Eco-Terrorists and Eco-Terrorism -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- July 19, 2001 OlyPen PIFWire: An Opinion Piece by the PIF Hisself -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen's Associations (PCFFA) is an insult to all real commercial fishermen, women, children, the profession and their way of life. We, the real commercial fishermen, do not support, want to, or believe in taking anyone's property by any means. We do not believe the courts have any business or particular expertise to regulate water to the extent of grievously harming one party to the complete and exclusive benefit of another. The Klamath Decision is far more devastating and ...

Harlemites give a warm welcome to former-US President Bill Clinton with a parade and praising speeches, as he moves into his new office space on 125th Street. It's taken a few months for his office to be renovated, and all the while some Harlemites had their doubts, thinking that former US President Clinton was really bluffing about moving Uptown. But with a parade, welcoming speeches, and few protests, Clinton made his way with glowing smiles to his new 14th floor penthouse offices at 55 W. 125th Street on Monday, July 30, 2001. Only a few noted protests occurred during the ...

City's Gun Suit Has 1 Last ShotOn the heels of a recent outbreak of crime in the metro area, New Orleans is pressing ahead with a proposed law that would allow cities to sue gun makers to recoup the cost of gun violence. Last week the police department announced a major crackdown on violent crime, prompted, in part, by a rise in the number of July murders. On the heels of that initiative, the city is trying to force weapons manufacturers to accept some responsibility for the violence. In 1998, New Orleans filed the first lawsuit of its kind against ...

Prior to ten years ago, I believed that if a woman wanted to have an abortion, I had no role in that decision as a man: Her body, her decision. I had no consideration of the baby in the womb, as I did not see the unborn child as a human being. Seeing things that way also conveniently removed any responsibility I may have felt as a father. I certainly did not consider the emotional destruction that a woman has to deal with as a result of having an abortion. But that all changed... I had considered myself a Christian ...

There are two high churches of the golf swing. In one, doctrine holds that the body swings the arms; David Leadbetter is its best known high priest. In the other, doctrine says the arms swing the body. Its priest is Jim Flick. Thousands of words, many of them very bad, have been written on this subject. (As any writer knows, describing a physical action precisely and effectively is just about the toughest task in prose.) Late in his career, Ben Hogan collaberated with illustrator Anthony Ravielli and writer Herbert Warren Wind to produce the first modern golf instruction book, Ben ...

Clinton's presidential envy Most ex-presidents just fade away, but not Bill Clinton. Far from it. He's setting up a presidency in exile back home in Arkansas. Just this week, he filed an architectural plan with the Hot Springs zoning board to create a mini-Camp David. Friends say he wants to use the secluded site on Lake Hamilton to schmooze world and corporate leaders. He even looks to do some freelance foreign policy in his favorite interest areas: the Middle East, Ireland, and Africa. The Clinton Presidential Foundation Retreat is actually on 6.98 acres of family land in Hot Springs, where ...

Boston Boy Scouts Allow Gay Leaders BOSTON (AP) -- One of Massachusetts' largest Boy Scout councils will allow gay scoutmasters under a new ''don't ask-don't tell'' policy, despite the national organization's ban against homosexuals. ''Discussions about sexual orientation do not have a place in Scouts,'' said Brock Bigsby, Scout executive for the Massachusetts Minuteman Council. ''The Scouts will not inquire into a person's sexual history, and that person will not expose their sexual orientation one way or the other.'' The Minuteman Council, an umbrella organization of 330 Scout troops and 18,000 Boy Scouts in Greater Boston, approved the bylaw ...

I was having a pleasant enough morning, having played a quick nine holes of golf in unseasonably cool weather, until I came home and resumed my daily scrutiny of the Internet, looking for news to stimulate this afternoon’s radio conversation. The mood was broken when I read a piece by UPI economics writer Martin Hutchinson, who thinks not only is the boom over, but that a major bust is looming dead ahead. Furthermore, he puts this grim analysis next to the massive media campaign to rehabilitate the image of the impeached ex-president Clinton and concludes that the stage is being ...

U.S. Threatens to Boycott Racism Talks By NORMAN KEMPSTER, Times Staff Writer WASHINGTON -- By threatening to boycott a U.N. conference on racism, the Bush administration is protesting efforts to equate Zionism with racism and to demand reparations for slavery. But critics say the tactic could backfire, isolating the United States from an international forum that will take place regardless. Although most human rights advocates agree with the administration's objections to the agenda, they are split on the wisdom of a boycott, with some urging the U.S. delegation to fight for its principles on the floor of the conference, ...

Troubled "West Wing" honcho Aaron Sorkin, nabbed on drug charges in April, says he was often high on crack when he wrote the 1995 movie "The American President." "I was smoking crack cocaine every day" while writing the movie, Sorkin tells TV Guide in an interview appearing in the magazine's upcoming issue. Sorkin says that while living at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles, he would write a few pages of the movie a day, while he was sober - then put the Do Not Disturb sign on his door and get high on crack. "That is why it ...

Be Wary of Rich Cabinet Members? On January 27, 1993, the Associated Press reported that nine of Bill Clinton's cabinet appointees were millionaires. On January 23, 2001, the AP reported that George W. Bush's nominees were "mostly millionaires." Dan Rather decided to follow the AP's lead in the Bush story, but not with the Clinton story. Rather never mentioned--throughout all eight years--that there were millionaires in Clinton's cabinets: Dan Rather #1: "Financial disclosure reports today show many in the Bush Cabinet and other top posts have two things in common: they're multimillionaires and many hold stock in companies affected by ...

TIME and again, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton insists she's not - now or ever - a presidential candidate. But the former first lady is fueling speculation she wants to return to the White House by holding a private chat with young Democrats from Iowa - the state courted by all presidential wannabes. The Post has learned that Clinton dropped in for a cameo appearance recently when Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) hosted several dozen Iowa members of the 21st Century Forum Democrats, which backs populist candidates. In an interview, Harkin downplayed Clinton's role, noting that the young Democrats spoke to 13 ...

William Kennedy Smith Rules Out 2002 Congress RunWASHINGTON (Reuters) - William Kennedy Smith, who was acquitted of rape in a sensational 1991 trial, said on Wednesday that he had decided not to run for the U.S. Congress in 2002 but did not rule out running at a later date. Smith, a third-generation member of the Kennedy political clan, said he wanted to focus on his work as a physician specializing in rehabilitation for amputees and would not seek a seat in Congress. ``I decided over the weekend really that I did not want to proceed at the moment in the ...
