  • FBI Follies: Bureau secretly probed Trump as a Russian asset for firing Comey: declassified memos

The FBI opened a criminal probe specifically targeting Donald Trump in May 2017, alleging the newly elected president may have been acting as a Russian asset when he fired then-Director James Comey even though the bureau’s own evidence overwhelmingly showed at the time there was no collusion with the Kremlin. Internal memos newly declassified by the White House show the investigation – codenamed "Oxferd Comma" – was launched in the immediate aftermath of Comey’s May 9, 2017, firing and was predicated on an allegation that previously released memos show the bureau’s own agents had mostly dismissed. “The FBI is opening...

I have long wondered if those who lived in pre-Revolutionary America knew somehow that they were living in capital-R Revolutionary times. What were they feeling in 1765, 1770, 1775? Did they know somehow, on some level, that a can’t-turn-back tipping point was near? The troubles were certainly ongoing. It’s not like they just woke up one day and wrote the Declaration to piss off King George. It had been building for quite a while, in very real and very lethal ways. Are we in those times right now? And would we even know it if we were? Heaven knows our...

State Rep. Francesca Hong’s (D) steady rise in the Wisconsin gubernatorial race is teeing up the biggest test yet for democratic socialists and the far left this election cycle. Hong has held a strong lead in the Democratic field ahead of Tuesday’s primary, while establishment Democrats, including Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers, have rallied around Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley. Evers and others have suggested Hong is unlikely to beat the GOP’s presumptive nominee, Rep. Tom Tiffany, in November and that she could even have a negative effect on Democrats running in competitive downballot races. But Hong argues that voters are...

Winona police are investigating after all eight of the city’s Flock cameras were cut down and stolen. It’s the latest city in the state to experience Flock camera theft or vandalism; cameras have been reported stolen or damaged in Duluth, Plymouth, Faribault, Edina and Anoka County. Winona police say officers initiated an investigation on Saturday night when law enforcement realized there had been no recent camera activity. Officers searched the locations of the Flock cameras and found the camera poles cut down near the base and discarded in the weeds, according to Winona police. The cameras were removed.

History shows that mere dissatisfaction with the government is not enough—and that we can prevent a government collapse through our own constitutional and ethical conduct. (Note: This essay is not a call for armed resistance. Instead, it examines historical situations that justify such resistance, as well as the non-violent values and actions conservatives can immediately use to prevent the need for armed resistance from arising.) Throughout history, free societies have wrestled with an uncomfortable question: Is there ever a time when citizens have a moral duty to resist their own government? The question matters because America is not immune from...

Dearborn mosque leader threatens to resign. Niraj Warikoo. Updated Jan. 25, 2015. The religious leader of the Islamic Center of America — a landmark religious institution in metro Detroit that's one of Michigan's biggest mosques — said Friday he would resign unless the board of trustees dissolves. The dramatic announcement by Imam Hassan Qazwini to his packed congregation was met by cries of support from members pleading for him to stay and reflects an intense debate in one of the most notable mosques in the United States over finances and what is permissible under Islam. Imam Hassan Qazwini's opponents have...

As part of its Russia collusion hoax lawfare attacks on President Donald Trump, the FBI opened a “subcomponent investigation” of Crossfire Hurricane, treating Trump as a criminal subject based on already-debunked information linking him to Russia, according to a Trump administration official. The sub-investigation, known as “Oxferd Comma” was predicated on the idea that Trump, “the newly elected president, was acting as a Russian asset when he fired James Comey on May 9, 2017,” the administration official said. The case was marked as a “‘sensitive investigative matter,’ which was generally to keep it off the books from other agents to...

A statue of Yonatan Netanyahu, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s older brother, has been unveiled at the old Entebbe Airport terminal where he was killed leading an elite IDF force in the rescue of hostages in 1976. “It is a great honor and privilege to join you at this historic site as we unveil this monument to Lieutenant Colonel Yonatan ‘Yoni’ Netanyahu, the courageous commander of the Israeli rescue force whose leadership and ultimate sacrifice during the Entebbe raid of July 4, 1976, has become an enduring symbol of courage, duty and selfless service,” said Uganda’s military chief Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba...

The House Foreign Affairs subcommittee chair invoked nearly $200 billion in U.S. support as attacks around Kazakhstan’s principal oil-export route forced production cuts and sharpened questions about Europe’s response. Representative Bill Huizenga has warned that further strikes affecting the Caspian Pipeline Consortium terminal will not be tolerated, explicitly linking Ukraine’s obligation to protect legitimate allied energy exports with the scale of American support for Kyiv. Huizenga, a Michigan Republican who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on South and Central Asia, was asked by The Times of Central Asia what immediate diplomatic steps the administration should take to safeguard Kazakhstan’s...

The Democratic Socialists of America just won their biggest prize yet, and the man who delivered it insists he has nothing to do with them. Abdul El-Sayed has won the Democratic nomination for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat, prevailing over establishment favorite Haley Stevens in the most expensive Democratic Senate primary in American history. Within hours, the entire socialist apparatus of the American left was celebrating. Bernie Sanders’ machine, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s ad money, every single member of the Squad, and the ground troops of the DSA itself all poured themselves into this race. They know exactly what they won on...

If the Trojan War were being fought today, the Greeks would not need to hide inside of a big, wooden horse and hope to be dragged inside Troy’s city gates. They’d simply disseminate all kinds of lies on social media and wait for the Trojan people to fight each other. Such is the power of corrosive ideas: They can destroy a civilization before its defenders understand that they are under attack. Information warfare is the name of the game today. It exists all around us. Soundbites attack us from every phone, computer, tablet, and television screen. Succinct messages ripple through...

Missouri voters rejected a ballot measure in Tuesday’s primary election that would’ve abolished state income taxes. While nine states have phased out individual income taxes, Missouri voters apparently feared an increase in other forms of taxation to make up for the revenue loss. The measure, Amendment No. 5, was rejected by an 84%-16% vote, with about a fifth of the ballots tallied. Missouri GOP Gov. Mike Kehoe backed eliminating the income tax. Opponents of the change claimed that the state’s highest earners would’ve benefitted the most, while public areas like schools, prisons and social services would’ve been directly impacted. Concerns...

Canada has given Moderna the green light to launch a clinical trial for a vaccine targeting the Bundibugyo form of the Ebola virus — which continues to surge throughout the Democratic Republic of the Congo — as experts caution that the outbreak continues to outpace efforts to contain it. Federal officials announced the recent authorization of Moderna’s mRNA shot on Tuesday, making Canada just the second country to launch a Phase 1 clinical trial for a Bundibugyo vaccine candidate after the U.K. This form of the virus was long considered rare and has no approved vaccines or treatments, thwarting efforts...

Here is a fundamental proposition to which I subscribe: The only thing worth being in life is an adult. By the word “adult” I have something specific in mind. An adult is someone who, at a minimum, either alone or in a family structure, provides for himself or herself. That’s the minimum. Even more worthwhile is being an adult who also, through effort and within a family structure, creates and provides for a family. Still more worthwhile is being an adult who, after fully providing for a family, also assists others who may need help, beginning with extended family, and...
  • Why Philly’s public housing costs an average of $315,000 per unit

In Philadelphia, the country’s second-poorest big city, the demand for deeply affordable rental housing is a constant. To better meet that need, the Philadelphia Housing Authority launched an ambitious — and costly — plan to remake and expand its vast real estate portfolio. Over eight years, the agency estimates it will spend $6.3 billion to preserve, redevelop, build or acquire roughly 20,000 subsidized units. That translates to an average unit cost of about $315,000 — more than the market value of many Philadelphia homes.

I'm not what you'd call a keen observer of the political climate in our country, but I do pay attention, broadly, to what's going on within our two parties. Watching the latest from Bill Maher, I was reminded of how we struggle to reconcile our support for an idea we might like, if it’s promoted by a politician we hate. And vice versa. Here though, we have an opportunity - Democrats, in particular - to speak out loudly and clearly against an ideology that has been proven, demonstrably, to be a really bad idea. It’s alarming to see how quickly...
