<p>Giovanni's big fingers tapped away on his laptop as he typed a 600-word assigned report on the 1815 eruption of Tambora volcano in Indonesia.</p>
<p>Giovanni was into it. His eyes never left the screen and his earphones blocked out the drone of an air conditioner and chatter from a nearby table. Clicking open an encyclopedia on the wireless system, he found geology facts and carried text blocks to weave into his report.</p>

I am working with a client that has a LAN and high speed Internet connection in its central office. The client has several nearby "satellite" locations, each with one or two PCs, with only dialup Internet access. I am facing a challenge in keeping the remote PCs current with Windows updates. Trying to download them over a dialup connection will take HOURS. Here's what I would like to do instead: - At each PC, connect to Microsoft via dialup for a scan of needed updates - Record the list of updates - At central office, do download of updates and...

In most instances , you have to pay them to obtain information or to register! Thanks!!

The keys are then sent back to the virus creator where he/she can steal your passwords and credit card information. The virus named, Korgo, started showing up in the last week of May but it now has at least six different variants. To protect yourself from this nasty virus, Microsoft is urging all users to download the KB835732 Security Update. The...

Return of Colossus marks D-Day Tony Sale led the team to rebuild Colossus Mk2 Colossus Mk2, a wartime code-breaker hailed as one of the first electronic computers, has been rebuilt and reunited with Bletchley Park veterans. At Bletchley, the hub of British code operations, it crucially found the keys to break the Lorenz code used by Hitler to encrypt messages to his generals. Colossus Mk2 has been painstakingly put back together over a decade by computer conservationists for Bletchley museums. As part of D-Day celebrations, 30 war coders gathered to see it once more. Besides its code-breaking prowess, Colossus was...

I've tried everything I know and searched the internet including microsoft, but I aint, getting anyhere. Computer froze. When I restarted, it began trying to detect my ethernet card, then my printer. I know that "regular" PDF files, when viewed via Acrobat Reader, are read-only and non-modifiable. However, I have worked with other files (I think they're also PDF) that allowed me to type onto them (specifically, allowed me to type onto specific fields of a form). I realize that I cannot save the changes, but being able to type onto the form then lets me print it out with my typing there. How is this capability achieved? Is it a function of the program that CREATES the PDF file, or that of the viewer, or both? Thanks.

Sitekeeper is developed by Executive Software. It is designed to automate the distribution and installation of software patches and upgrades, by "pushing" them to client workstations. Does anyone have experience with this product? Thanks.

I like to play games sometimes at games.com. Some idiot was on there the other day acting like a jerk trying to send rude messages while the game was on. I basically told the idiot where to go and then he comes back and says he's going to mess up my password so I can't get back on the site using that screen name. I said whatever, muted the dude and that was that. I try to get back on the site with the same screen name and it won't work now!!Does anyone know how someone can mess up your...

This information comes from the LangaList, a GREAT, FREE computer and technology newsletter published by Fred Langa, formerly the Editor of Byte Magazine. This AOL scanning / blocking issue has been covered in two segments so far; here is the first one: AOL Madness (Warn Your Friends) AOL is at it again. This time, it's reading *inside* its members' emails, and preemptively blocking any messages that contain links to sites that AOL doesn't want you to see. Note: I'm *not* talking about simple mail blocks, where a mail is discarded if it originates from a "forbidden" address. No: AOL is...

Morena Michelangelo shops for food in reverse. When she enters her local Stop & Shop supermarket in Quincy, Mass., she meticulously unfolds and lines up six brown bags along the bottom of her shopping cart. And even though she has plenty more groceries to buy, she rings up and bags her chips and soda. Rather than a backward shopper, Ms. Michelangelo considers herself a progressive one. She uses new technology - a mobile computer and bar-code scanner - that she plucks from a rack and attaches to her shopping cart. It allows her to find, ring up, and bag her...

I hadn’t heard anything via the news today, but the DIS (Department of Information Services) the department responsible for upkeep of the state’s computer systems (Government, Schools, etc.) instructed all schools statewide that all computers, including workstations, servers, etc. MUST be shut down at the end of the school day today (Friday 4/16/2004). This is to apply to ALL computers tied in with the state network. The reason? An unmanageable number of viruses and an attack by hackers (probably allowed in via the email worms infecting the system). The network is suppose to be completely down through 8:00 AM Monday...

BOSTON (AP) - For years, futurists have dreamed of machines that can read minds, then act on instructions as they are thought. Now, human trials are set to begin on a brain-computer interface involving implants. Cyberkinetics Inc. of Foxboro, Mass., has received Food and Drug Administration approval to begin a clinical trial in which four-square-millimeter chips will be placed beneath the skulls of paralyzed patients. If successful, the chips could allow patients to command a computer to act - merely by thinking about the instructions they wish to send. It's a small, early step in a mission to improve the...
