Freeper Quiz: Who made this statement?
Snopes ^ | Oct 5, 2003 | Snopes

Posted on 10/12/2003 3:58:59 AM PDT by The Raven

"I am keenly aware that the proliferation of chemical and biological weapons is an issue of grave importance to all nations. Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process.

"The responsibility of the United States in this conflict is to eliminate weapons of mass destruction, to minimize the danger to our troops and to diminish the suffering of the Iraqi people. The citizens of Iraq have suffered the most for Saddam Hussein's activities; sadly, those same citizens now stand to suffer more. I have supported efforts to ease the humanitarian situation in Iraq and my thoughts and prayers are with the innocent Iraqi civilians, as well as with the families of U.S. troops participating in the current action.

"I believe in negotiated solutions to international conflict. This is, unfortunately, not going to be the case in this situation where Saddam Hussein has been a repeat offender, ignoring the international community's requirement that he come clean with his weapons program. While I support the President, I hope and pray that this conflict can be resolved quickly and that the international community can find a lasting solution through diplomatic means. "

Snopes says the collection of WMD quotes are TRUE, but then goes on to explain that some were taken out of context and/or without considering unilateral action.

The one posted above is stated as:
On 16 December 1998, Nancy Pelosi,...

"Let's play Jeopardy"

The answer is:
What bunch (Clinton, Gore, Albright, to mention a few)of lieing say-what-ever-we-need-to-say-to-win-the-moment democratic politicians made these statements back when they were in control of the white house and didn't have the nagging fear that if Bush won too much favor with the people he would be re-elected?

Al Gore straddles the fence with the best of them. His dad taught him all the Dark Side mind-conjuring tricks.

Just don't read "Earth in the Balance" unless you get a laugh out of sci-fi prognostication presented as inevitable facts.

Titans vs. Texans today will consume all attention.

Well......

I think they meant the quotes are true - but not ALL of them were taken out of context.

Good gosh, they're way too long and detailed.

"Well what about Me! What about Raven?!!!"

Sorry, couldn't resist pointing out how the whining of the liberal media sounds a lot like the schtick one pro-wrestler had where he would slouch in a corner and sulk about the unfairness of the "system", etc. for agonizing lengths of time. He was playing the typical Democrat.

Yours and mine, anyway. LOL!

I was an Oilers season ticket holder for years. Dropped them two years before the Oilers announced they were leaving because of Bud Adams.

Everybody in Houston loathed Bud Adams and because of it, there was little support to keep them in Houston. At the "Keep the Oilers in Houston Rally," 12 (twelve) people showed up. Reporters out-numbered the "crowd." That's how bad it was. One thing you can depend on: when people are having the most fun with the team, Bud will do something to mess it up.

Houston was in love with the "Luv Ya Blue" Oilers and Bum Phillips. Over 70,000 people filled the Astrodome to welcome them home after a playoff LOSS in Pittsburg. Bud's response to the public support of his team was--he fired Bum Phillips! Houston was stunned. After a 11-5 season. I don't remember the Oilers having a record that good again. Could have happened but it wasn't as much fun ever again.

Tennessee got a team, we got rid of one we didn't want, and have a team and management that everbody loves.

All's well that ends well.

"Iraq does pose a serious threat to the stability of the Persian Gulf and we should organize an international coalition to eliminate his access to weapons of mass destruction. Iraq's search for weapons of mass destruction has proven impossible to completely deter and we should assume that it will continue for as long as Saddam is in power." -- Al Gore, 2002

Does 2 out of 3 count?

"There is no doubt that ... Saddam Hussein has reinvigorated his weapons programs. Reports indicate that biological, chemical and nuclear programs continue apace and may be back to pre-Gulf War status. In addition, Saddam continues to redefine delivery systems and is doubtless using the cover of a licit missile program to develop longer-range missiles that will threaten the United States and our allies." - Letter to President Bush, Signed by Sen. Bob Graham (D, FL,) and others, Dec, 5, 2001. 7

"The first time we may be completely certain he has a -- nuclear weapons is when, God forbids, he uses one. We owe it to all our citizens to do everything in our power to prevent that day from coming." - President Bush, September 2002.8

"I don't think he really has to prove anything. I think that most Americans, including myself, will take the president's word for it. But the president has never said that Saddam has the capability of striking the United States with atomic or biological weapons anytime in the immediate future." - Gov. Howard Dean, September 2002.9, 10

We begin with the common belief that Saddam Hussein is a tyrant and a threat to the peace and stability of the region. He has ignored the mandate of the United Nations and is building weapons of mass destruction and the means of delivering them. - Sen. Carl Levin (d, MI), Sept. 19, 2002 11

We know that he has stored secret supplies of biological and chemical weapons throughout his country...Iraq's search for weapons of mass destruction has proven impossible to deter and we should assume that it will continue for as long as Saddam is in power. - Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002. 12

We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction. - Senator Ted Kennedy (D, MA), Sept. 27, 2002. 13

The last UN weapons inspectors left Iraq in October of 1998. We are confident that Saddam Hussein retains some stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons, and that he has since embarked on a crash course to build up his chemical and biological warfare capabilities. Intelligence reports indicate that he is seeking nuclear weapons... - Sen. Robert Byrd (D, WV), Oct. 3, 2002. 14

"Facing clear evidence of peril, we cannot wait for the final proof -- the smoking gun -- that could come in the form of a mushroom cloud." - President Bush, October 2002.15

"I will be voting to give the President of the United States the authority to use force-- if necessary -- to disarm Saddam Hussein because I believe that a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and grave threat to our security." - Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Oct. 9, 2002. 16

There is unmistakable evidence that Saddam Hussein is working aggressively to develop nuclear weapons and will likely have nuclear weapons within the next five years ... We also should remember we have always underestimated the progress Saddam has made in development of weapons of mass destruction." - Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D, WV), Oct 10, 2002 17

He has systematically violated, over the course of the past 11 years, every significant UN resolution that has demanded that he disarm and destroy his chemical and biological weapons, and any nuclear capacity. This he has refused to do. - Rep. Henry Waxman (D, CA), Oct. 10, 2002 18

In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including al Qaeda members. It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons. - Sen. Hillary Clinton (D, NY), Oct 10, 2002 19

We are in possession of what I think to be compelling evidence that Saddam Hussein has, and has had for a number of years, a developing capacity for the production and storage of weapons of mass destruction. - Sen. Bob Graham (D, FL), Dec. 8, 2002 20

"Some have said we must not act until the threat is imminent. Since when have terrorists and tyrants announced their intentions, politely putting us on notice before they strike? If this threat is permitted to fully and suddenly emerge, all actions, all words, and all recriminations would come too late. Trusting in the sanity and restraint of Saddam Hussein is not a strategy, and it is not an option." - President Bush, State of the Union, January 200321

[W]ithout question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime ... He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation ... And now he is miscalculating America's response to his continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction ... So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real ... - Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Jan. 23. 2003 22

"The reason I would have voted against the resolution is they gave the president authority to attack Iraq without making the case that there's an imminent threat," - Gov. Howard Dean, February 200323

"The danger posed by Saddam Hussein and his weapons cannot be ignored or wished away. The danger must be confronted. We hope that the Iraqi regime will meet the demands of the United Nations and disarm, fully and peacefully. If it does not, we are prepared to disarm Iraq by force. Either way, this danger will be removed. The safety of the American people depends on ending this direct and growing threat." - President Bush, February 200324

"The danger is clear: using chemical, biological or, one day, nuclear weapons, obtained with the help of Iraq, the terrorists could fulfill their stated ambitions and kill thousands or hundreds of thousands of innocent people in our country, or any other." - President Bush, March 200325

"One, unilateral action is not appropriate unless there is an imminent threat to the United States. Two, the imminent threat would consist of Iraq's having a nuclear program or developing one or being found, credibly, giving weapons of mass destruction, such as chemical or biological weapons, to terrorists. Three, Saddam needs to be disarmed, period, whether he's an imminent threat or not. Four, the responsibility for disarming Iraq belongs right now to the UN because Saddam is an imminent threat to the region.... Unilateral action is not appropriate." - Gov. Howard Dean, March 2003.26

"Over the past year, the Bush Administration has made specific and unequivocal statements about the imminent threat posed by Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction." - Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich, June 2003 27

Senators John Kerry and Bob Graham were asked at the September 2003 Congressional Black Caucus Institute and Fox News Channel debate if the President intentionally misled the country/American people:

"Well, I don't know the answer to that question until we have the full measure of the investigation into the intelligence and the intelligence failure here." - Senator John Kerry, September 200328

"Yes." - Senator Bob Graham, September 200329

"There was no imminent threat. This was made up in Texas, announced in January to the Republican leadership that war was going to take place and was going to be good politically. This whole thing was a fraud," - Senator Ted Kennedy, September 2003.30, 31

"All I can say is I didn't believe there was an imminent threat to the United States when we went to war, and I'm more convinced from listening to him (Kay) that there never was a threat," - Senator Ted Kennedy, October 2003.32

"I have concluded that there was no imminent threat." - Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, October 2003.33

Here's a Clinton Quote from this year when he was discussing his uncontested bombing raid on Iraq in Dec 1998:

An Interview With Bill Clinton (Atlantic Monthly 2003)

But I'm pretty sure this is the right thing to do. Press ahead with this thing, try to.... we knew when we did the bombing in '98 that we hit all the known or suspected sites based on the intelligence we had, from all the people that were doing that work there. we knew at the time that we had set his program back a couple years. But sooner or later in the millennium the new Administration, whether it was Gore's or Bush's, would have to take this matter up again.
