Where we differ with Americans Jamal Khashoggi, Deputy Editor-in-Chief, ARAB NEWS, Arab News Where we differ with Americans By Jamal Khashoggi JEDDAH, 12 April — US President George W. Bush said recently, “I mean what I say when I call upon the Arab world to strongly condemn and act against terrorist activity.” We, the Arabs, have no problem with “strongly condemning and acting against terrorist activity.” In fact, we did not need a US president to “call upon” us to do that. We have always condemned terrorism, and condemned it “strongly”. The president’s call was not for anything specific, say,...

Senior columnist, Asharq Al-Awsat, Al Madina, Urdu News, Gulf News, Arrab News An open letter to President Bush Dear President Bush, I hope you will appreciate the spirit in which this letter is being written. However, I am also someone who has come to the conclusion that those principles have been so consistently undermined in recent times that they have little or no relevance now. My intention is to give you a firsthand...

So, how long do you hold a grudge? Do you teach it to your children like the Hatfields and McCoys? When I read that the Arabs were teaching their children to hate England, America, Israel, and assorted others I noticed that they started with the Crusades.I expect they left out this part of history, the battle of Tours and the invasion by the Saracens of Spain from 711 to 715.This has been going on a long time. It has been going on since the start of Christianity, since the beginning of Judaism. That's a few thousand years. Medieval Sourcebook: Arabs, Franks,...

In the wake of a suicide bomb attack Tuesday on a crowded Jerusalem city bus that killed 19 people and wounded at least 70 more, the Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas, took credit for the blast. Israeli officials called it the deadliest attack in Jerusalem in six years. Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon immediately vowed to fight "Palestinian terror" and summoned his cabinet to decide on a military response to the organization that Sharon had once described as "the deadliest terrorist group that we have ever had to face." Active in Gaza and the West Bank, Hamas wants to liberate all...

Does viewing images of barbarism strengthen us or demoralize us? That may have once been a question for media theorists, but the horrific images of decapitated Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl -- available on the Internet – have made it a pressing matter for us all. After murdering Pearl, his Islamofascist kidnappers edited and distributed a ghastly video of their butchery that included statements by the reporter -- clearly made under duress – as well as scenes from the continuing conflicts in the Middle East and South Asia. The question of whether to watch these images has turned...

What do you think about the fact that we are doing everything we can as a nation to capture thug terrorists, but you can still walk over our southern border anytime, day or night, and never have to worry about being captured? Many women are complaining, as I am, that we are being virtually molested at the airport prior to getting on an aircraft, and all in the name of national security, yet our southern border is as porous as it has ever been. Doesn't that make you mad, all you ladies out there who have had a some guy's...
