Charlie Weis is out as Notre Dame head football coach, a source close to the program told the Daily News. AD Jack Swarbrick has decided to make a change after Weis finished the season with a 6-6 record and four straight losses to Navy, Pitt, Connecticut and Stanford. Weis coached Notre Dame for five years and leaves with a 35-27 record. He has told friends in South Bend he has at least six offers from NFL teams to become their offensive coordinator. On yet another surreally beautiful November day in South Bend, the Notre Dame sliding Irish completed the hard-to-believe scene by falling to yet another inferior opponent at home, losing to Connecticut by the final score of 33-30. For although Senior Day had the senior captains coming out of the tunnel with arms interlocked with Charlie Weis' to show their unwavering support for their embattled coach, this embarrassing performance most certainly buried Charlie, and assured he would be exiting the campus with them, if not before. Still, if Saturday's loss meant Charlie would no longer be roaming the sidelines, it also...

  • Three Envelopes: Ty Willingham's Secret Letter To Charlie Weis (Great Read!)

When Notre Dame Head Football Coach Charlie Weis showed up for his first day on his new job under the Golden Dome, there was a short letter waiting for him in the middle of his desk. It was from Charlie's predecessor, Ty Willingham. The letter read as follows: Dear Coach Weis, Congratulations on being named as Notre Dame's football coach. It is truly an honor and a privilege to represent this University and coach these outstanding young men. You have a wealth of experience that has prepared you for the challenges you will face, but I suspect that you may...

Certainly, Notre Dame's decisive 49-21 Hawaiian Bowl victory over the host Hawaii Warriors accomplished volumes just on the Fightin' Irish football surface. Playing on the eve of the holiest day save Easter, the Domers not only silenced their critics and exorcised the demons of past bowl games, putting an end to their dubious NCAA record of nine consecutive bowl losses (a fact ESPN unfailingly reminded its viewers over a hundred times a day in the weeks leading up to the contest), but honored Her namesake and payed homage to Her Son's sacred day in the process. Noble deeds indeed ......

In you Lord, I trust, do not let me be disgraced; do not let my enemies laugh at me. –Psalm 24:2, from today's Entrance Antiphon There was much laughter in Troy-ville yesterday, and all at Notre Dame's expense, as the Southern California Trojans trounced the smile-less Irish 38-3. Indeed, the merciless hosts, led by happy head coach Pete Carroll, whom the cameras caught emitting belly-laughs at his once-proud opponent's expense as early as the second quarter, took no prisoners and forced the Notre Dame fans into the exiled spirit of Advent (whether they intended to attend Mass or not) and...

He knows you're coming, and at this point the inevitable has happened. He's stuck with you. For two days, flying thousands of miles in a small private plane with all the comfort of a four-door sedan. The sportswriter vs. Charlie Weis. He'd rather take a sledgehammer to the knees than endure this torture. "I know why you're here," he says. The natural response: Why? "To see if I'm human," he replies. Here he is, everyone. Charlie Weis: the most hated man in college sports. From his arrogance to his controversial hiring at Notre Dame, to a contract extension seven games...

Just a few short games ago, Notre Dame was on the receiving end of one woodshed beating after another when it went up against Top 20 opponents. Now, just 14 games into the career of head coach Charlie Weis – less than the length of a single NFL season – the Irish are the ones dragging their opponents past the hay barn and the henhouse and making no effort to muffle the screams of their helpless victims. After an inauspicious start last weekend – a 14-10 win at Georgia Tech – Notre Dame exploded in a 41-17 win at home...

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- The mother of a boy granted a dying wish to call a football play for Notre Dame died eight months after her son. Cathy Mazurkiewicz died Wednesday at 46 at her parents' home in Bodfish, Calif., of melanoma, said her daughter, Katrin Seymour. Mazurkiewicz' son, Montana, 10, died of inoperable brain cancer. "Me and my sister were with her," Seymour said. "She took a few soft breaths, gave a smile, then she was gone." Mazurkiewicz, the mother of six children, knew her health was failing when her son died but kept it quiet. "When she...

Many teams might be stressing in their quest for a third consecutive national title but not laid-back Southern California LOS ANGELES — Inside the lobby of Heritage Hall, under glass, sits the collection of national championship trophies won by all of the teams in the glorious past of the University of Southern California. Shining and majestic, they can almost take your breath away. Outside in front of the building, coach Pete Carroll and quarterback Matt Leinart might be on the verge of running out of breath from all the talking they are doing. On the right side of the steps,...

Believe the hype. Moreover, cherish it. Anyone not convinced of Notre Dame's quality, along with anyone convinced of USC's superiority, should still relish the off-the-charts buzz surrounding this game. Why is Trojans-Irish receiving through-the-roof publicity? If you love and care about college football, you shouldn't have to ask. Let's remember: lost amidst the Gerry Faust Error, Lou Holtz's total dominance of Troy, and the sad sagas of Paul "I Can't" Hackett and Ty Willingham, this is college football's greatest intersectional rivalry. SC-Notre Dame has carried a deeply-rooted place in the histories of these two decorated football schools. The rivalry blossomed...

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Charlie Weis doesn't usually let anyone else call plays on offense. He made an exception for 10-year-old Montana Mazurkiewicz. The Notre Dame coach met last week with Montana, who had been told by doctors weeks earlier that there was nothing more they could do to stop the spread of his inoperable brain tumor. "He was a big Notre Dame fan in general, but football especially," said his mother, Cathy Mazurkiewicz. Weis showed up at the Mazurkiewicz home in Mishawaka, just east of South Bend, and talked with Montana about his tumor and about Weis' 10-year-old daughter,...
