I was out on the Netflix last night and saw this new Coen Brothers movie that was available. I was always a fan of the Coen Brothers with "Fargo" being one of my favorite "dark comedy" movies of all time. I especially liked that car salesman fellow who was constantly screwing up and ended up getting his wife inadvertently murdered by having her kidnapped for ransom by a couple of bungling criminals who hated each other. Basically all their movies are worth watching with "The Big Lebowski" being another favorite. Especially when that John Goodman character throws his friend's ashes...

On the eve of the Oscars, here's a new film from the Coen brothers that's far droller and more genuinely subversive of Hollywood than the self-serving leaden propagandizing of Trumbo. As producers, directors, writers and pseudonymous editors, Joel and Ethan Coen have spent their careers successfully mining a contemporary seam of old-time studio forms such as screwball and noir. This time they have to be proficient at every genre - from elegant drawing-room comedy to splashy aquatic musicals Hail, Caesar! is a day in the life of a 1951 studio fixer called "Eddie Mannix". There once was a real-life Eddie...

For more than 30 years, Joel and Ethan Coen have created droll spins on classic genres, from the fresh noir of their first film, “Blood Simple,†to the intense newfangled western of “No Country for Old Men†and the goofy, musical Depression-era “O Brother, Where Art Thou?†The Coen brothers’ love of movies finally takes center stage in “Hail, Caesar!†Set in early-1950s Hollywood, the comedy follows a fixer at the fictional Capitol Studios (Josh Brolin) who tries to retrieve a kidnapped star (George Clooney). But the film, which opens Feb. 5, is driven by five wildly varied movies-within-the-movie that...

I had an amazing revelation today early AM. I went to sleep unusually early last night at around 8 P.M.. As often happens when I hit the sack early, I woke up in the middle of the night...like around 1 A.M.. Soooo...I did what I often do, I watched one of the many things recorded on my DVR until I got tired again and return to sleep. In this case, I watched the Coen Brothers comedy, "Burn After Reading," about the intelligence community. After watching the movie, I still wasn't quite tired enough to hit the sack again so I...

During TCA’s winter press tour, FX CEO John Langraf revealed that Ronald Reagan will figure into the second season of the network’s hit anthology series. “It covers something that was referenced in the first installment by Lou Solverson, Molly Solverson’s [Allison Tolman] father,” Langraf said. “It’s a big sprawling, in some ways, more comedic [season], though at times, a very serious show. It’s set in the late ’70s against the backdrop of Ronald Reagan’s first campaign for President of the United States. Reagan is a character in it.” After the panel, Landgraf confided to EW that Fargo will actually be...

When I was 9 or 10, I watched Raising Arizona on VHS and thought it was one of the weirdest and funniest things I had ever seen. A frequently jailed stickup artist with surprisingly florid diction (Nicolas Cage) and his barren police officer wife (Holly Hunter) kidnap a loudmouth furniture magnate's quintuplet and run into trouble with two escaped convicts and the Lone Biker of the Apocalypse. I didn't get it, really, but I didn't care: It was hilarious and strange, with amusingly quotable dialogue ("I'll be taking these Huggies and, uh, whatever cash ya got") and hummable music (the...

Well, your wait, if you were waiting, is over. The trailer for the Coen Brothers' TRUE GRIT has been released. Thoughts? It's a good lookin' trailer. However, that song instantly drove me insane. The whole time I was like, "When will this fade out?" Maybe something instrumental would have been better? I might be alone in this thought. Other than that, it's really my only complaint. It also reminds me of how bad ass and manly John Wayne was. Then again, so is Jeff Bridges, who from the looks of this trailer slides comfortably into the role of Rooster Cogburn....
