  • VIDEO: FBI Enlists Bullwinkle for PSA

VIDEOOkay, technically it's the Seattle Mariner's Moose Mascot but to all appearances he is Bullwinkle. And, bizarrely, the FBI enlisted Bullwinkle for a PSA on flying drones in restricted areas. Perhaps the FBI could also enlist Bullwinkle to appear before Congress. Bullwinkle would certainly be more forthcoming in answering question than typical stonewalling FBI officials whose standard answer is "I can't comment about an ongoing investigation." We should be hearing a lot of that stonewalling excuse when FBI Director Christopher Wray appears before Congress on July 12. Better to have Bullwinkle provide the answers because he is sure to be...
  • 'Brown blob' found in Yukon is a well-preserved Ice Age squirrel

Yukon paleontologists have this week unveiled another unusual find from the goldfields near Dawson City: a mummified Arctic ground squirrel from the Ice Age, curled up in a ball as though it died while hibernating. It was found a few years ago, but it's being shown off now because the government is preparing the dead rodent for display at the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre in Whitehorse, expected to reopen later this spring after a redesign. The animal was actually found in 2018, by a placer miner working at Hester Creek near Dawson City, Yukon. Miners are routinely finding Ice Age...

Every family has stories and traditions that are handed down from generation to generation. For the Engers, many of those stories revolve around "Lester the Moose" and his long, strange journey back into their possession. This tale of moose and men began in 1909 when Melvin Enger hopped on a train with nothing but his rifle and a backpack to go moose hunting up north.

The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show featured a fearless flying squirrel and his slow-witted moose sidekick. They did battle with two scheming but incompetent Soviet spies named Boris and Natasha. The cartoon is an American classic, beloved for a wry sense of humor that appeals to kids and their parents. It originally aired from 1959 until 1964, but has been in syndication ever since, most recently on the Cartoon Network and Boomerang. June Foray was the voice behind Rocky the Squirrel, and the evil Natasha. Now 95, she's receiving the prestigious Governor's Award Sunday at the Creative Arts Emmys. Foray is...

Mark Sapwell believes he has discovered an 'archaic version' of social networking site Facebook. Mark Sapwell, who is a PhD archaeology student at St John's College, believes he has discovered an "archaic version" of the social networking site, where users share thoughts and emotions and give stamps of approval to other contributions -- similar to the Facebook "like". Images of animals and events were drawn on the rock faces in Russian and Northern Sweden to communicate with distant tribes and descendants during the Bronze Age. They form a timeline preserved in stone encompassing thousands of years. Mr Sapwell said: "Like...

AUTHOR Eric C Bartholomew has photographed lots of animals – elephants, tigers, wild boar – but none were as tricky to capture as Thanet's albino squirrel. The 67-year-old scribbler, of St Lawrence Chase, Ramsgate, spotted the white wonder in a park close to Ramsgate's Royal Esplanade on Monday, April 16. Wildlife experts estimate that the odds of a pure white squirrel being born are one in 100,000. Mr Bartholomew, a safari lover, chased the rare rodent around the park for 20 minutes before he got his shot at about 7am. He said: "I was in the right place at the...

They are marauding gangs of troublemakers who set fire to cars, cut electrical wires and cause power outages, evading capture by scaling walls and climbing trees. But while the Queens co-op residents being terrorized by the daredevil vandals say they know exactly who their tormentors are, they insist that they’re helpless in stopping the crime wave — because the suspects are sex-happy squirrels. “It’s like Occupy Wall Street here,” lamented Bob Friedrich, president of the under-siege co-op at Glen Oaks Village. “It’s gotten worse in the past six months. We’re getting calls that they are in people’s apartments.”

Alex Anderson, 90, the artist who created the cartoon characters Rocky and Bullwinkle, the flying squirrel and hapless moose who were TV fixtures in the early 1960s, died Oct. 22 at a nursing facility in Carmel, Calif. His wife said he had Alzheimer's disease. Mr. Anderson, who grew up in a cartooning family in California, was also the creator of Crusader Rabbit, which became television's first animated cartoon series in 1949. He spent much of his career in advertising, and his role in creating Rocky and Bullwinkle was overlooked with time. He fought a long legal battle late in life...

Why is it that some people insist on being so unique they disrespect good, law-abiding creatures, such as a tree (or Bullwinkle, I'm really not friggin' sure what's going on here). The only thing I do know is that I'm locking my doors right now...well...as just soon as I stop typing and post this damned nonsense. "Hey. Honey? Where's the chainsaw?"

Most cowboys go to great lengths to keep from losing their rope. And yet that same cowboy might rope a freight train, a four-wheeler or a polar bear without a second thought. That thought, of course is, 'How do I get my rope back?' Randy and Roy were makin' a final circle on a big ranch north of the Anaconda Mountains. They were down to tracking singles. One set of tracks lead them up a little canyon. The snow was a foot deep and the footprints were well-defined punctures in the snow, not the foot draggin' bovine kind. It didn't...

BEVERLY HILLS, California - Chris Hayward, an Emmy-winning television writer who helped develop the bumbling animated Canadian Mountie Dudley Do-Right and other offbeat characters for the Rocky and Bullwinkle TV show, has died. He was 81. Hayward died of cancer Nov. 20 at this Beverly Hills home, his wife, Linda, told the Los Angeles Times in Sunday editions. Hayward contributed satire, wordplay and puns for "Rocky and His Friends," a witty cartoon that built a large adult following. State wildlife biologists are hoping an aggressive moose hunt this season will help cut in half the number of animals in the Northeast Kingdom where the population has far exceeded the ability of the land to provide for them and moose conflicts with people are increasing, officials say. The season is off to a good start. After the first two days, the number of animals reported killed statewide exceeded the number taken during the same period last year by about 40 percent. "The hunters seem pretty happy about that," said Forrest Hammond, a wildlife biologist with the Vermont Department of...

MILAN, N.H. - It was a tempting green hedgerow for the hungry young moose. Somehow, a child's swingset got in the way. The moose, who was trying to snack on a backyard hedge Thursday, got tangled in the swingset's chains. The homeowner called police for help. Lt. Jean LeBlanc decided he needed backup, so he called Don Valliere, maintenance man for the Berlin Police, and asked him to bring a pair of bolt cutters. It was up to Valliere, 54, to free the moose. Photos snapped by LeBlanc show Valliere balanced on a beam of the swingset, snipping the chains...

SEATTLE - This is a story about a mother, a baby in dire need and how the two came together. It didn't matter that they didn't come from the same place, or look at all alike -- they weren't even the same species! But instinct took over when the need was greatest. Debby Cantlon of Seattle explains: "He doesn't know he's a squirrel; he thinks he's a dog." She's talking about Finegan, the squirrel. He could be excused for thinking he's a dog, that's how he's being raised. Rescued at just a few days old, Finegan had fallen from a...

Standing six feet at the shoulder, weighing up to 1,000 pounds, with massive antlers more than five feet across, moose tower over automobiles and have no fear of them. AP Photo Increasingly the undisputed giants of the northern forest are tangling with traffic as they expand south. Massachusetts motorists hit 52 moose last year, a more than sixfold increase in four years. For decades road officials have relied on warning signs and publicity campaigns...
