Keeping it simple for the developers can lead to very complex headaches laterPWNED Welcome back to PWNED, the column where we celebrate the people who’ve taught us how not to secure a server. If you’ve ever tied your own shoelaces together, then tripped over them, or attempted to dive into a swimming pool but hit your head on the diving board, we’ll be talking about your cyber equivalent. This week’s connected kerfuffle comes courtesy of Gregory Shein, founder and CEO of software development firm Nomadic Soft. One of his clients made the fateful decision to prioritize convenience over security,...

If you go to NASCAR to watch the cars crash, the Democratic gubernatorial race in California has been a thrilling pile-up. From Katie Porter spewing profanities at employees, to Eric Swalwell fleeing the race on the heels of prosecutors, it has been something to behold. However, some elements of the campaign have been more predictable, including the use of racial politics. The first major debate was canceled after Former Biden Health and Human Services Secretary and California Attorney General Xavier Becerra declared that his exclusion (due to low polling numbers) was racist.

You might expect the left leaning New Yorker magazine to be at least somewhat sympathetic to the plight of Venezuelan President (via fraud) Nicolas Maduro, currently residing in Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center while awaiting his court trial for drug trafficking, narco-terrorism, and weapons offences. But Diego Lasarte's Tuesday story seems less about sympathy and more about generating laughter whether intentional or not as you can see in "What Nicolás Maduro’s Life Is Like in a Notorious Brooklyn Jail. The jail is "notorious," and Maduro is not? The possibility of laughter immediately emerges when Lasarte reveals that Maduro's temporary roommate was a...

The history of recorded jazz is hard to pin down. So many conflicting stories make up a rich patchwork that guides us towards the truth of how jazz began. So much of our history is about establishing records: we are fascinated by who was first to do a particular thing. Yet all too often the history that’s passed down is actually less accurate than we would like it to be. As the popular truism goes, “History is written by the victors,” and the history of recorded jazz is no different. Most of those who have written about it will tell you...

Quitting coffee for just two weeks may make people less impulsive and less stressed, and switching to decaf could improve sleep and memory, a study suggests. Scientists tracked 62 healthy adults to examine how coffee affects the body and brain. The group included 31 regular coffee drinkers and 31 people who did not drink coffee. They found regular coffee drinkers experienced more impulsive behaviour and emotional reactivity than people who did not drink coffee. The trial was relatively small, involving only 62 people.

“When people show you who they are, believe them the first time.” — Maya Angelou If there is one thing that leftists are adept at doing, it is projecting who they are upon others, namely, their political opposition. How often have we had to endure the incessant droning of these maniacal totalitarians castigating everyone else as fascists, authoritarians and threats to democracy? It only takes one reading of Karl Marx’s Communist Manifesto to show you who these leftists are, along with a study of their history, in order for anyone to believe who they are. But, just in case there...

Senate Republicans have sidelined the SAVE America Act, arguing that it shouldn’t be anywhere near the top of the party’s priority list, especially amid the Iran war and growing economic woes. Republican leaders this week were forced to remove the proposal as pending business in the chamber as they shifted gears to pass the budget resolution. That effectively benched the bill — which has been championed by President Donald Trump and considered a top agenda item — after an extensive pressure campaign by conservative members and influencers. The necessary move, however, was greeted with a sigh of relief by a...

Grindr’s in bed with strange fellows. The LGBTQ+ dating app has expanded its political presence in both Washington and California as it seeks to flex its influence muscles on a range of policy priorities. The app’s ambitions have grown since President Donald Trump’s return to office — and much of that is due to the registered Republican running the shop. Since April 2025, Joe Hack has navigated a GOP-controlled Washington as he pushes forward Grindr’s biggest legislative priorities. Out in California, George Arison, Grindr’s self-described “conservative” CEO, has waded into primary politics, pushing moderate San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan as...

A chunk of ice suspended above the Khumbu Icefall near Base Camp on Mount Everest means it's not safe either for climbers or the specialist "icefall doctors" who typically clear away smaller obstructions. In all, 410 climbers had been approved to scale the world's highest peak, as the typical spring window opensA dangerous chunk of glacial ice, or serac, not far above Mount Everest's Base Camp is blocking the climbing route to the summit and shortening the already-brief window for climbers in the busiest spring season. Nepal's government has issued 410 permits for tourist climbers his season, with mountaineering a...

The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) has strongly condemned U.S. President Donald Trump for once again failing to formally recognize the Armenian Genocide in the White House’s annual April 24 statement, marking the 111th anniversary of the crime. The organization stated that the administration’s position reflects ongoing deference to Turkish pressure, despite longstanding recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the U.S. Congress, all 50 states, and previous administrations. It further stated that current U.S. policy is enabling broader regional dynamics that continue to endanger Armenians... ANCA also pointed to a February 2026 incident involving U.S. Vice President JD Vance,...

In today’s politics, you don’t need a solution — you just need someone to blame. And more often than not, that someone is “the rich.” Say “Billionaires shouldn’t exist” and the crowd cheers. Say “They’re not paying their fair share” and the clip spreads like wildfire. It’s one of the most reliable applause lines in modern political life — and that’s the appeal. Economic inequality is real. But listen to how it’s discussed, and something else becomes clear: This isn’t really about solving anything. It’s about blame. From Sen. Bernie Sanders’ calls to “tax the billionaires” to Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s...

Today, the Department of Justice acted to restore its solemn duty to seek, obtain, and implement lawful capital sentences—clearing the way for the Department to carry out executions once death-sentenced inmates have exhausted their appeals. Among the actions taken are readopting the lethal injection protocol utilized during the first Trump Administration, expanding the protocol to include additional manners of execution such as the firing squad, and streamlining internal processes to expedite death penalty cases. These steps are critical to deterring the most barbaric crimes, delivering justice for victims, and providing long-overdue closure to surviving loved ones. “The prior administration failed...

Explanation: Sunlit arms of a crescent moon seem to embrace the faint lunar night side in this dramatic celestial view from planet Earth. The single telephoto exposure tracking the sky was captured on the night of April 19, when a two day old Moon was near perigee in its elliptical orbit. On that date, the young Moon was also close on the sky to the lovely Pleiades Star Cluster. With the moonlight dimmed by clouds the Pleiades sister stars gather below the Moon's bright crescent, seen through a faint but colorful lunar corona. The lunar night side is illuminated by...

Ten days ago, Congressmember Eric Swalwell was getting very close to becoming the Democratic candidate for governor of California. But then he imploded amidst sensational accusations of sexual harassment and assault. Within hours of the revelations, Swalwell abandoned his campaign and then resigned from Congress and is now under criminal investigation. Why Swalwell was leading the field of Democratic hopefuls was never clear. His only claim to political fame was being one of President Donald Trump’s most persistent critics — which, of course, has little to do with governing the nation’s most populous state. It seemed he was seen as...

A few years ago, I was eating breakfast in a DC hotel listening to two men talk about their schedule for the day. Their business was decorating homes for Christmas, and they were discussing their heavy workload. As I listened quietly the men were describing premium rates for DC families who wanted their decorating services completed fastest. The average rate was $15,000 per residence for 30-day interior holiday decorating, and the rates went up from there. They were overwhelmed with business calls. I sat there stunned doing spit-takes with my coffee while thinking, “holy cow, who has that kind of...

James Giovansanti lives and works on Staten Island. Since 2022, traffic cameras have caught his pickup truck blasting through school zones or running red lights more than 547 times in that one borough. He received 187 camera-issued tickets in 2025 alone — an average of one every other day. That record makes Giovansanti the second-most-reckless driver in the city. Because he pilots a 4,800-pound RAM 1500 truck at more than 41 mph across the island, he poses a unique danger to himself and his neighbors. Ticket data show a pattern of dangerous driving in a wide arc from Pleasant Plains...
