Access to gender-affirming care for transgender youth will be dramatically restricted by the Trump administration under new proposals by the Department of Health and Human Services. NPR has obtained the draft text of a proposed rule that would prohibit federal Medicaid reimbursement for medical care provided to transgender patients younger than age 18. It also prohibits reimbursement through the Children's Health Insurance Program or CHIP for patients under age 19.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — Looking back on her five-decade career in public service, Hillary Rodham Clinton can count numerous accomplishments and successes from her tenure as U.S. secretary of state, first lady, U.S. senator and other roles as a leader and advocate. But what would she do differently? Without hesitation, she said it would be the 2016 U.S. presidential election. “Obviously, I’d win,” Clinton declared to a packed house in Brown’s Pizzitola Sports Center during the University’s 104th Stephen A. Ogden Jr. ’60 Memorial Lecture on International Affairs on Thursday, Oct. 30. “I should caveat that — I’d win...

Americans all over the country celebrated the news that the national nightmare that had lasted for generations was finally over, as the United States Supreme Court outlawed candy corn. In a landmark 8-1 ruling, the nation's highest court almost unanimously declared the manufacture, sale, possession, purchase, and consumption of the substance known as "candy corn" to be illegal and unconstitutional. "No nation can, in good faith, allow this horror to continue," said Justice Clarence Thomas, who penned the majority opinion. "The United States was founded upon a certain standard of principles to promote common decency and adherence to the most...

More than half of all illegal-immigrant households have at least one U.S.-born child through whom they can receive aid. Nearly 2.7 million households have at least one illegal head and one child, and more than 5.3 million U.S.-born children of illegal aliens hold Social Security numbers. The total estimated cost to American taxpayers of providing SNAP benefits to the children of illegal aliens is almost $5.8 billion. According to the Center for Immigration Studies, data from the 2022 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) indicates that 54 percent of households headed by immigrants—including naturalized citizens, legal residents, and illegal...

A former CBS News producer accused the network of “race-based layoffs” after corporate parent Paramount Skydance introduced sweeping cuts, claiming in a viral TikTok that every producer laid off from his team was a person of color while white colleagues were reassigned. Trey Sherman, who is black, served as an associate producer for “CBS Evening News+,” a streaming extension of the network’s flagship broadcast that was among the programs shuttered during the layoffs. He also worked for CBS’s Race and Culture Unit, which was dissolved in the same round of cuts that affected about 100 staffers across the division.

Ninety-five Theses, a work of 95 one- or two-sentence propositions for debate, written in Latin by Martin Luther and concerned with the question of indulgences. According to tradition, Luther posted the theses on the door of the Schlosskirche (Castle Church) in Wittenberg on October 31, 1517 (see Researcher’s Note). Originally intended to promote academic discussion, Luther’s theses became a manifesto that turned a protest about a German indulgence scandal into the greatest crisis in the history of Western Christianity. Ultimately, Luther and his followers were excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church. The writing (and supposed posting) of the theses came...

YouTube TV customers watched ESPN go dark Thursday night as talks between the Google-owned platform and sports network broke down, leading the channel — along with other Disney-operated channels — to disappear from the platform. A deal between the two sides could not be reached, and by late Thursday night, the stations, which include ABC, FX, Disney Jr. and National Geographic, along with ESPN channels, went dark for more than 10 million YouTube TV customers, escalating the prolonged back-and-forth between the two sides. The 70-year-old, who could be seen clutching her phone and a brown paper bag, emerged hours before she appeared on the air Friday morning — making no mention of her own news as she opened the show. This initiative delivers a strong lesson in cleanliness. A 'Return Gift' Speaking with NDTV, Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited's (BSWML) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Karigowda said, "We have around 5,000 autos in Bengaluru that go to households for collection of dry and wet waste. Four Republican senators voted with Democrats on Thursday to approve a bipartisan resolution to repeal President Trump’s global tariffs, including steeper rates on long-time allies such as the European Union, Japan and South Korea. Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.), the GOP sponsor of the resolution, and Sens. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) voted for it. The same proposal failed in the Senate in late April on a 50-49 vote after Vice President Vance cast the tiebreaking vote to defeat it. Critically, McConnell and Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (R.I.), who voted Thursday for the resolution, missed the...
