The hack affected providers such as Google, Yahoo, Hotmail and MicrosoftCybersecurity professionals are warning anyone with a personal email account to change their passwords after stolen user names and passwords were being offered up for sale on the Internet, NBC News reported. Some 272.3 million accounts were stolen - and involve some of the biggest email providers, including Google, Yahoo, Hotmail and Microsoft, according to Alex Holden of Hold Security. "We know he's a young man in central Russia who collected this information from multiple sources," Holden told NBC News. "We don't know the way he did it or the...

At the end of April, Microsoft's Windows 10 nagware interrupted a live TV weather broadcast to urge meteorologist Metinka Slater to upgrade her computer.

A week later, while playing Counter Strike: Global Offensive to 130,000 spectators on Twitch.tv, Erik Flom was blasted out of his match by the Windows 10 installer. This was even after he spent a few frantic minutes trying to delay the upgrade until after his game had ended. The fun starts about nine minutes into this recording of the live stream. "F*ck you, Windows 10!" was Flom's response.

The technology is built into a Flexible Organic Light Emitting Diode (FOLED) touchscreen that can be bent by the user. In addition to the oft stated upsides of a bendy smartphone, a built-in bend sensor (similar to what the lab deployed in its recent ReFlex prototype) leverages the motion as another means with which to interact with the handset. The pair of disembodied hands in the demo video use the motion to move objects along the phone’s Z-axis. In the case of Angry Birds, that means stretching back the bird-catapulting slingshot. The tension on the phone correlates with that of...

Future Interfaces Group, a research lab within Carnegie Mellon University, released a look at a novel solution to this problem: making the skin on your arm and hand act like a touchscreen for your smartwatch. The system uses a signal-emitting ring worn on the finger to communicate with a sensing band attached to the watch. When the finger wearing the ring touches the skin, a high-frequency electrical signal spreads across your arm. It uses the distance between the ring and four pairs of electrodes in the watchband to triangulate the position of your finger in 2D space. "The great thing...

Biggest credential cache amassed by a single individual to dateThis week, an anonymous young Russian hacker calling himself “the Collector” just handed over roughly 232 million unique email account credentials and passwords on a social media forum, with a total cache of 1.17 billion records. The hacker claims he only wanted 50 rubles – approximately 75 cents – for all of the information, but ended up simply exchanging them for “likes” on his social media page and some favorable comments about him in hacker forums, according to cyber security experts. The obtained credential information breaks down as follows – over 57...

Help needed from any who have Roku and are viewing Internet feeds on their smart TV. A poster was nice enough to offer help for my DH several weeks back in attempting to wire up our television to use as a monitor. Since, that time the files saved on the computer were lost during a storm. The computer fried and buried..sigh. No longer have that information. Please help once again. Both he and I would be most appreciative with any help given. TIA

The Chinese are bright - even brighter than Romanian taxi drivers. They employ hackers whose only job is to infiltrate the U.S. government. Those hackers have supercomputers at their service. They have lists upon lists of relatives and friends and aides of powerful people. When they break into accounts, they don’t publicize it.

Last month, while we were all distracted by iPhone hacking and Jay-Z's web fiasco, Microsoft silently bumped off the ability for IT administrators to easily take the Windows Store off Windows 10 Pro PCs. Removing the software store, along with other bundled apps, from work machines is normally a good idea to prevent users from installing crap, breaking things and calling the help desk, and generally wasting time at their desks. The Redmond giant quietly posted a support notice warning sysadmins that for Windows 10 build 1511 and later, the ability to remotely disable the Windows Store through Group Policy...

PASCO, Wash. – As a precaution, CRF Frozen Foods of Pasco, Washington is expanding its voluntary recall of frozen organic and traditional fruits and vegetables. Quantum information science and technology has emerged as a new paradigm for dramatically faster computation and secure communication in the 21st century. At the heart of any quantum system is the most basic building block, the quantum bit or qbit, which carries the quantum information that can be transferred and processed (this is the quantum analogue of the bit used in current information systems). The most promising carrier qbit for ultimately fast, long distance quantum information transfer is the photon, the quantum unit of light. The challenge facing scientists is to produce artificial sources of photons for various quantum information...

Depending on whom you ask, Facebook is either the savior or destroyer of journalism in our time. An estimated 600 million people see a news story on Facebook every week, and the social network’s founder Mark Zuckerberg has been transparent about his goal to monopolize digital news distribution. Facebook’s stranglehold over the traffic pipe has pushed digital publishers into an uneasy alliance with the $350 billion behemoth, and the news business has been caught up in a jittery debate about what, precisely, the company’s intentions are. Will it swallow the business whole, or does it really just want publishers to...

With Flattr Plus, annoying and obtrusive ads will be removed from webpages just like with Adblock Plus. Users will also get to choose a monthly payment amount they want to spread across the websites they visit The payment system is similar to how Flattr works, except instead of a digital tip jar appearing on websites, Flattr Plus doesn't let you choose which websites get your money. Flattr Plus keeps track of the websites you visit and engage with, allocating your monthly payment across those websites proportionally. For websites to get that money, Adblock Plus' Ben Williams wrote in an announcement...

When Shelby Bonnie’s iPad went missing, he tracked its separate itinerary and entertained his followers with its whereabouts. When Shelby Bonnie’s iPad went missing, he tracked its separate itinerary and entertained his followers with its whereabouts. Last month, Shelby Bonnie’s iPad vanished from his carry-on bag somewhere at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport after a red-eye flight from San Francisco. He figured he would never see it again. But sometimes our devices aren’t ready to say goodbye. While Mr. Bonnie, an investment banker with Allen & Company, continued on his way to the Bahamas for a few days of relaxation, his...

* All in a good cause: FamilyNotes is for learning the Face API * Microsoft has GitHubbed a framework that could finally make an Internet-connected refrigerator useful: an application for family members to leave notes for each other. Well, actually FamilyNotes is a developer demonstrator with two aims: to give developers more examples of putting code together in the Universal Windows Platform, and to help Microsoft understand how UWP is going. The app, here, lets a user leave a note tagged for another user, and if the device (for example a tablet) identifies the recipient of the note (using facial...

Virtual reality has (justifiably) been the biggest story in the tech world over the past few weeks. Oculus launched the Rift, HTC launched the Vive and gamers are finally getting the chance to see how much potential VR has. But you don’t have to spend $600 on a headset to digitally alter the world around you. Augmented reality (AR) has been around in various forms for years, allowing consumers to see what furniture might look like in their homes, or to bring virtual figures into the real world, where they can interact with the environment.

Earlier this evening I got a call from my son, I could hear voices in the background so I just thought he had butt dialed me. I called back, planning to ask my son what his butt wanted. No answer. Strange. A few minutes later he called again. He couldn’t hear me, but I could hear him. He said “I’m not sure if you can hear me, but I’m at Kennestone Hospital ER”. He repeated that several times and eventually the call ended. I called the ER and eventually found out he was in a car accident, but he was...
