Washington, DC - - Lyft just made a splashy hire as it focuses on working more closely with governments. Anthony Foxx, former President Obama's secretary of the Department of Transportation from 2013-2017, will serve as Lyft's chief policy officer and advisor to its co-founders. Foxx's move speaks to the increasingly central role tech companies play in transportation. He is the first former transportation secretary to join a Silicon Valley startup. Foxx joined Lyft because he is drawn to the company's mission and values, he said in a statement Tuesday.

(CNSNews.com) - Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx told a crowd in North Carolina Tuesday that “only 49% of low-income neighborhoods have sidewalks” while more affluent areas have near 90%. In order to have a society where “everyone has a shot at the American Dream, than it’s imperative that we acknowledge these challenges.” Foxx made the comments to the Charlotte Rotary Club where he discussed the ways that infrastructure should connect people to opportunity. During his speech, Foxx referenced a map of Atlanta that showed areas of pedestrian and bicycle accidents. “The grey areas represent communities of concentrated poverty. This is representative...

WASHINGTON -- Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said Monday that Congress needs the equivalent of basketball player LeBron James to help them pass a long-term extension of a federal fund that pays for the nation’s transportation system. The Highway Trust Fund is set to run out at the end of this month, and Congress has yet to set a vote in either chamber on legislation that would extend the expiration and allow the Department of Transportation to distribute what little funds it has left to states. “We have a clock that is running out. We’ve got 20 days left, and gosh,...

Suppose, for some reason the FBI is getting back at or putting a shot across the bow of the DNC/Obama for some reason? Three major Democrats, busted, in one day. Just wondering what you guys think about this and the propensity for this to explode to various other politicians (Anthony Foxx)?

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Less than six months on the job, the mayor of Charlotte was arrested Wednesday and accused of accepting more than $48,000 in bribes from undercover FBI agents posing as businessmen who wanted to do work with North Carolina's largest city. Mayor Patrick Cannon, a 47-year-old Democrat who rose from the city's public housing projects to become a successful businessman and politician, faces federal theft and bribery charges. Cannon solicited and accepted more than $48,000 in cash, airline tickets, a hotel room and the use of a luxury apartment as bribes, according to a criminal complaint. If...

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The mayor of North Carolina's largest city has been arrested on public corruption charges. U.S. Attorney Anne Tompkins said Wednesday that Charlotte Mayor Patrick Cannon is facing theft and bribery charges. Tompkins says Cannon solicited and accepted bribes from undercover FBI agents posing as real estate developers who wanted to do business in Charlotte. According to the criminal complaint, Cannon is accused of accepting bribes from the agents on five separate occasions. On the most recent occasion, on February 21,2014, Cannon allegedly accepted $20,000 in cash in the mayor's office. He's also accused of accepting from the...

SAN ANTONIO — A proposed high speed rail between San Antonio and Monterrey is in the works. One lawmaker says it would revolutionize trade and travel between the U.S. and Mexico and pump more tourism dollars into the local economy. On Thursday, Representative Henry Cuellar will meet with the Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx along with state and Mexican officials to discuss the proposed rail system. Instead of paying for a round-trip airline ticket to Monterrey from San Antonio — which can cost at least $400 — Cuellar said a commuter could hop on a high-speed train and travel between...

Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx, who President Barack Obama tapped Tuesday to be the next transportation secretary, just declared Thursday "A Day of Reason" in his home city, and asked Charlotte's citizens to observe the day. May 2 is traditionally the National Day of Prayer, a government-designated religious event designed to encourage people to "turn to God in prayer and meditation." But Foxx argued in his proclamation May 2 was better served as A Day of Reason because "the application of reason, more than any other means, has proven to offer hope for human survival on Earth." Several current and former...

Foxx Tapped As Secretary Of Transportation The mayor of Charlotte, NC has been tapped as the next Secretary of Transportation according to numerous media outlets who have spoken with "unnamed sources." Anthony Foxx was the host of the Democratic National Convention last year and recently announced he would not be running for re-election in Charlotte. Foxx is a lawyer who worked briefly for a hybrid bus company while sitting on Charlotte council. He became Charlotte's mayor at the age of 38 in 2009. He does not appear to have any aviation experience. Among the other potential candidates for the post...

President Obama plans to nominate Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx to serve as transportation secretary, a White House official said Sunday. Foxx, who would succeed Ray LaHood, would be the first African American nominated to serve in the president’s second-term Cabinet. Obama, who has had several Latino, African American and female Cabinet members step down in recent months, has come under fire for not doing enough to ensure diversity among his top advisers. The White House official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the announcement had not been made, said, “As mayor of one of America’s most vibrant cities,...
  • Atheists Right at Home at Democrat Convention

Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx spoke yesterday at the Democratic National Convention, welcoming attendees to North Carolina’s largest city. Two hours later, the Charlotte Atheists and Agnostics, a local affiliate of American Atheists, held a convention protest, at which they reiterated their demand for absolute “separation of religion and government.” So what does that have to do with Foxx, Charlotte’s first Democrat mayor in 22 years? Well, back in May, Foxx proclaimed “A Day of Reason,” in a bow to the city’s atheists and agnostics. And he “commend(ed) its observance to all citizens.” Sounding very much like the speakers ranting against...

Voters ended more than two decades of Republican leadership in Charlotte Tuesday by electing Democrat Anthony Foxx the city's second African-American mayor and the youngest in memory. Foxx won Charlotte's closest mayoral race in years, taking just over 51 percent of the vote over Republican John Lassiter in unofficial totals. At a victory celebration, Foxx shared a long hug with a jubilant Harvey Gantt, the last Democratic and first African-American mayor. "It's been 22 years since we've had this moment," a hoarse Foxx told a cheering crowd at the Westin hotel. "The work of rebuilding our community starts very soon....

Raleigh, N.C. – John Lassiter has taken a 50-46 lead in Public Policy Polling’s final survey of the Charlotte Mayoral race, an outcome that is still within the poll’s margin of error. White undecideds moved in Lassiter’s direction over the final days, giving him a staggering 68-29 lead with that group. Foxx leads 86-12 with African Americans. Lassiter leads 51-40 with independents, continuing a double digit lead he’s shown with those voters in every poll of the race. He’s also winning 17% of the Democratic vote while Foxx is only getting 9% of Republicans to cross over. The primary reason...
