A climate activist affixed an adhesive poster to a Monet painting at the Musée d’Orsay Saturday. The woman, who said she intended to raise awareness for climate change, was arrested. The group has been targeting museums across Europe for years, including most recently a protest at the Louvre last month. A video on X showed the activist sticking an adhesive barren red landscape on top of Claude Monet’s 1873 painting...

Discover the unbelievable bravery of Franz Hasel, a German soldier who risked his life to defy the Nazis during WWII. On a mild Saturday in 1939, a letter arrived at a German farmhouse that changed the family’s world. It was a summons from the draft board for the 40-year-old Franz Hasel to attend the recruitment office in Frankfurt the following Monday. Because he was a pacifist, Hasel was assigned as a private to the Pioneer Company 699, which built roads, bridges and fortifications at the front lines. But Hasel’s story is truly unbelievable. The last Democrat who I had to make exceptions for was my dear Mom. She died a few years ago at age 90, and even though she was a life-long Democrat she disliked Biden based on his shady Senate career. So how do you deal with the Democrats in your life? Do you have Democrat friends. Do you just avoid political discussion with them altogether? One of my oldest friends (surprisingly) just flipped! He's now supporting Trump! That's unexpected happy ending. Another long-time friend I had to give the heave-ho to. "This will be my last note to you. (Explanation...

On this date in 1850, five Cayuse were publicly executed in Oregon City for the Whitman Massacre. Beginning in earnest in the 1830s, Anglo settlement in the Oregon Country presented for the native inhabitants of the Pacific Northwest the same Hobson’s choice that had confronted tribes further east long before: resist or accommodate. The New York-born couple Marcus and Narcissa Whitman* were two of the most notable figures among the hundreds, and then thousands, of settlers pouring into the territory every year. In 1836, they founded on the banks of the Walla Walla River a Christian mission to the nomadic...

China delivered a devastating blow to Russia's economic prospects after refusing to commit to a Kremlin deal over future gas exports. The Kremlin saw its gas revenues severely hit by its decision to invade Ukraine, as European countries started to introduce bans on Russian energy exports in the aftermath of the war. As many in the mockingbird media are celebrating the conviction of Donald Trump in the Manhattan trial, CNN's senior legal analyst has tossed cold water on their jubilation with a devastating analysis of how the prosecutors captured their political prey.Honig's analysis appeared on Friday in New York Magazine which was reprinted from the CAFE Brief newsletter. The title alone expresses Honig's highly critical view of the prosecution: "Prosecutors Got Trump — But They Contorted the Law."

Spirit Airlines Inc. is losing its chief financial officer to another troubled company — Hertz Global Holdings Inc. — as the carrier works to restructure a crushing debt load and the car rental company reboots after a failed bet on electric vehicles. Hertz is rebuilding after acquiring a fleet of mostly Tesla EV models that renters didn’t want and that cost more to repair than the company anticipated. Hertz also has been hurt by plummeting values for the EVs it bought after Tesla cut prices, resulting in higher-than-expected first-quarter losses of $392 million.

The Iran-backed Palestinian Hamas terror organization released a video on Friday providing another indication that hostage Noa Argamani, a young Israeli woman abducted by Palestinians during the October 7 massacre, is still alive. The one-minute clip, which appears to contain an audio recording of the 26-year-old Israeli university student taken hostage from a music festival, urges Israelis to protest against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, accusing it of abandoning those kidnapped by Hamas. Hamas released a psychological warfare video with the voice of hostage Noa Argamani. Even while Hamas broadcasts their war crime for the world to see, the International...

Explanation: Magnificent island universe NGC 2403 stands within the boundaries of the long-necked constellation Camelopardalis. Some 10 million light-years distant and about 50,000 light-years across, the spiral galaxy also seems to have more than its fair share of giant star forming HII regions, marked by the telltale reddish glow of atomic hydrogen gas. The giant HII regions are energized by clusters of hot, massive stars that explode as bright supernovae at the end of their short and furious lives. A member of the M81 group of galaxies, NGC 2403 closely resembles a galaxy in our own local galaxy group with...

HEAVEN — Watching as the last vestige of the nation he helped found crumbled, George Washington sighed and remarked that America still had gone on a pretty solid two-hundred-fifty year run. "Not bad, gentlemen," said Washington to a few other Founding Fathers. "It's sad to see it end, but we had a pretty epic couple of centuries there." As the United States breathed its last, Washington opined on what he and the other Fathers could have done differently. "Maybe we should have added a few more instructions, like, ‘No, seriously, you can't infringe on the Bill of Rights, you...

Most of the people around me have, not surprisingly, been feeling a little off since the kangaroo court verdict last Thursday. There's going to be a lot of that for the next few months, years, or, well, ever. On Sunday afternoon, a friend reminded me that it is now the secular holy month of Pride, which I had managed to not think of until that point. Yeah, I hadn't gone anywhere near the news or social media for a couple of days. I immediately thought, "Hey, let's kick off the week with some annual Pride Month lamentation!" Even the slightest...
