During Holy Week and particularly on Good Friday, tens of thousands of people make the pilgrimage to the northern New Mexico village of Chimayó. Some walk just a few miles from Española. Others come from as far away as Santa Fe and Albuquerque.

I remember driving on I-25 between Albuquerque and Santa Fe and seeing crowds of people walking along the freeway. I thought it was strange, but then again I’m not Catholic.

The Via Dolorosa in old Jerusalem is 0.37 miles according to Wikipedia. So that’s how long Jesus is believed to have walked - albeit with a very, very heavy weight-of-the-world (literally) Cross.

It’s paying homage to that, with the weight of distance.

I grew up in this area after my parents decided to move their young white family to what I consider the American version of Juarez. Alcalde, NM. The Catholic religion with these Mexican-Americans is just nuts. They “walk the Santuario” and believe all their sins are forgiven afterwards. Its very much like buying indulgences back in the middle ages. To me as a kid it was weird weird weird. Creepy weird.

The video is really humanizing. People have different personal reasons inspiring them to make the trek.

One young man said it was a way to thank God for helping him out of a really rough season of life.

I promise you, spend 10 years there and you’ll feel like you’re stuck in some kind of time warp. I’m not talking about affluent Sante Fe or (fillintheblank) other nice NM place. I’m talking about places like Alcalde, NM (Google it). What a horrible place for a white kid to grow up.

I’m...familiar with NM - but yes mainly Santa Fe and ABQ. And for me, even they feel like time warps, but by a few decades, not centuries. (Okay actually aspects of Santa Fe do echo Spanish settlements!)

*~* Land of Enchantment *~*

To me, as an adult, your condescending attitude is weird weird weird ... Creepy weird.

even they feel like time warps

Considering the depth of perversion that is considered "acceptable" today ... abortion, sodomy, sodomite mockery of marriage, genital mutilation, pederasty, pedophilia, sexual slavery ...

A time warp would be a good thing. The "standards" of today have been weighed in the balance and found wanting.

You dont sound like an adult. 12 year olds are known for just repeating what other people that they dont like say. Can you be just a little bit original. Monkey see monkey do?

Just holding up a mirror to a child ... showing children the ridiculousness of their tantrums can be effective in ending their tantrums ... you admit your condescending attitude is that of a child ... so I treat you like a child.

Nobody pays to make a Santurio pilgrimage and nobody thinks their sins are forgiven by it (unless they are severely ignorant). Even indulgences do not forgive sins, only the temporal punishments due for sins already forgiven. It is a way to make amends for the spiritual damage your sins have caused.

Did the Penitentes make the pilgrimage, or did they succumb to blood loss?

He was describing his childhood experience of feeling like an outsider over a long period of time.
You quickly labeled his testimony as condescending and less than valid.
Many folks have had that feeling during their youth, back before they had any say on where they lived.
