Apple will analyze the recovered iPhone that may hold the key to what happened last summer when two Florida teens disappeared on a boating trip, according to an agreement reached by the teens' parents in court today. The recovered iPhone belonged to 14-year-old Austin Stephanos, who went missing while on a boat trip with Perry Cohen, also 14, in July. The Coast Guard led an eight-day search in the Atlantic, covering 50,000 nautical miles. The boys' bodies were never found. But Austin's iPhone was on board when the boys' boat was recovered last month about 100 miles off the coast...

s the world watched the FBI spar with Apple this winter in an attempt to hack into a San Bernardino shooter's iPhone, federal officials were quietly waging a different encryption battle in a Los Angeles courtroom. There, authorities obtained a search warrant compelling the girlfriend of an alleged Armenian gang member to press her finger against an iPhone that had been seized from a Glendale home. The phone contained Apple's fingerprint identification system for unlocking, and prosecutors wanted access to the data inside it. It marked a rare time that prosecutors have demanded a person provide a fingerprint to open...

MnO2-coated batteries can now last 400 years, 200,000 cycles Doctoral research student Maya Le Thai was working in her laboratory with nanobatteries one day when she decided to try a new approach. She coated an entire gold nanowire with a manganese dioxide MnO2 shell and covered the assembly with a "plexiglass-like" electrolyte gel, but the resulting outcome was completely unexpected. As she "playfully" experimented with different materials, the resulting nanobattery produced effectively "unlimited" lifetime charge cycles lasting well over 400 years. Traditional nanowire-based batteries are thousands of times thinner than a human hair, highly conductive and feature a large...

The US-based company has sought approval from the government on setting up single-brand retail stores in the country. A government panel has recommended exempting Apple from mandatory local sourcing norms, a move which would pave the way for Apple to open single-brand retail stores in the country. The company had given a detailed presentation to the committee headed by Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) Secretary Ramesh Abhishek on April 19, on its products, technology, innovations and camera. "The committee has found that the company's products are cutting edge technology and state-of-the-art. It has recommended to exempt them from...

Those of us who have handled Classified government information are aghast at how Hillary Clinton handled Classified government information in such an intentionally careless way. We, including Hillary Clinton, were very specifically informed that the careless handling of Classified government information would result in imprisonment by, or killing by, the government. It is life and death serious. There is nothing more serious. We know how wrong her behavior was. But, does the average Democrat voter understand how wrong her behavior was? It is critical that some words and concepts are understood by all Americans. Hillary Clinton is basing the defense...

In the next decade, there will be tens of billions of connected devices—from thermostats and cell phones to parking meters and cars. Increasingly, these connected devices that make up the Internet of Things will be imbued with intelligence so that they can not only communicate, but transact, negotiate, collaborate and exchange value. The Internet of Things needs a Ledger of Things How will we handle this mind-boggling volume of data being transmitted, and do it in a secure way? “The Internet of Things needs a Ledger of Things,” says Alex Tapscott, coauthor with his father, Don Tapscott, of the "Blockchain...

US presidential primary apps leak supporters' phone data "...nearly 25 per cent were found to be exposing sensitive data... account details (email address and social media profile names), device phone number, GPS coordinates, and more..." Many US presidential primary apps gather users’ personal information and leave their sensitive data vulnerable to attackers, security researchers at Symantec warn. Symantec analysed the official mobile app behaviours of top primary candidates, as well as popular unaffiliated apps, using its Norton Mobile...

In the tech industry, one day a skill is hot, the next it's not. IT professionals spend a lot of their career learning, training, and trying to keep up. Job hunting site Dice prides itself on helping IT pros navigate which skills to pursue. It just concluded an analysis of its database of 80,000+ tech jobs from April 2015 through April 2016 to determine the fastest-growing skills based on job openings. Despite the fact that most of them are now thankfully long gone, many of them like Neil Kinnock remain and have very cushy jobs at the European Union where they have continued working for their Marxist agenda practically unnoticed."

An experimental plane flying around the world without a single drop of fuel landed in California after a two-and-a-half day flight across the Pacific. Piloted by Swiss explorer and psychiatrist Bertrand Piccard, Solar Impulse 2 touched down in Mountain View just before midnight (3 a.m. ET). Images of the elegant solar aircraft, which has the wingspan of a Boeing 747 but only weighs about as much as an SUV, flying over the Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco Bay mark a significant achievement. The team has seen the project beset with problems and setbacks during its pioneering airborne circumnavigation. "I'm...

The pilot of a solar-powered airplane on an around-the-world journey said Saturday that stopping in California's Silicon Valley will help link the daring project to the pioneering spirit of the area. Pilot Bertrand Piccard, who left Hawaii three days ago, said he hopes to fly over San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge before landing in Mountain View on Saturday night. "Can you imagine crossing the Golden Gate Bridge on a solar-powered plane just like ships did in past centuries? But the plane doesn't make noise and doesn't pollute,'' Piccard said a live video feed on the website documenting the journey. It's...

Microsoft is trying to avoid another PR disaster with its new AI bot. The company's latest program can describe what it "sees" in photos. "CaptionBot," as it's called, does a pretty decent job at describing simple everyday scenes, such as a person sitting on a couch, a cat lounging around, or a busy restaurant. But it seems to be programmed to ignore pictures of Nazi symbolism or its leader. CNNMoney gave CaptionBot several photos of Adolf Hitler and variations of the swastika to analyze, and it often came back with "I really can't describe the picture" and a confused emoji....

An Apple Store in Beijing. Facing a slowdown in sales of iPhones in the United States, Apple is looking to China for growth. Credit Gilles Sabrie for The New York Times For years, there has been a limit to the success of American technology companies in China. Capture too much market share or wield too much influence, and Beijing will push back. Apple has largely been an exception to that trend. Yet the Silicon Valley company is now facing a regulatory push against its services in China that could signal its good relations in the country may be turning. Last...
