CENTREVILLE - A proposal to name a new elementary school after Secretary of State Colin Powell has sparked a political debate in Fairfax County.
The debate has raged since a School Board meeting last month at which residents were asked to list their top three choices for the name of the new school in Centreville. Colin L. Powell Elementary School came out on top, with nearly twice as many votes as runners-up Arrowhead and Arrowhead Park.

"Just because he's a Republican does not mean he's bad," said Ronald Hobson, who used to work in the Clinton administration and is a father of three.Very gracious words by Ronald Hobson; I can't think of anyone in the 'Toon Administration I could say the same about.

"Just give us a nice, benign, feel-good name," the mother of two told the School Board last week. "Don't use our school name as a vehicle to further any other agenda."sounds like a mom with an agenda to me.

Just give us a nice, benign, feel-good name," the mother of two told the School Board Her first pick was "Rachel Corrie Martyr of Palestine Elementary," but apparently that didn't go over too well.

Oops, thats what I meant to put that instead of a repeat of "Dispatch" in the parentheses. Wrong date is another boo-boo. I better not go to work today, I'll probably screw everything up.
I wish the Admin Moderator would correct these errors.

"If it were up to her," she said, referring to her third-grader, "she'd probably name it the Britney Spears School." A third-grade Britney wannabe? For shame.

Why are these people taking such childish potshots? Now, if you want sarcasm and some very deep barbs, we can certainly do better than this! Even Gore Vidal has become senile in his virulent hatred of the right. (I suspected he had the beginnings of dementia when he wrote Caligula, but who knew, really??

Once upon a time honoring a great statesman and public servant would not have caused any sort of "controversy" at all.
This is, to me, a symptom of the fact that this nation has never been so divided at any time since the Civil War, as it is now.

There was a school named *shudder and retch* Wm. J. Clinton Elementary. I don't recall any "controversy" in the article I read about that...
To: Illbay
You are right about the division in our society. The hate from the left is white hot.
You'd think these folks would be proud to have their school named after an American leader as distinguished as (though I have some personal disagreements with him) Colin Powell. Frankly, his name belongs on a High School (and not just an Elementary School) anyway.
