The Nazi occupying forces massacred civilians in Crete. Credit: Bundesarchiv, CC BY-SA 3.0 de/Wikipedia Greek scientists have recently identified 18 people who were executed by the Nazis in Crete through DNA analysis. In the Battle of Crete during the World War II occupation of Greece, the German forces faced substantial civilian resistance. The inhabitants of Adele, a prosperous lowland village in the northeastern part of the Rethymnon regional unit, resisted fiercely and had formed an armed resistance group. As a consequence, the German forces surrounded the village on June 2, 1941, and arrested 18 male civilians (including two fathers with...

It took me a while to understand the expression ‘Your name is mud’... It took me a while to understand the expression “Your name is mud.” It’d come up when I was playing sandlot baseball or learning about football. Someone would scream it, and I had no idea why such an expression would be used in a sunny day. So eventually my wonderful 6th-grade teacher (Miss Jones) explained the story of Dr. Mudd and John Wilkes Boothe. She said that it was something like “You are discredited or in disgrace. The very mention of your name produces scorn.” Thank you,...

Aardwolves — the "weird cousin" of the hyena world that has peg teeth and only eats insects — are an evolutionary mystery, stemming from a ghost lineage that scientists haven't been able to figure out. Democratic pollster and former Clinton adviser Mark Penn said Friday during an appearance on Fox News Channel that he believes Judge Juan Merchan will sentence former President Donald Trump to serve some jail time because he's "trying to take him out of the presidential race." "So far, this judge has wanted to take, obviously, wants to take Donald Trump out of the presidency," Penn said during an appearance on "Your World with Neil Cavuto" on Friday. "So, for all this talk that, of course, he's a first time offender and not eligible ... he's convicted of things that could send...

[Catholic Caucus] Catholic doctors, ethicists criticize Pontifical Academy for LifeRepresentatives of the Australian Catholic Medical Association, with the support of several Catholic moral theologians and bioethicists, have criticized a book published by the Pontifical Academy for Life for its lack of understanding of “current science” and specific areas of medicine. The experts argue that the book spreads “misleading and confusing” theological and medical information that contradicts established Church teachings on contraception and assisted reproductive technologies. The book in question, “Etica Teologica Della Vita” (ETV), covers “Theological Ethics of Life: Scripture, Tradition, and Practical Challenges.” The 528-page Italian publication is a synthesis...

In the aftermath of yesterday’s guilty verdict, a number of people have been declaring that they will still vote for a ‘convicted felon' this November. For instance, here’s Libs of TikTok saying that: My name is Chaya Raichik. I live in the USA 🇺🇸 And I WILL be voting for a convicted felon this November. You? pic.twitter.com/dCSCDSczfR — Chaya Raichik (@ChayaRaichik10) May 30, 2024 She ended up reposting a number of people who said the same thing, or something similar. But Dan Bongino beat them all with the cool factor: I’m voting for the outlaw. — Dan Bongino (@dbongino) May...

The ACLU, another polarizing organization, was willing to defend the NRA in court. That should tell you that some things aren't partisan. What do the National Rifle Association (NRA), the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), and nine U.S. Supreme Court justices from five presidential administrations all have in common? That list is likely relatively small. But at least one area of overlap was made evident Thursday when the Court published a unanimous ruling that a New York government official allegedly violated the First Amendment by pressuring insurers and banks to sever business ties with the NRA, which the ACLU is representing....

Whatever Trump did after the 2016 presidential election, it seems safe to say that it did not retroactively promote his victory.Last January, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg summed up his case against Donald Trump this way: "We allege falsification of business records to the end of keeping information away from the electorate. It's an election interference case." That gloss made no sense, because the records at the center of the case—11 invoices, 11 checks, and 12 ledger entries that allegedly were aimed at disguising a hush-money reimbursement as payment for legal services—were produced after the 2016 presidential election. At that...

[Catholic Caucus] The pope, the chatter, the corruptionWe know that Pope Bergoglio is obsessed with the idea of chatter. Every time he meets priests and nuns he brings up this concept. He did it countless times and, punctually, he did it again in the house of the Pious Disciples of the Divine Master nuns, where on Wednesday he met seventy-two priests from the diocese of Rome (more than one hundred and fifty had been invited) ordained in the last ten years . It is not difficult to imagine the multiple problems of these priests in a metropolis like Rome. Yet...

CNN — Donald Trump’s media allies are demanding retribution in the wake of his conviction.Following weeks of attacks targeting the historic hush money case against the former president, prominent right-wing media figures immediately flooded the public discourse Thursday with extreme and disturbing rhetoric after Trump was found guilty on 34 felony counts.(snip)The United States is not a third world country. John Coltrane’s sessions for the Prestige label proved to be supremely fertile and prolific, marking the saxophonist’s creative rebirth. It’s 1958 and John Coltrane is looking to rebuild his career. The reputation of the Philadelphia-raised musician, then 32, had seemed in serious jeopardy a year earlier, after his heroin addiction got him fired from Miles Davis’ group. As a rising star of the tenor saxophone – the man who had lit up a clutch of Davis albums recorded for both Prestige and Columbia during 1955-56 – the high-flying Coltrane seemed an indispensable component of the trumpeter’s band, but the shock of...
