http://www.NewsAndOpinion.com -- When the United States builds a missile-defense shield, it should leave a small hole right above Harvard University -- and Yale, Stanford, Columbia and Brown. Each of these institutions bans the U.S. Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) from conducting classes on its campus. Until they let ROTC back on campus, let them defend themselves. Now, when America is under attack, it is vital that America's youth know the military personally, rather than buying professorial slander about the military-industrial complex and the "dark side" of the U.S. armed forces. Still, many top-notch universities ban ROTC. Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Columbia...

In recent years, Agustin Gomez Mendez and other Maya Indians in far southern Mexico have taken yet one more sharp turn in a long quest for redemption, deciding that Jesus Christ isn't their personal savior after all. "There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger," says Gomez Mendez, a poor farmer and father of six who converted his family to Islam in 1996 under the tutelage of Spanish missionaries. Over the past few years, about 300 evangelical Christian Maya have converted to Islam in southernmost Chiapas state, which has been riven by spiritual struggles for centuries. The...

Authorities in Loxley, Alabama, are investigating the alleged beating of a preacher by funeral mourners who didn't like his blunt eulogy. Glynis Bethel tells The Associated Press that her husband -- Pastor Orlando Bethel -- was attacked during a June 14th funeral and dragged out of the church. That's because Bethel told mourners the deceased was in Hell and that they were headed the same way. The dead man was Mrs. Bethel's uncle. Pastor Bethel referred to him as a "drunkard and a fornicator." Mrs. Bethel, who's also a preacher, says -- quote -- "the fornicators didn't like what he...

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Supreme Court on Monday banned F. Lee Bailey from practicing law before the justices, a formality for the attorney who has already been disbarred in two states. Bailey, who defended O.J. Simpson and other high-profile clients, was accused of mishandling stock owned by a drug defendant. The Supreme Court refused in May to review a Florida Supreme Court decision that barred Bailey from practicing law in that state. Bailey also lost his law license in Massachusetts after a review of the Florida decision. AP-ES-06-24-02 1141EDT

Televised proceedings a far cry from O.J. fiasco By Alex RothUNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITERJune 23, 2002 In retrospect, it's hard to pinpoint the most cartoonish aspect of the O.J. Simpson trial. Maybe it was the sitcom-style insults traded by the attorneys, or the ringing cell phones in the courtroom, or Johnnie Cochran making up rhymes during closing arguments. All of it broadcast live on television. The Simpson case was a public-relations fiasco for the California courts – and many people blamed the television camera. It became conventional wisdom in the legal community that televising trials was a bad idea. The...

CNN Chief News Executive Eason Jordan said his news network had made "inexcusable mistakes," and had presented "incorrect perceptions" of the Middle East conflict, but denied that it was biased against either Israel or the Palestinians in its coverage. After CNN founder Ted Turner equated Israeli military actions with suicide bombers, the company dispatched Jordan to Israel as part of a damage-control mission. "We're not perfect," Jordan admitted, speaking to Israel Insider staff. "There are things we can do better, and our intention is to be totally fair in our coverage." An online petition posted on Israel Insider demanded that...

Did you ever wonder why the Lord commanded His disciples to wait in Jerusalem? The Holy Spirit could have come anywhere. The answer is in a prophecy from Isaiah sung by religious Jews in synagogues across the world. "Ke Mitzion Taytzeh Torah" - And the Law shall go forth from Zion. "Oodavar Adonai may Yerushalayim" - and the Word of the Lord shall go forth from Jerusalem. when Orthodox Jews chant this, they actually bear witness to Messiah, who brought the Word of God to the world from Jerusalem. If the Jewish people knew the Gospel would have to begin...

WASHINGTON, DC, Jun 20, 02 (CWNews.com) - US House Republicans on Wednesday proposed a new bill that would once again try to ban partial-birth abortion, a procedure that kills a child after he is mostly delivered outside his mother's womb. Rep. Steve Chabot, R-Ohio, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, predicted that the bill would be approved by Congress and signed into law this year and that it will survive a constitutional challenge. Previous versions of the ban were vetoed by former President Bill Clinton. Chabot said the US Supreme Court's action in 2000 of overturning a Nebraska partial-birth abortion...
