Critics of conservative host Rush Limbaugh are making a push to get him taken off Armed Forces Radio. A petition on the White House's website requests that Limbaugh's show no longer be aired on the armed forces network, which reaches U.S. troops overseas. As of 7:30 tonight, more than 10,500 people had signed the petition, which was posted to the site Sunday. Limbaugh last week attacked Georgetown University law student Sandra Fluke after she testified before Congress in favor of a requirement backed by the Obama administration to require health insurance companies to provide contraception coverage. Limbaugh has since apologized.

In a blog to the Huffington Post, former NATO Supreme Commander Wesley Clark called for Congress to immediately take steps to remove conservative radio personality Rush Limbaugh from Armed Forces Radio. Last week, Rush Limbaugh labeled any American soldier who supports an end to the war in Iraq as "phony," noted Clark. "We challenged Limbaugh through an email campaign to invite VoteVets.org's Jon Soltz to his show and repeat these same insults to an Iraq war veteran's face. Over 10,000 people responded and emailed Rush -- but to our disappointment, he has refused to respond to our request. "It's time...

Handing liberal opponents a sudden victory in their longtime battle over Armed Forces Radio content, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity may soon be removed from broadcast outlets serving American soldiers stationed around the world. With last year's addition of liberal talk shows to the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service lineup, how could this happen now? Wasn't the previous flap over such programming resolved at that point? In this new scenario, ALL political talk shows will be nearly eliminated, including those hosted by liberals Ed Schultz and Al Franken. If Hannity and Limbaugh aren't being singled out for quasi- cancellation,...

Repeating unsubstantiated conspiracy theories often enough may win over some outside their tiny circle, liberal talk radio proponents are learning. Ed Schultz thought he had a deal to broadcast to U.S. soldiers, but the Pentagon now says otherwise. For more than two days, fans of Fargo-based lib talker Ed Schultz have celebrated their would-be "victory" over the military-industrial complex that supposedly conspired to keep his program off of Armed Forces Radio. From our 18 October report: Possibly in response to a Democrat-led push for greater ideological programming "balance" on global military broadcasts, the Ed Schultz show was, in theory at least,...

For two publicity-craving liberal talk hosts looking to milk recent circumstances, results are so far mixed. Ed Schultz thought he had a deal to broadcast to U.S. soldiers, but the Pentagon now says otherwise. In part one here, Fargo, North Dakota-based Ed Schultz is reaping a mini-whirlwind of press attention, for making unsubstantiated claims against Armed Forces Radio. Possibly in response to a Democrat-led push for greater ideological programming "balance" on global military broadcasts, the Ed Schultz show was, in theory at least, to begin Monday. Instead, his nationally syndicated program was halted before even a single airing. Was it ever...

"Do the right thing." These were Secretary of State Colin Powell's words of advice to the Wake Forest University class of 2004 in his May commencement address. Then Powell issued an incontrovertible condemnation of the actions of U.S. soldiers' abuse of Iraqi prisoners: "Our nation is now going through a period of deep disappointment, a period of deep pain over some of our soldiers not doing the right thing at a place called Abu Ghraib. All Americans deplored what happened there."

David Brock, the former self-described "right-wing hit man" turned "progressive" activist, is escalating his campaign against conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh. Brock runs a new organization called Media Matters for America, which, according to Brock, was created to fight "conservative misinformation" in the media (see "David Brock is Buzzing Again," NR, June 14, 2004). Earlier this month, Brock and Media Matters produced a television commercial attacking Limbaugh...

NEW YORK (AP) -- Major league baseball teams will pay tribute to the U.S. armed forces and the nation by having "God Bless America" sung during the seventh-inning stretch of all home openers. While the song had been part of all games since the Sept. 11 attacks, it will be sung this season only at the home openers, Sunday games and holidays, the commissioner's office said Friday. Baseball also announced an agreement with Armed Forces Radio and Television Service to carry eight to 10 games each week during the season, starting with Sunday night's opener between Texas and Anaheim.
