Claiming that Arnold Schwarzenegger's broad appeal gives a fresh edge to the GOP, Republican politicians across the country are celebrating the action hero's strong win in California. The state is a Democratic stronghold, but Schwarzenegger drew many Democratic voters -- including substantial numbers of Latinos -- into his muscular fold. These days, the GOP needs a little good news. President Bush's poll ratings are sinking like a stone as voters gripe about the jobless recovery and recoil at the $87 billion bill the president has submitted for Iraq. Then there's that pesky investigation of a serious national security leak, which...

As Arnold Schwarzenegger gets ready to set up office in Sacramento, he might want to put a Bloomberg at the top of his list.

I'm refer ring, of course, not to the New York mayor but to the ubiquitous market data machine Bloomberg created decades ago. That's because as Schwarzenegger begins to govern, the mood at Wall and Broad Streets may be more important to his success than the mood at Hollywood and Vine.

Posted on Sun, Oct. 12, 2003 A Campaign in Turmoil By Thomas Fitzgerald Inquirer Staff Writer Mayor Street and Republican challenger Sam Katz have spent nine months testing their messages with polls and focus groups, raising money, shooting television commercials, and making speeches. None of that may matter anymore. The discovery of an FBI bug in the mayor's office last week has inextricably altered a campaign that should be winding up for a carefully scripted finale. Now, nothing seems certain. Both camps are scrambling to make sense of the new landscape even as time rapidly runs out. "There is no...

On the beach here you can sunbathe, surf some of the best waves in Southern California, and enjoy the picnic food of your choice. Tai-chi devotees do their morning exercises on the water's edge, and the weekend air is full of Frisbees and footballs. What you can't do, at least after a new city ordinance takes effect next month, is smoke. This upscale, health-conscious city (population 13,000) north of San Diego is on the verge of becoming the first in California - maybe the continental U.S. - to ban smoking on the beach. The reasons are many: the look, the...

"I am keenly aware that the proliferation of chemical and biological weapons is an issue of grave importance to all nations. Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process. "The responsibility of the United States in this conflict is to eliminate weapons of mass destruction, to minimize the danger to our troops and to diminish the suffering of the Iraqi people. The citizens of Iraq have suffered the most for Saddam Hussein's activities; sadly,...

The people who cook you dinner are starting to get nervous. Really nervous.

In a nation saddled with an obesity crisis, food is fast becoming the new tobacco. This year alone, makers of popular snack foods such as Doritos and Oreos have scrambled to reconfigure recipes and shrink portions, and McDonald's has been forced to deal with two lawsuits claiming the food giant is culpable as America's waistline continues to grow.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Fearing a political backlash, lawmakers at work on a Medicare drug bill are ready to spend billions of dollars to discourage companies from dropping or reducing coverage for retirees when a new federal benefit begins. Options under consideration include subsidies or tax breaks for companies, beyond money contained in legislation that passed the House and Senate earlier this year, congressional aides said. Lawmakers also probably will loosen federal regulations envisioned under the proposed new Medicare prescription drug program for companies that maintain existing coverage, according to the aides, who spoke on condition of anonymity. ``No one knows...

What a world. Voters have elected a serial groper to be governor of California. And women helped put him there. According to exit polls, 44 percent of Arnold Schwarzenegger's voters were women. Whatever were they thinking? That the devil made him do it? That all men are dogs and can't help themselves? Or that the women who pointed the finger at Schwarzenegger were lying or acting as pawns of the Democrats? It wasn't just a few women. It began with two women putting their names out there in public and ended up, in less than a week, with about a...

All of the excesses of rap music are coming home to roost with a vengeance. In his book, Hip Hoptionary: The Dictionary of Hip Hop Terminology, author Alonzo Westbrook argues that rap music has great social and cultural significance and redeeming value. But he and other commentators who see only the positive in rap have unwittingly given birth to antirap products, such as the board game Ghettopoly. I will return to Ghettopoly shortly. "Through catchy tunes, inventive phrases, and expressive voices," Westbrook writes, "rappers address the concerns and hopes of America in ways "intellectuals' have not or cannot because they...

A huge explosion rocked central Baghdad today and smoke was billowing into the air from the direction of the Baghdad Hotel, believed to be a headquarters of the US Central Intelligence Agency in the Iraqi capital. The blast rattled windows in the Palestine Hotel, home to many members of the international press corps covering the aftermath of the US-led war in Iraq.

Well, well, well, what d'ya know? The music industry has suddenly discovered the existence of something called morality. They seem to have been singularly unaware of it before. In their exuberance to extol unrestricted sex, violence, rebellion and everything else they imply by the word "freedom," things like right and wrong didn't figure prominently in their product lines. For years, in fact, the same industry has urged 12-year-olds and up to do whatever came into their heads. The message always was: The hell with authority. Do your own thing. Now they have discovered that they need morality to stay in...

Portugal shamed by child sex A child sex abuse scandal has reached into the heart of Portugese politics and celebrity … and the cover-ups may already have begun. Alison Roberts in Lisbon reports on a hidden outrage When the organisers of last Thursday’s European conference in Lisbon on the disappearance and sexual exploitation of children decided to invite Portugal’s president to open the event, they knew they had a good chance of success. The conference, organised by the Institute for the Support of Children, and indeed addressed by head of state Jorge Sampaio, is the latest sign of a major...

Three miles off the Florida coast in April 2002, two Greenpeace activists clambered from an inflatable rubber speedboat onto a cargo ship. They were detained before they could unfurl a banner, spent the weekend in custody and two months later were sentenced to time served for boarding the ship without permission.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Gov.-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger said it would be a top priority during his first 100 days in office: repealing a new law that allows illegal immigrants to get driver's licenses. Easier said than done, politicians and activists said Friday. While exit polls showed about 70 percent of voters in California's recall election disapproved of the law, it may be tough to wipe off the books. Gov. Gray Davis signed the measure last month amid accusations that he was pandering to Hispanic voters. Republican Schwarzenegger plans to ask the Democrat-controlled state Legislature, now in recess, to convene a special...

WASHINGTON -- Wesley Clark, the retired four-star general who is running for president, got himself in hot water with his Pentagon bosses more than once in his 34-year military career.

Clark matter-of-factly recounts when the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff grumbled that Clark had "one foot on a banana peel and one foot in the grave." Less than a year later, Clark was yanked out of his job as NATO's supreme allied commander.
