Special Dispatch to the New-York Times. WASHINGTON, Friday, May 19. As the trial of the assassins progresses, the interest of the public in the proceedings increases, if possible. The court-room and adjoining apartments were densely crowded this afternoon. Not a foot of standing-room was unoccupied. A larger number of ladies were in attendance than on any previous occasion. PAYNE's case was nearly or quite disposed of, and the testimony against him presented in more regular judicial form than has been practiced in offering the evidence as to the other prisoners. Excepting the immaterial and irrelevant questions put and answers drawn...

Trump’s quite right when he says it is not me they are after, it’s you—I’m just in the way. The updated version of this is it is not Trump they fear, it’s you—he just has the nukes. Since the election, I have been trying to reconcile why his victory with no coattails feels like a landslide. Compared to 8 years ago, his majorities in the House and Senate are smaller. Nevertheless, the media, the Democrats and the RINOs are broken now. There are many reasons that built up to this. The first being: 1. They stole the election and wrote...

US District Court Judge Edward Chen, an Obama appointee, said to hell with the Supreme Court and still ordered the Trump DOJ to turn over documents related to its decision to revoke protected status for hundreds of thousands of Venezuelan migrants. Judge Chen said the Supreme Court’s ruling today is not a factor and insisted on a deadline tonight for the Trump DOJ to turn over the documents. The US Supreme Court on Monday lifted a lower court’s block on President Trump’s order to revoke ‘protected status’ for hundreds of thousands of migrants living in the US. The high court...

Moody’s Investor Service downgraded the United States’ credit rating from a top-tier rating of AAA to AA1 due to rising government debt. Fitch Ratings lowered the US debt in August 2023 for the same reason in August 2023, and while Moody’s did not officially act at the time the agency warned that the US was at risk of a downgrade. The United States has enjoyed AAA status since 1917—this downgrade is a dire warning. At the current trajectory, the $36 trillion+ deficit is expected to advance from 5.4% of GDP in 2024 to around 9% by 2035. Moody’s believes the...

A UK citizen who ripped off American taxpayers through a U.S.-funded foreign aid program has been sentenced to time served after a brazen kickback scheme drained nearly $100,000 in USAID funds — and he’ll now be handed over to immigration authorities. Stephen Paul Edmund Sutton, 53, of the United Kingdom, pleaded guilty in Washington, D.C. federal court Monday to conspiring to commit theft concerning a program receiving federal funds, a felony offense. Sutton was a Logistics Operations Manager for a contractor implementing the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Power Distribution Program (PDP) in Pakistan — a five-year effort that...

All major mobile networks went down in Spain on Tuesday, just four weeks after the country was hit by a national power outage. Movistar, Orange, Vodafone, Digimobil and O2 were all reported to have been affected by outages hitting professional services, including health centres. Complaints soared as landline, internet and emergency contact services were knocked offline early this morning. Madrid, Andalucía, Galicia, the Basque Country, Aragon, Navarra, Extremadura and the Valencian Community were all reportedly affected. Networks contracted with Telefónica appeared to have been hit, but outages did not appear to be affecting individuals' network access. The company told MailOnline...

The stone over the mouth of the well was large. 3 When all the flocks were gathered there, the shepherds would roll the stone away from the well’s mouth and water the sheep. Then they would return the stone to...

A senior Department of Justice official has suggested former first lady Jill Biden should face criminal charges for “elder abuse” for not revealing what she knew about her husband’s health problems. Leo Terrell, a senior counselor to the assistant attorney general for civil rights, made the call soon after news broke that former President Joe Biden had been diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer, which many suggested may have been hidden, like his cognitive decline. Terrell responded to an X post that said Jill Biden “knew about President Biden’s health problems” but “still wanted him to run for President.”

The Spanish government has called for the removal of the listings of nearly 66,000 properties on rental platform Airbnb on the grounds that they breach regulations for tourist accommodation. The clampdown comes as protests against over-tourism have begun ahead of the summer season. Demonstrations in the Canary Islands on Sunday attracted thousands of people. The minister for social rights, consumer affairs and the 2030 Agenda, Pablo Bustinduy, said the rental properties in question had "violated various norms regarding housing for tourist use". The announcement followed a Madrid court ruling that Airbnb must immediately withdraw from the market 5,800 of the...

Sesame Street and Netflix have struck a deal that will see the popular TV show appear on the streaming platform, after US President Donald Trump pulled funding for the free-to-air channel Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). Netflix said the iconic programme is a "beloved cornerstone of children's media, enchanting young minds and nurturing a love of learning". Netflix will offer its 300 million subscribers a new season of the show and 90 hours of previous episodes, and it will still also be available on PBS. Sesame Street was also facing an uncertain future after entertainment giant Warner Bros Discovery, which owns...

Natural hydrogen trapped in the Earth’s crust could power humanity for millennia, and without emissions. A new strategy maps out how to find it. * Scientists from the University of Oxford, Durham University, and the University of Toronto have identified the key geological ingredients needed to find natural clean hydrogen beneath the Earth’s surface. * This natural hydrogen is produced by the Earth over millions of years and can accumulate underground in the right rock formations. * The study shows that the conditions for trapping hydrogen exist in many parts of the world, making this a truly global opportunity. *...

The dangers of printing money are well-documented. Too much money chasing too few goods leads to higher prices and lower growth. Hundreds of billions of pounds of so-called quantitative easing (QE) during the financial crisis skewed this perception as the Bank of England repeatedly fired up the printing presses to try to revive the UK’s ailing economy. Inflation at first failed to rear its ugly head, until it did. And policymakers and taxpayers are now counting the cost of Britain’s £895bn monetary experiment. QE is a process where Threadneedle Street creates money that is used to buy government bonds, known...

A country cannot defend democracy by destroying it. Nor can it combat interference by becoming the chief saboteur. These are not paradoxes. They are the political reality of post-election Romania in 2025, where the will of the people has been trampled by a union of technocrats, foreign intelligence pressure, and judicial fiat. This is not democracy. It is an imitation of democracy, engineered for optics and controlled outcomes. Let us consider the facts with care. On November 24, 2024, Romanian voters chose Călin Georgescu, an independent conservative and nationalist, as the leading candidate for the presidency. He won the first...

On Monday’s broadcast of Comedy Central’s “Daily Show,” host Jon Stewart stated that the attempt to hide then-President Joe Biden’s mental decline “was a terrible coverup, because we all f*cking knew. All of us knew. There was no coverup. Poll after poll showed vast majorities of the public thought Biden was too old and too out of it to run again.” While discussing the book “Original Sin” by CNN host Jake Tapper and Axios National Political Correspondent and CNN Contributor Alex Thompson on Biden’s mental fitness and the promotion for the book in light of Biden’s cancer diagnosis, Stewart mocked...

After firing back at Bruce Springsteen for criticizing him during a concert tour, President Trump is now calling for “major investigations” into Springsteen and other celebrities for their support of his opponent, Kamala Harris, in the 2024 election. Giving the all-caps key his usual workout, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform on Monday, May 19: “HOW MUCH DID KAMALA HARRIS PAY BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN FOR HIS POOR PERFORMANCE DURING HER CAMPAIGN FOR...

The obvious answer to the question of why the United States runs a trade deficit is that its export sales have not kept up with its demand for imports. A less obvious answer is that the imbalance reflects a macroeconomic phenomenon. Using national accounting, one can show deficits are also due to a persistent shortfall in domestic saving that requires funds from abroad to finance domestic investment spending. Reducing the trade imbalance therefore requires both more exports relative to imports and a narrowing of the gap between saving and investment spending. Grounded by Accounting To give some intuition for why...
