The Albuquerque Police Department has provided more details on just how many guardsmen will be used and what roles they will fill to assist officers after the governor declared a crime-related emergency in the city. APD spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said Friday that 60 members of the New Mexico National Guard will fulfill non-law enforcement duties for the department starting in mid-May. Of those deployed, 36 will help secure scenes and perimeters during incidents and investigations, 12 will help operate drones for the Real Time Crime Center, and 12 will work with the Prisoner Transport Center to “help evidence collection and...

A travel influencer declared that Albuquerque, New Mexico owns the 'most frightful neighborhood in America' after he was stunned by what he witnessed on a trip there. YouTuber Nick Johnson, who has built a following of over 1.1 million subscribers by visiting the most squalid areas of the country, shared his astonishment during a visit to Albuquerque's squalid International District. Known as 'The War Zone' by locals, the area is littered with homeless encampments and open-air drug taking. 'Oh my god, oh my god,' Johnson said to himself as he filmed the streets filled with gangs, homeless people and trash....

As Tax Day approaches on April 15, a new WalletHub report ranks New Mexico dead last in the nation for taxpayer return on investment (ROI), raising serious questions about how effectively state government uses public funds. The annual study from WalletHub evaluated all 50 states using 29 metrics across five key categories: education, health, safety, economy, and infrastructure & pollution. New Mexico ranked 50th overall despite having one of the highest tax burdens in the country. The state placed near the bottom in nearly every category: 49th in education 42nd in health 50th in safety 45th in economy 34th in...

Last September, the FBI released its national crime statistics for 2023. The numbers for New Mexico can be described only as catastrophic.New Mexico had the highest per capita rate for violent crime of any state at 7.8 incidents per thousand and the highest rate for any state for property crime at 29.84 per thousand. Violent crime includes the offenses of aggravated assault, homicide, rape, and robbery. Property crime includes arson, burglary, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft.I wanted to do a deeper dive into the crime stats for New Mexico’s five largest cities and compare those stats to the national averages...

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on Friday issued an emergency order suspending the right to carry firearms in public across Albuquerque and the surrounding county for at least 30 days in the midst of a spate of gun violence. The Democratic governor said she is expecting legal challenges but felt compelled to act in response to gun deaths, including the fatal shooting of an 11-year-old boy outside a minor league baseball stadium this week. The firearms suspension is tied to a threshold for violent crime rates that only the Albuquerque area currently meets. Police...

Detectives have detained a suspect in a string of killings of Muslim men in Albuquerque. Muhammad Syed, 51, was taken into custody Monday night. Syed is charged in two of the homicides — that of Aftab Hussein on July 26 and Muhammad Afzaal Hussain on Aug. 1. Police say the evidence shows he knew the victims “to some extent” and a conflict may have led to the shootings. They say the gun used in the two homicides was discovered in a search of his home overnight. Albuquerque police had been working with the FBI and local law enforcement after four...

A South Side Locos street gang member arrested on drug and weapons charges told members of an FBI task force that – in addition to drugs and cash – he had a machine gun and other firearms in his house because Albuquerque is “a crazy place” and “very violent.” The agents were investigating a gang that was robbing street-level drug dealers when they raided the home of Manuel Humberto Bolivar, 21, earlier this month. Bolivar, who is known as “Manny,” “Gino,” “G” and “Little Sapo,” was charged in federal court with possession of a machine gun, possession of methamphetamine and...

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — After a three week search, police have arrested the suspect accused of shooting and killing a man outside a Northeast Albuquerque car wash last month. Jerrod Holguin, 22, was booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center Tuesday morning on outstanding warrants. An arrest warrant has been filed charging him with murder. According to the arrest warrant affidavit, Holguin’s mother identified him as the man seen in security camera video shooting at 30-year-old Matthew Shaw on July 23. Shaw was struck in the back and died at the scene.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Mayor Richard Berry said police are trying to identify about 30 “thugs” who threw rocks and engaged in other violence during this week’s protest against Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. A team of officers is examining video and photos to build criminal cases for prosecution. Berry and Albuquerque’s police chief, Gorden Eden, estimated that about 1,000 people attended the anti-Trump protest — and perhaps 30 people engaged in violence against police or others. Eden said protesters threw rocks and molotov-cocktail-like devices at officers. One person used a rod of some sort to strike a police horse. “It...

Police discover valuable Momaday art in condemned apartment Art showed up in a surprising place last week, when a police officer discovered more than $33,000 worth of prints by renowned artist Al Momaday in a condemned property in the Northeast Heights. According to the incident report, an Albuquerque police officer accompanied city officials who were boarding up an apartment known to him as a site for stashing stolen property. The U.S. Justice Department on Thursday released a scathing report in response to a series of deadly police shootings that pointed to patterns of excessive force by the Albuquerque Police Department, serious constitutional violations and a lack of training and oversight of its officers. After more than a year of reviewing hundreds of cases handled by the Albuquerque police, the federal agency found that officers too frequently used deadly force on people "who posed a minimal threat" and used a higher level of force too often on those with mental illness.

9:40am UPDATE: New Mexico's Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management has activated the state's Emergency Operations Center to a Level 3 operations status because of the effects of the extreme cold in communities across New Mexico, Secretary-Designate Michael S. Duvall said in a news release. Albuquerque Public Safety Director Darren White told KOAT-TV this morning that as many as 20,000 city residents could be without gas service today. Increased demand has led to lower gas pressure around the city and the potential for loss of service, and the city was contacted early this morning and told of the potential...

Sorry, Bugs Bunny, you had it right the first time. Don't take that left turn at Albuquerque, or you might end up as hypocritical as the hometown Tribune newspaper. Their one-sided talk radio coverage would have the Warner Bros. character asking, "what's up, doc?" While quick to attack Rush Limbaugh and "right wing" talk radio this weekend, the Tribune has to date apparently said nothing about Air America's sleazy funding scandal, where $875,000 in taxpayer funds seem to have been diverted from an inner-city community center, to the liberal radio network. That's despite the existence of a local Air America...
