SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Shares of WorldCom plunged nearly 70 percent in Tuesday's extended session when it was reported that the troubled telecom carrier misrepresented up to $3.6 billion in earnings in a massive accounting fraud. WorldCom could be forced to restate earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortization, or EBITDA, for the past five quarters. CFO Scott Sullivan has also been ousted. The company boosted its cash flow and profits over that five-quarter time period by wrongly booking billions of dollars in expenses as capital expenditures, according to reports. CNBC reported that the WorldCom board of directors only knew...

It is clear that most of those praising the president's speech Monday as a groundbreaking step forward in the so-called peace process are unfamiliar with the 1993 Declaration of Principles of the Oslo Accords ("Oslo").President Bush called for the Palestinians to adopt a new constitution that establishes a representative form of government, a rule of law, and an independent judiciary. He also offered U.S. and international help in overseeing the elections. Oslo Article I states, in part: "The aim of the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations within the current Middle East peace process is, among other things, to establish a Palestinian Interim...

Most here at FreeRepublic are smart enough to know of the indoctrination of hate going on in the Palestinian society. What a contradiction it is to see a little boy engage and identify with elements of war, a diametrically opposed concept to the innocence of childhood. Unless taught, children know no hate, skin color, or political interests. Powerfully reminiscient of the Palestinian who raised his hands, covered in blood, from a window, near the beginning of the violence in the Mideast, a little girl with red paint on her hands raises them in like manner. See for yourself the reality...

PRINCETON, New Jersey A bullish report on gold has been strongly disavowed by Royal Bank of Canada, which is now saying it was for internal consumption only. Prior to repudiation, the report marked the first formal acknowledgement by an investment institution of an American led conspiracy to suppress the price of gold. The report, which was littered with permabull talk, like "gold exploding to the upside", spread like digital wildfire after the Gold Anti-Trust Action Committee got hold of it and mailed it to subscribers. Now knives are out for Murphy who was fined fifteen years ago by the...

Repentance. Holiness.A new focus on the urgency and importance of the Church's teachings on sexual morality. These are the fruits of the Dallas meeting, bishops tell the Register. If, last year at this time, these things were in the hearts of bishops, now they are at the forefront of their minds. If they were convinced of their need before, now they are committed and urgent about them. These intangibles may be the most important result of the bishops'meeting in Dallas - results that can't be neatly summed up in a policy. But a policy was made in Dallas as well.In assessing it, it's...

MANILA, Philippines- The man suspected of masterminding the Sept. 11 attacks lived lavishly in the Philippines with his nephew, the 1993 World Trade Center plotter, partying, scuba-diving and renting a helicopter as they planned attacks against Americans, according to a former police official who investigated al-Qaida. U.S. counterterrorism officials have said that since Sept. 11, evidence has mounted that Khalid Shaikh Mohammed was chief among Osama bin Laden lieutenants organizing the plot that sent hijacked passenger jets crashing into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a Pennsylvania field, killing more than 3,000 people. Abu Zubaydah - a senior al-Qaida...

Greenspan runs out of answersBy IAN LOVETT Markets Writer24jun02FEAR and loathing spread round the globe on the weekend as it dawned on investors that US money boss Alan Greenspan may no longer have the answers. Dr Greenspan is boxed between a stumbling US stockmarket and a slumping US dollar. In previous crises such as the 1997 Asia bubble, 1998's LTCM hedge fund collapse and September 11, Dr Greenspan quickly cut US interest rates. But this time, with US rates near record lows, he appears to be hamstrung. Wall Street strategist Doug Noland said: "Dr Greenspan is caught between a rock...

DAVID SILVERMAN/GETTY IMAGES Strange Bedfellows: Evangelical Christians have many reasons for supporting Israel and its settlements in the West Bank What do End Time prophecies mean for Israel and Judaism? By NANCY GIBBS Evangelical leaders have declared that support for Israel has moved to the very top of their agenda. Christian groups are spending millions on everything from armored school buses for Israeli children to halogen lights for the army's emergency-rescue service. There are e-mail chains, prayer ministries and grassroots efforts to get the word out that the U.S. must stand united with its ally in the war on...

Today's primary runoff between Alabama representative Earl Hilliard and Artur Davis — both Democrats, both black — is a sideline skirmish in the war on terror. Hilliard, the first black man elected to Congress from Alabama since Reconstruction, failed to garner 50 percent of the vote in a June 4 primary. The five-term incumbent faces the challenge of his life in Davis, a 34-year-old lawyer and graduate of Harvard Law School who has never held elective office. Why is a veteran of the House and a mainstay of Alabama politics in political danger? He's got a lot of stains on...

In a closed hearing, Judge William Mudd ordered Damon van Dam out of the courtroom and instructed him to stay away from the third floor of the courthouse in downtown San Diego."As a father I can certainly appreciate the disdain to which you must hold Mr. Westerfield and his counsel. The fact is, however, you represent a security risk at this point in...

EU environment ministers have expressed their disappointment at Australia's refusal to ratify the Kyoto protocol, which is aimed at reducing global greenhouse gas emissions. The ministers have urged all nations which signed on to the protocol in 1997 to live up to their responsibilities and cut their greenhouse gas emissions back to pre-1990 levels. But the ministers say the European Union is particularly disappointed with the recent announcement by Prime Minister John Howard that his Government will not ratify the Kyoto protocol. Earlier this month, Australia backed away from committing itself to the accord until the United States, and developing...

Speaking at a Balboa Park landmark dedicated to America's fighting men and women, GOP gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon yesterday accused Gov. Gray Davis of neglecting California's veterans and said if elected he would overhaul the state Department of Veterans Affairs. "Four years ago, Gray Davis promised us the most veterans-friendly administration of the 20th century," Simon said at the Veterans Memorial Center. "When you look at the record, a cold, hard reality stares you in the face. This governor hasn't delivered." The Davis campaign criticized Simon for taking on a decorated Vietnam veteran. "While Gray Davis was serving as a...

A controversial bill which will transfer ownership of all South Africa's mineral rights from private companies to the state has been passed by parliament's lower house. The governing ANC party and labour organisations say the new legislation would ensure that the black majority in South Africa participates in the mining industry, which has been dominated by whites since the apartheid era. Gold accounts for 10% of South Africa's exports However, the mining companies argue that the bill violates property rights and will undermine the confidence of international investors in the South African economy.

C-SPAN Editor's Note: What follows is testimony provided to the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, chaired by Sen. James M. Jeffords. Fossil fuels currently provide around 84% of energy consumed in the United States, and roughly 80% of the energy produced worldwide. Those energy resources are key to improving the human condition and the environment. Human use of fossil fuels has increased the amount of greenhouse gases, in particular, carbon dioxide, in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is essential to life on earth. Moreover, the greenhouse effect is important to life on earth in that the greenhouse gases...
