Suspect Being Chased By Police Electrocuted On Subway Track

JUNE 21ST, 2002

A man fleeing police in Manhattan died Friday after running onto subway tracks and getting electrocuted.

The incident happened early this morning at the Christopher Street station.

According to authorities, officers were pursuing a man they say was involved in a drug deal. Police say when they approached him, he ran down into the subway.

A train was stopped in the station, but police say the man tried to go between two subway cars and fell to the tracks, where he hit the third rail.

Southbound train service on the 1 and 2 lines was disrupted for several hours, but is now back to normal.

I just thought it kind of 'fit' with the escapee being eaten by a croc while attempting escape...

Perhaps the "Darwin Awards" needs a special category for (convicted or alleged) criminals?

I sent that link to the buds in the office - you are correct, this is a good follow up.

A few years ago, I was riding to work in Crystal City on the Metro. The train suddenly stopped, and we were held in place for about half an hour.

I found out from a coworker what happened: a bum (yes, I'm old enough to say "bum" and not "street person" or "homeless person," this guy was a "bum") had been walking along the right of way, and felt nature's call.

He urinated on the third rail, with predictable (and fatal) results.

I hope he had an IQ above 59; the Supremes will be shocked by this.
