Sharon Smith has to plunge her toilet to get it to flush. On rainy days, wastewater spills into her yard from nearby drainage ditches. Twice in the last year her house has flooded, leaving behind the sickening smell of sewage, she said. Her carpets are ruined, the floorboards are buckling, the bathroom wall is pulling away from the tub, she said. In the laundry room, the worst-hit part of the house, the smell of mold lingers. “I want to move, because this flooding is ridiculous,” said Smith, 59. For decades, residents of Centreville, a nearly all-Black town of 5,000 in...

A PE teacher falsely accused of molesting a 12-year-old schoolgirl has spoken of his pain at telling his children he was going to be arrested. Sean Lanigan was pulled out of a class in Fairfax, Virginia, and told he was going to be arrested for allegedly carrying out the offences. In reality his 'crimes' had been invented and the schoolgirl bore a grudge against him. Despite being cleared of all the offences, the teacher’s $125,000 legal fees still haven’t been repaid by the state and he is struggling to get his life back. The young girl claimed that the teacher...

CENTREVILLE — Technical Sgt. Willie F. Overfelt never lived to walk on U.S. soil after April 7, 1945. The young World War II soldier, a member of the Army’s 63rd Infantry Division, died in battle in Germany that day. Now, nearly 60 years after his death, visitors to the Camp Van Dorn Museum of Centreville will see Overfelt’s name engraved on a memorial plaque — along with his battle helmet, which was found by a German soldier and returned. Sgt. Overfelt, along with the tens of thousands of fellow soldiers from the “Blood and Fire” 63rd Infantry and the 99th...

OKLAHOMA CITY - The possibility that a video exists showing the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building led to a search of a home in Virginia, but the man whose residence was searched said no such video was found. No such video has ever been seen publicly and it is not clear whether one exists. Depending on what was on such a video, it could conceivably be used as evidence in bombing conspirator Terry Nichols' trial on state murder charges, set to begin March 1. The search of John Culbertson's home in Centreville, Va., took place Friday. The...

The New York Times was the nation's "newspaper of record," the "Good Gray Lady of 43rd Street," the gold standard by which all other newspapers were to be measured. So we were taught at the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia. And so we believed. For it was true. In the comprehensiveness of its coverage, accuracy of its reporting, the precision of language, spelling, grammar, the Times was the best. No paper came close. Its reporters, writers and editors were a constant presence at Columbia, conducting classes, lecturing us on how to report, write, edit, criticize, editorialize. We were a...

Proving Saddam's Death Could Take Weeks By MATT KELLEY .c The Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) - For the U.S. military in Iraq, determining whether Saddam Hussein is dead or alive has taken a back seat to more pressing matters such as securing Baghdad and searching for weapons of mass destruction. White House chief of staff Andrew Card said this week he believes Saddam is dead. If Card is right, what's left of the deposed Iraqi leader's body is probably buried in tons of rubble in one of two huge bomb craters in the Iraqi capital. U.S. military teams have investigated...
