PHOENIX (CBS5) - Authorities in Phoenix are asking for immediate action after they found that hundreds of protective vests worn by Valley cops may not stop bullets. Phoenix Police officer Anthony Daley, 30, was seriously injured when a bullet pierced through the bottom edge of his ballistic vest in November. A similar vest was tested Thursday and the results released today.

A liquid armour has been shown to stop bullets in tests carried out by UK scientists at BAE systems in Bristol. The researchers have combined this "shear-thickening" liquid with Kevlar to create a new bullet-proof material. The company is keeping the chemical formula of the liquid a secret, but it works by absorbing the force of the bullet strike and responding to it by becoming much thicker and more sticky. The BAE scientists describe it as "bullet-proof custard". "It's very similar to custard in the sense that the molecules lock together when it's struck," explained Stewart Penny, business development manager...

A new type of carbon fibre, developed at the University of Cambridge, could be woven into super-strong body armour for the military and law enforcement. The researchers say their material is already several times stronger, tougher and stiffer than fibres currently used to make protective armour. The lightweight fibre, made up of millions of tiny carbon nanotubes, is starting to reveal exciting properties. Carbon nanotubes are hollow cylinders of carbon just one atom thick. The new material was developed by a group at the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy at Cambridge. It has emerged from efforts to create the...

Troy Hurtubise is facing eviction after his Trojan invention flopped.Troy Hurtubise really put everything he had into his bulletproof combat suit. He spent two years and tens of thousands of dollars developing the Trojan, hoping to sell it to the Canadian or American armed forces, or to another friendly government. Now he's broke. Last month, he promised the Trojan would give soldiers in the field affordable, lightweight protection from bullets and bombs alike. He had worked all kinds of extras into the body armour: a ventilation system and multiple lights in the helmet, pepper spray that could shoot from the...
