The appalling story of the pedophile priests deserves all the negative press it has been getting. But is the press critical of them because they are pedophiles or because they are priests? After all, there are many other pedophiles, some of them with their own organization, and they are welcomed on our leading academic campuses, as well as getting a free pass in the mainstream media. Even as regards the pedophile priests, the media shy away from the plain fact that these cases are primarily cases of homosexual abuse of children. Fear of the homosexual lobby always seems to immobilize...

The sole remaining lawsuit that grew out of a tree-cutting protest in downtown Eugene five years ago was settled out of court Thursday with a $30,000 city payment to three demonstrators who were pepper-sprayed by police. In the settlement, neither side admitted wrongdoing. But the city agreed to require all officers with the rank of sergeant and above to attend two training sessions on police response to nonviolent protests. The sessions are to be conducted by an outside consultant in 2003 and 2004. Spokesmen for both sides said the protest and its turbulent aftermath taught them bitter lessons but left...

Who might replace him if push comes to shove in 2004? NEWSWEEK WEB EXCLUSIVE June 20 — Coming to the capital has not been a great career move for Tom Ridge. BUT NOW, as he begins his sales pitch to Congress for the new Department of Homeland Security, Ridge is damaged political...

The Washington Post reports today that whether Yaser Esam Hamdi is an "enemy combatant" or not, he is entitled to a lawyer and a chance to hear the government's proof against him, a federal public defender argued yesterday in a brief to an appeals court. Hamdi, 21, was captured in Afghanistan with retreating Taliban forces in November, and he has been in U.S. custody ever since. He was moved from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to a Navy brig in Norfolk after disclosing that he was born in Louisiana and might be a U.S. citizen. When Public Defender Frank W. Dunham Jr....

State Dept.: Bush plan for Palestinian state 'evolving' By The Associated Press President George W. Bush's senior advisers debated Friday how to create a Palestinian state in the violent Middle East, leaving an anticipated presidential announcement on hold. "There are still discussions going on," State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said. He offered no prediction when unsettled issues might be resolved. "This is an evolving process," Boucher said, "but the president has indeed reached some conclusions." Saint Aloysius Gonzaga: Patron of Youth by William Hart McNichols, S.J. "St. Aloysius with battered poor children" "The Lord nurtured and taught him; he guarded him as the apple of his eye...the Lord alone was his leader." -Deuteronomy 32:10-12 Eight years ago I was visiting my parents' home in Colorado when I decided to look through a drawer of Jesuit Bulletins my mother keeps faithfully in a living room table. I was actually looking for a picture of my then-favorite Jesuit saint, the English poet/martyr St. Robert Southwell. Instead I stumbled across an issue with a photograph of a...

What's so good about democracy -- generally understood as having trust in the general will of a democratic people, as expressed by a vote of the majority, to make all important decisions? If a majority of our 535 congressmen votes for one measure or another, is that all right with you? You say: "What's the story, Williams? Is there a better method of making important decisions?" I say yes, but let's first decide whether we'd really like majority rule as a criterion for making important decisions. Suppose you're making the important decision to marry. Would you like the decision about...
