum sealed meat in the container. Here is my first attempt at using the sous vide in which I cook corned beef. I had a few minor rough patches which almost inevitably happens when you use a new piece of equipment. After a couple of tries I got the timer set right and I...

You know what corned beef is, right? (If you don't, this handy explainer might help.) Since you're now so well-versed in the art of pickled brisket, let's move on to pastrami, corned beef's slightly more luxurious cousin. Here's what you need to know about the historic sandwich staple. What is pastrami? While corned beef is typically made from brisket, pastrami generally comes from the cow's navel area, Serious Eats reports. The navel cut is a fatty one, and it's also likely to stand up well to the long cooking process that's to come. When you eat it, it's less stringy...

VIDEOIn a previous video, I showed you how to smoke a maple syrup corned beef (link below). In this video, I take that incredibly delicious smoked maple corned beef and make a delicious Reuben sandwich. Since most of you, like me (at least for now), probably don't have a Panini press, I show you how to make it without the aid of that press. One important thing I learned was don't put your sandwich back on the plate on which you placed the sliced corned beef without wiping it dry first in order to avoid sandwich soginess. The second sandwich...

VIDEOI like boiled corned beef but, let's face it, too much of it can be boring. And since I have been eating a lot of corned beef lately due to the sales on it leading into St. Patrick's Day, this year I decided to switch gears and smoke a four pound corned beef using a maple syrup rub with some other ingredients which you can see in the recipe below. The result was much better than I expected to the extent that I plan to primarily smoke my corned beef rather than boil it in the future.Recipe:4 lbs corned beef...

VIDEO This is a great deal I found this week at Aldi. Only $1.99 per pound for this corned beef. In fact, I was surprised it happened so early since St. Patrick's Day is still 2 weeks away. I'm sure there will be other deals but why wait? Grab this one while there are still supplies available. In addition to enjoying this corned beef for dinner, I also heated up several slices of leftover corned beef along with eggs and had them for breakfast this morning.

China's foreign ministry has denied reports that Chinese food companies are canning human flesh and selling it in Africa as corned beef. The country's state-run Xinhua news agency said one tabloid newspaper in Zambia was falsely quoting an unnamed woman living in China. She said Chinese firms were collecting dead human bodies, marinating them and packing them in tins. Chinese spokesman Hong Lei said the reports were "irresponsible".

To eat or not to eat corned beef and cabbage is a question worth chewing on. It is a culinary decision facing many area Irish Roman Catholics celebrating St. Patrick's Day today who debated the issue this week, given that the holiday falls on a Lenten Friday. But, as the luck of the Irish would have it, they don't have to feel guilty. Area Catholic bishops have given their parishioners a dispensation, meaning they won't have to avoid meat today. However, just in case people don't want to eat meat, the owners of Fitzgerald's Harp'n Bard in Clifton say the...

The responses just keep pouring in. All thanks to everyone for being so kind and helpful.... As the list is growing long, I'm just going to name the precincts which are reporting, and whatever conditions have been placed upon the respective indults (and if you're late to the party, you can find Round One and Round Two at the links). The Corned Beef Indult for the Traditional Celebration of St. Paddy's Day has been conceded in the (arch)dioceses of: Springfield in Illinois -- provided "one other day is observed as a day of abstinence in its place."Jefferson City --...

In response to my request in the post below, many readers have been so kind as to send in replies from their home dioceses as to whether an indult will be granted to permit the eating of the sacred corned beef sandwich on St. Patrick's Day, which falls on a Lenten Friday this year. Here are the reports to date: In the archdiocese of Boston, Cardinal-designate Sean Patrick O'Malley has granted the indult (there'd be a revolt if he didn't).In the diocese of Lincoln, Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz has granted the indult, while stipulating that "those who make use of such...

AS THE SEEMINGLY ENDLESS SPIDERWEB OF LIES SPUN BY former Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV unravels, the media has gone out of its way to question the credibility of…Karl Rove. Despite Rove’s demonstrable non-leak of Valerie Plame’s non-secret identity, the dogs continue to gather, hungry for a second term scandal, while the Wilsons’ blatant self-promotion erodes whatever basis they had for a story in the first place. Perhaps Joe Wilson’s two biggest whoppers were his claim to have spoken out because of his deep, non-partisan commitment to “truth,” and his inconsolable remorse that his wife’s closely guarded anonymity had become...

WASHINGTON - Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., revealed Friday that two years ago he discussed the blown cover of CIA operative Valerie Plame with then CIA director George Tenet and that Tenet "was furious." Tenet promptly called the Justice Department to demand an investigation into who in the Bush administration leaked Plame's identity to columnist Robert Novak, Schumer said at a hearing held by House and Senate Democrats. Novak revealed Plame's identity in July 2003 in a column in which he said she played a key role in having her husband, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, sent to Niger to investigate...

I am thinking about writing a letter to my local fish wrap because editor was crying about the Rove nonsense and the fact that Judith Miller was a hero to all for standing up for the press and their "First Amendment Rights" and protection of confidential sources. The jest of my letter is going to focus on why we shouldn't feel sorry for Ms. Miller and the rest of the press because they (the liberal press) are the first ones to applaud when the First Amendment protections to free speech during federal elections was attacked (McCain/Feingold) and when a court...

In journalism, the definition of “leak” suggests that it is applied to government officials who purposely give reporters secret or confidential information in order to publicize something they do not like so that it can be defeated before being voted upon. “Outing” a CIA agent is only a crime if the agent is under cover overseas or has been during the past five years. This law was created to prevent the assassinations of CIA agents on foreign shores as had been caused by Philip Agee in 1978 who listed CIA agents undercover in foreign cities, causing the murder of some....

Was it really a secret that Joe Wilson’s wife worked for the CIA? It's the top story in the Washington Post this morning as well as in many other media outlets. Who leaked the fact that the wife of Joseph C. Wilson IV worked for the CIA? What also might be worth asking: "Who didn't know?" I believe I was the first to publicly question the credibility of Mr. Wilson, a retired diplomat sent to Niger to look into reports that Saddam Hussein had attempted to purchase yellowcake uranium for his nuclear-weapons program. On July 6, Mr. Wilson wrote an...
