Three months ago, CAB Payments stumbled when it went public on the London Stock Exchange, its shares falling nearly 10% on their first day of trading on a market that has been starved recently of new listings. The mood went from bad to worse Tuesday, however, when the fintech firm’s shares crashed nearly 74% after it issued a stark warning on revenues. The stock has now lost 82% of its value since listing. After a quick trip in a San Francisco taxi, the passenger handed a credit card to the driver to swipe, then hopped out of the cab. Soon, a gargantuan charge — thousands of dollars — appeared on the passenger’s credit card bill for the ride. Despite months of pleading, the bank insisted the passenger owed the money and only relented after being contacted by a reporter. Wait, you’ve heard this story before, right? The Chronicle’s article about Margarita Bekker’s $9,875 bill for an 11-minute Yellow Cab ride went viral earlier this year. Three people who read that story contacted The...

There was a time in my life twenty years ago when I was driving a cab for a living. It was a cowboy's life, a gambler's life, a life for someone who wanted no boss, constant movement and the thrill of a dice roll every time a new passenger got into the cab. What I didn't count on when I took the job was that it was also a ministry. Because I drove the night shift, my cab became a rolling confessional. Passengers would climb in, sit behind me in total anonymity and tell me of their lives. We were...

Homes aren’t the only places protected by self-defense laws. In many states, gun owners are justified in defending themselves in their businesses or in their vehicles. For cab drivers, their car is a little bit of both. One United Cabs driver in New Orleans protected himself and his property by shooting a would-be robber in the face. According to an updated report, a 41-year-old cab driver was dispatched to pick up a fare late in the evening on Oct. 19. Upon arrival the fare, a young man between the ages of 16 and 18, entered the cab and asked to...
