How can someone ruin a password for an on-line game?(Question for programmer/hacker types)

I like to play games sometimes at games.com. Some idiot was on there the other day acting like a jerk trying to send rude messages while the game was on.

I basically told the idiot where to go and then he comes back and says he's going to mess up my password so I can't get back on the site using that screen name.

I said whatever, muted the dude and that was that. I try to get back on the site with the same screen name and it won't work now!!

Does anyone know how someone can mess up your password, and is there anyway to fix it?

I've never corresponded with this person except for in this game, so there's no way he could've gotten any info. from me. This is quite baffling and I'm thinking someone in this vast sea of knowledge must know how this could happen. Any responses would be greatly appreciated!

This person didn't have administrative priveleges did they? If not, it looks like thay have a hacker problem and it would be best to avoid that site.

If I were you, I'd create a new account and report him.

Don't mess with me, or I'll bounce you off this site, too!

I've already got a few different accounts. But it burns me up that I lost one of my screen names that I've had for a few years cause some idiot messed up my password!

Now I'll have to watch what I say to some of the jerks on there for fear they'll ruin my other screen names!

Even if I reported him and they took away his screen name, he'd just make a new one and start over again.

Why don't you just try to log in and then use that "Have you forgotten your password" function to have the password mailed to you?

Or, e-mail the site and explain what happened, let them help you out. If you have a paying account, it should be no problem to ID yourself, if it is a free account, just set up a new one.

In all likelyhood, the guy used your login name (screen name) and logged in with a bad password. After a certain number of unsuccessful attempts, ususally about three, your account becomes locked. It should be easy enough to reset your password. You could probably find out how to do that through the site's help. If that's doesn't help then try contacting the website via email.

My kids and I are looking for a way to play games online without all the annoying, obscene chat. Is there a simple way to turn it off, or a site that doesn't have it?

This site has an automatic censor that changes bad words into symbols like you'd see in a comic book. You know, "why you #*&@(&*!! dog", stuff like that.

But... there's always ways around it, plus it doesn't stop anyone from saying rude things. Most people are pretty good, but you always get jerks! It can't be avoided!

I play on yahoo games, but lots of cheaters on there...however I use the filter for bad words..and if someone in a game starts in, I just put him/her on ignore.

I love to play cards...wish there was a site that would be fun and safe for all.

It's a free site. It's no big deal, except when you get a character that logs almost 10,000 games over a few years, it makes you mad to have to start over with a new one. It's like you lose your veteran status! Dirty Rats!

I'd almost bet my house it was a DemoRat!

I'll have to try to intentionally mess up a screen name and see if it locks it. Maybe that's it!

I never gave the site my real e-mail address, cause I didn't want a bunch of junk coming. Plus, they're not great on responding from what I've heard!

I guess you get what you pay for eh? It's free so I guess I can't complain! Only about jerks who intentionally do stuff like this!

What does open source have to do with this? For all you know, the game service is running Microsoft IIS.

I don't think that's it! I made up a new name, intentionally messed up the password 10 times and it still works! Must be some other trick someone knows!

If the site has an X number of bad login tries lockout, all a person has to do is try to log in as you X number of times and then you'll get locked out. Just like 3 times and and your ATM card gets swallowed.

Ask the admin to reset your password.

"Now I'll have to watch what I say to some of the jerks on there for fear they'll ruin my other screen names!"

" Even if I reported him and they took away his screen name, he'd just make a new one and start over again."

That sounds a lot like the liberals are saying about fighting the terrorists.

Just give up, and shut up, and maybe they won't bother you.
