Charlie Weis is the balls

Just a few short games ago, Notre Dame was on the receiving end of one woodshed beating after another when it went up against Top 20 opponents.

Now, just 14 games into the career of head coach Charlie Weis – less than the length of a single NFL season – the Irish are the ones dragging their opponents past the hay barn and the henhouse and making no effort to muffle the screams of their helpless victims.

After an inauspicious start last weekend – a 14-10 win at Georgia Tech – Notre Dame exploded in a 41-17 win at home against No. 19 Penn State. The Irish led 41-3 in the fourth quarter before giving up two late TDs.

What do the “pundits” think of Charlie Weis’ impending move to Notre Dame?

“Weis might be the last guy who still thinks (Notre Dame) is a glamour gig,” said Mike Lupica on ESPN’s The Sports Reporters Sunday morning.

Sports Reporters panelist Jason Whitlock was more blunt: “I don’t know who’s dumber. Weis or Notre Dame.”

Most impressive thing about Weis was his ability to recruit key players to ND three years before he was offered the job.

I am a rabid Pats fan and Charlie is a great guy. He could have been a head coach after being the offensive co-ordinator for the Pats when they won 3 super bowls, but he didn't want to coach some scrub NFL team. He is an ND grad and is fulfilling a life dream.

Remember that Bill Belichek, one of the most successful head coaches in NFL history, is primarily a defensive guy. Charlie had control of the Pats offense and got the most out of it. Sure, he had Tom Brady, but not much to speak off in terms of wide recievers or running backs during most of his time with New England.

As an ND fan, I am happy for him and for ND...

I'm a Notre Dame fan (along with PSU), and I'm quite impressed with Charlie Weis, but I'm a little confused how this writer could consider this an accurate description of the Georgia Tech game.

It seems accurate to me.

...I believe this statement applies to the overall results under Weis so far in his short career as the ND coach. 30 point losses were far to frequent and Weis, hopefully, has turned that around.

He is a good coach, maybe even elite.

Point is, Willingham signed these guys, nursed them, gave them playing time.

I'm not a fan of ND, but Quinn, Samardja(?), and Zbikowski are tremendous college players. Weis was dealt a decent hand.

Agreed, Gunflint. The other half of the battle is how you play the cards. In winning three superbowls, Weiss did not have a single first round draft pick WR or a running game (first 2; got Corey Dillon for the third). He plays the cards he is dealt very well....
Might be time for a trip back to South Bend. Haven't been there since the mid-80's when a friend went to grad school there.... Great experience...
