  • America is running low on chicken. Blame covid-19, a sandwich craze and huge appetite for wings

It’s not like we weren’t warned. The doomsayers predicted this months ago: “A MASSIVE CHICKEN WING SHORTAGE IS BREWING,” blared the headline of one trade publication in early February. But it turned out to be so much worse. Bloomberg News, on Thursday: “Fried-Chicken Craze Is Causing U.S. to Run Low on Poultry.” In other words, not just wings, but chicken in general. Or, as Bojangles put it in a recent tweet about their tenders: “we’re experiencing a system-wide shortage :( But they will be back soon!”

Pet jerky treats, mostly imported from China, are being linked to more than 1,000 deaths in dogs, more than 4,800 complaints about animal illness, and, for the first time, sickness in three people who ate the products, federal health officials said Friday, according to nbcnews.com. But Food and Drug Administration officials say they still can't identify a specific cause for the reported illnesses or deaths, despite seven years of tests and investigation.

Despite the U.S. Food and Drug AdministrationÂ’s repeated warnings, the latest just this October, about Made-in-China jerky treats suspected of causing thousands of illnesses and deaths of American dogs and cats since 2007, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) gave approval for four Chinese poultry processors to import into the United States, thereby lifting a ban set to protect Americans against deadly avian influenza breakouts. The contaminated chicken jerky were recalled and blamed for 2,500 animal illnesses and more than 500 dogsÂ’ deaths. The FDA later found falsified documents, mislabels, and import shortcuts. Samantha Olson reports for Medical Daily,...

Authorities in eastern China have banned live poultry sales after an increase in the number of people infected with the H7N9 strain of bird flu, state media reported Tuesday, with the busy Chinese New Year travel period already under way. So far this year, H7N9 has killed 19 people in China and infected 96, the official Xinhua News Agency said, citing the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. …
  • Most chicken sold in stores is contaminated, Consumer Reports says

A report released Thursday indicates that just about all chicken sold in U.S. stores contains harmful bacteria, and nearly half are tainted with a so-called superbug that's resistant to antibiotics. The Consumer Reports study, its most comprehensive to date on poultry, tested raw chicken breasts purchased at retail outlets nationwide for six bacteria, then checked for antibiotic resistance. The results showed nearly half of the samples were contaminated with at least one bacterium resistant to three or more classes of antibiotics, what's known as a superbug. Slightly more than 10 percent were tainted with two superbugs. That finding is cause...
  • Now That Obama Is Allowing Chicken From China, What Will That Do To The Chicken Industry?

Do you know what is in your chicken nuggets? Thanks to Barack Obama, that is going to be a more important question than ever. At the end of August, the Obama administration quietly decided to start allowing Chinese poultry processors to ship processed chicken into the United States. For now, the meat must originate either in the United States or in another country where the poultry population has been certified to be safe. What that means is that chickens from the United States will be shipped all the way over to China, processed in plants over there, and then shipped...

As WCBS 880’s Jim Smith reported Sunday, Schumer said first, the U.S. Department of Agriculture only allowed chickens that had been processed in China to be sold in the U.S. Now, he said the USDA plans to green-light poultry raised and slaughtered in China.
  • Are We Crazy? USDA To Label Chinese-Processed Chicken As ‘Made In America’

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently announced that four Chinese poultry processors have permission to begin shipping meat to the U.S. The nightmare for U.S. consumers? The Chinese-processed chicken will be labeled as ‘made in America!’ Even though the Chinese poultry processors are only allowed to ship cooked meat from U.S.-raised chickens, many in the United States are alarmed that our leaders would allow such a deal to go down in the first place. After all, China is notorious for its food safety problems. Concerns among the public are warranted when you consider that the CDC estimates 325,000 Americans...

U.S. officials have given the thumbs-up to four Chinese poultry plants, paving the way for the country to send processed chicken to American markets, according to audit reports obtained by POLITICO. The audit reports expected to be made public Friday show that the Chinese processing plants passed U.S. Department of Agriculture inspections performed in March and the positive results make it likely the foreign producers soon will become eligible to export to the U.S According to the audit, at first, China will only be able to process chicken that has been slaughtered in the U.S. or other certified countries.
