Report says consumer adoption of 3DTV will slow this year. The shroud of indifference in which retailers find themselves as they try to incite consumer interest in 3DTV isn’t expected to lift much this year, while consumer interest in connected TVs continues to thrive, according to a new report. Sales of 3DTVs are projected to actually decline in 2011 as issues surrounding a universal standard, eyewear, dearth of content and price resolve themselves, according SNL Kagan. Principal 3DTV drivers include live sports and ongoing (though waning) interest in theatrical 3D movies. 3DTV households should top 1.8 million by the end...

3-D TV is not yet winning over consumers. TV makers have naturally been talking up 3-D TV whenever they can because it creates a new top-end market for boxes at a time when prices of existing HD-ready stock continues to plummet. Vendors of network infrastructure equipment rather like 3-D as well because it will eat up bandwidth and boost demand for their products in the access network, content distribution networks and in fiber-based cores. But, operators are more ambivalent, because they are not convinced that consumers are taking to 3-D in the way they did to HDTV, which delivered a...

Japanese electronics giant Toshiba on Monday said it will launch the first liquid crystal display 3D television that does not require users to wear special glasses. Toshiba will offer 20-inch and 12-inch Regza GL1 Series sets in Japan from the end of December, the company said. The 12-inch model is expected to sell for about 120,000 yen (1,400 dollars) and the 20-inch model will carry a price tag of 240,000 yen, Dow Jones Newswires reported.

Washington, D.C. (April 14, 2010) -- Samsung has posted a warning on its Australian web site that watching 3D HDTV could be harmful to young children, pregnant women, the elderly and others, even the drunk. The company apparently is reacting to reports that watching the reality-alerting images has left some people with headaches and a feeling of dizziness. Samsung, which last month launched two 3D HDTV models in the U.S., says in the warning that "children and teenagers may be more susceptible to health issues associated with viewing in 3D and should be closely supervised when viewing these images." But...

Panasonic, which made a big splash at the Consumer Electronics Show last month by demonstrating a $21,000, dual-lens 3D camcorder alongside consumer 3D HD sets, announced Thursday (Feb. 11) that it is now ready to take orders. Starting Thursday, interested buyers can place a non-refundable $1,000 deposit with Panasonic Broadcast to reserve one of the AG-3DA1 units, which begin shipping in September. The camera weighs less than 6.6 pounds and records the left- and right-eye images necessary for 3D on separate SDHC/SD solid-state memory cards using AVCHD compression. It also features dual HD-SDI uncompressed outputs, suitable for feeding into...

Crystalline Materials Making 3D TV Reality March 29, 2002 08:30 CDT A research team at the University of California in Los Angeles has devised a means of directing the molecular action of crystalline materials with properties of both solids and liquids. This advance that may do for television and computers what the transistor did for electronics. This means that in less than a decade, consumers may be able sit back and revel in solid-looking images that literally project out from a television-like device. That's not to mention the light-driven computer that could work maybe a million times faster or store...
