From a distance, Quinnipiac University’s new national poll looking at the 2020 Democratic primary looks fairly familiar. There’s former vice president Joe Biden atop the field, with a 19-point lead over the next-closest candidate, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). The rest of the top tier includes familiar names, too: Sen. Elizabeth Warren (Mass.), Sen. Kamala D. Harris (Calif.) and South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg. When we look at how the top tier has evolved, though, things get interesting.

A newly released poll by Quinnipiac University finds the governor's race between Ron DeSantis and Andrew Gillum virtually tied, with Tallahassee Mayor Gillum supported by 50 percent of likely voters and U.S. Rep. DeSantis by 47 percent. The Aug. 30 – Sept. 3 poll of 785 likely Florida voters (MoE +/- 4.3 percent) found men backing DeSantis over Gillum, 52 percent to 45, and women preferring Gillum, 56 percent to 43 percent. In his State of the Union address, President Obama will propose much he knows the Republican-controlled Congress will not enact, but his real agenda is to set the table for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign. Once again, the president will propose soaking the rich with higher estate, capital gains and bank taxes, while adding to entitlements for the working poor and middle class—new tax credits, higher child care allowance and more college tuition assistance. The White House crowed on Friday about the unemployment rate dropping a 10th of a percent. At the same time, the number of people out of the labor force reached a record high. The Obama administration can report all the funny numbers it wants, but the American people know in their guts that things are getting much worse. A recovering economy is supposed to create jobs, not shed them. According to government math, 115,000 new jobs were added in April. But over the same period, 522,000 people dropped out of the labor force and were not counted as unemployed. This...

New applications for unemployment compensation fell by 12,000 last week to 409,000, the Labor Department said Thursday. Initial claims from two weeks ago were revised up to 421,000 from an original reading of 417,000. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch had expected new requests for jobless benefits to drop to 405,000 in the week of Aug. 27 on a seasonally adjusted basis.

General Motors Co (GM.UL) posted a first-quarter profit on Monday and said it is making progress toward a turnaround expected to put it on track toward its first full-year profit since 2004. ................................................... Revenue rose to $31.48 billion from $22.43 billion in the pre-bankruptcy GM a year before. Net income -- after preferred stock dividends of $203 million to the U.S. and Canadian governments and GM's major union -- was $865 million, compared with a loss of $5.98 billion a year before.

We came THIS CLOSE to having one of the most massive tax schemes enacted intlo law and we are just now finding out that Climate Data proponents are FRAUDS? EARLY LAST MONTH, the accounting firm of Ernst and Young released a report concluding that the "nonperforming" loans of China's banks totaled $911 billion (40 percent of China's GDP)--a figure that far exceeds the Chinese government's own estimate of $164 billion. Beijing's response to the report was not subtle: "The report not only seriously distorts the actual assets quality of the Chinese banking sector," but "its conclusions are absurd and incomprehensible." <p>NEW YORK — AOL Time Warner acknowledged Wednesday that it may have improperly booked revenues from three transactions at its America Online unit, whose accounting practices are being scrutinized by federal regulators.</p> <p>The announcement marked a departure from AOL Time Warner's previous assertions that its accounting was sound, and followed word earlier in the day that an executive who negotiated many deals for America Online that are being investigated by the government has left the company.</p>
