    PHOENIX (AP) -- Four members of Congress have asked the Justice Department to conduct a civil rights investigation into immigration and crime sweeps conducted by an Arizona sheriff's office. Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Friday that his deputies didn't use racial profiling during raids that began last year in the Phoenix area. About half of the arrests from the sweeps were illegal immigrants.

    Inmate rights lawyers filed a legal motion Monday to cap the population in the California prison system. The motion was filed in a pending class-action lawsuit in Sacramento, already settled on behalf of the plaintiffs, to improve mental health care in the prison system. A second motion was expected to be filed later in the day in San Francisco in the class-action case that regulates overall health care in the system.
